WHEN it comesto style Kia’sdesign chiefPeter Schreyerknows a thing
or two.After all, it was Schreyer
who gave us the super-sleekAudi TT before beingheadhunted by the ambitiousKorean car maker four yearsago.
Since then he has beengently stamping his mark onKia’s rapidly improving rangebut not until now have weseen exactly what Schreyer’sbeen up to.
The latest Sportage is thefirst all-Schreyer Kia and it’s adesign which is asbreathtaking as it isfunctional.
This super-looking SUV isabout to shoot Kia into themajor league. The newSportage is a solid, capable,very comfortable,ultra-modern familyall-rounder with an emphasison quality.
When the Sportage hits themarket in November it will bepriced from just under £17,000
but to whet appetites a limitednumber of special models willbe on sale in the next fewweeks priced from £20,777.
Fully kitted and in somestartling paint jobs such asbright orange, the fewhundred First EditionSportages are set to becomeexclusive items.
They will also serve asrather effective mobilebillboards for Kia’s newstandards.
Realistically, all that ismissing from the SportageFirst Edition is factory-fittedsat nav – something theKoreans appear to consider isnon-essential in these days ofportables.
Heated seats, not just in thefront but in the back as well,dual zone air conditioning,cruise control, Bluetooth andiPod connections and tripcomputer are all standard fit.
So is leather upholsterywith fine stitching and thereare electric windows allround. A neat touch is
extendable sun visors whichare designed to eliminate gapswhen folded out to block glarefrom the side.
The cabin is roomy for fiveand the seats comfortable andsupportive. If there is a weakpoint it’s with the facia whichalthough smartly styled is stillobviously plastic.
The First Edition ispowered by a 2.0-litre dieselengine mated to a six-speedmanual box. Autos areavailable at £22,077 and theonly option on the 850 specialsis metallic paint at £435.
On the road the Sportage
drives well. Eventually the carwill be built at Kia’s Europeanfactory in Slovenia and finaltuning for the suspension tookplace in the UK.
It’s the nicest ride so farfrom any Kia and despite itssize there is limited roll whencornering. Noise levels aregood as well.
There’s a gear shiftindicator incorporated in theinstrument panel andalthough the shift up pointsseem to come early the engineis torquey enough to make do.That said, Kia is claiming47.1mpg on average but on a
run I managed low 40s.Emissions are 156g/km
which means it costs £155 totax in the first year.
Top speed from the 134bhpengine is a claimed 112mphand 0-60 acceleration is 10.9seconds. So with plenty of pullfrom low revs theperformance is more thanadequate.
It can also tow a two-tonbraked trailer.
The First Edition featuresan automatic all-wheel-drivesystem developed by Magna inAustria, traction control andelectronic devices to assistdescents and climbs in toughconditions.
The new Sportage is aremarkable car for Kia – it hasthe feel, the power and aboveall the looks to make it verydesirable in First Editiontrim.
Come November the fullrange will includefront-wheel-drive only models,1.6 petrol and 1.7-litre dieselengines featuring stop/starttechnology.
Pricing has still to beconfirmed.

winner.That’s a philosophy Nissan has
stuck by for years, and the Japanesecompany has never been afraid tomake the radical decisions either.
Like scrapping the popularPrimera and smaller Almeramodels to make way for a crossovercar in the shape of the oddly-namedQashqai.
In the three years since theQashqai has been built at theNissan factory in Sunderland it hasbecome a massive success – morethan 200,000 rolled off theproduction line last year.
And the reason is simple. It’swhat people want – a smart blend offamily hatchback with the confidentfeel and rugged style of an SUV.
The second generation Qashqai
was launched during the spring andthe good news is that while all itspredecessor’s qualities are retainedand some more sophisticatedfeatures introduced, this car has amore upmarket feel overall.
From the fit and finish of thepanels to the construction of theseats, this is a car that reallywarrants premium status.
True, the tested model was in topspec Tekna trim, but I couldn’t havebeen more impressed with thequality, feel, comfort and soundinsulation.
The Qashqai+2 badge means
there’s seating for seven in a modelthat’s both taller and longer than astandard five-seater.
Life on board is pretty muchfaultless for five, with ample headand legroom all round and plenty ofstowage thanks to the likes of adeep central box, cup holders, coincontainer, racks behind the frontseats, door bins and glovebox.
The rear seats are also versatile –they split, fold and also slideforward or back – while the thirdrow seats lift up or drop down at thelight pull of a tab.
But access to the +2’s pair ofindividual back seats is not onlytricky, they are also only suitablefor kids due to the lack of legroomand raised floor level.
And there’s an impact on otherpassengers as well because ifthere’s a tall driver behind thewheel, who needs the front seat slidfully back, then there’s barelyenough legroom for anyone
occupying the back row – even ifthey are children.
Otherwise this is a top notchvehicle with lots of standard kit, achoice of transmissions, 1.6 or2.0-litre petrol and 1.5 or 2.0-litrediesel engines plus front-wheel orAll-Mode four-wheel drive options.
There’s a safety boost in ESPbeing standard across the range, a
decent size boot provided the thirdrow seats are stowed away, rearprivacy glass and stylish roof railson every model.
It’s also a rewarding car to drivewith responsive handling, plenty ofpunch and decent fuel economy.
Families loved the original – thisnew Qashqai is likely to prove evenmore successful.

Chance for families to join Land Rover’sHelp forHeroes rallyFAMILIES can do their bit to helpBritain’s military forces and enjoythe drive of a lifetime in theprocess.
The chance comes courtesy ofthe Help for Heroes Rally, whichwill be seeking fresh recruits atthis year’s LANDROVERmax! -at Stoneleigh Park,
Warwickshire, from August28-30 - for its next event in 2011.
Earlier this year 45 four-wheeldrive vehicles took part in theinitial 10-day, 2000-mile journey,which mixes travelling withmilitary history, and thosetaking part raised £110,000 forthe Help for Heroes charity.
Next year’s adventure, whichstarts at Salisbury Plain on June18, takes in French, Belgian,Dutch and German militarysites and mixes fast road routeswith off-roading, treasure huntsand challenges that demandmental agility.
Tulip notes, issued twice a day,
guide participants to their nextdestination and the rally isaimed at whole families, not justoff-road enthusiasts or militaryhistorians.
Among the sites visited arethose of the September 1944’sOperation Market Garden andthe Battle of the Bulge, which
began in December 1944.Land Rover Max is open from
9am-5.30pm and day tickets areavailable £10 for adults inadvance. Children go free.
Land Rover is also hoping tooffer passenger rides on the offroad course in exchange fordonations to the charity.
