THE CALLING
APRIL 2018 VOLUME 4, ISSUE 3
Pastor’s Corner
Page 2 THE CALLING
Now, once again, we
move into the spring
months, a season in
which we feel that
winter is now over
(hopefully) and the
green will be back on
the trees and lawns and
our winter weariness
will soon be refreshed.
April also is the month
this year in which we
celebrate the Easter
season. Beginning with
the first of the month
and all the way through,
we hear the miraculous
stories of Christ
resurrected. The
sin-weariness of the
world has been
transformed into new
life in God who makes
all God’s creation new
through God’s Son,
Jesus Christ.
Like Christmas, Easter
is more than a one-day
event. It unfolds
throughout the season,
and its meaning be-
comes deeper if we
allow ourselves to dwell
in it, instead of rushing
off to the next thing.
Sometimes I think we
are driving ourselves to
distraction more often
than not, so it is vitally
important to take some
time in this
resurrection time of
Easter!

Ministries Board As the Ministries
Board discusses
various existing
activities we aim to
see how each
activity might be
expanded in the
areas of learning,
fellowship, worship,
youth, service, and/
or community
involvement. For
example at the next
youth lock-in they’ll
be showing a
movie. This will be
expanded by
opening the movie
to anyone who
would like to come
together in
fellowship and enjoy
it with the youth.
See page 7 for details.
Thank you Mount Hope
for your Lenten
donations to the Food
Pantry.
Thanks to Mike Hein and
Jeff and Kathy Schultz
who took dinner to
Serenity Inn March 18th.
Our Annual Shower of
Blessings ―baby collec-
tion‖ for the Hope Closet
will begin in April and
Outreach Team ———————————————
end on Mother’s Day
May 13th. All items will
be collected in the Fire-
side Room and Katie and
Scott Pavlichek will
coordinate.
We are looking for a
team of people to coordi-
nate lunch at Hephatha
on April 22. If interested
please contact Kathy at
414-698-5031 or email
But in fact God has
placed the parts in the
body, every one of
them, just as he wanted
them to be.
(1 Corinthians 12:18)
While many of us are
ready to dig into the soil
and start planting seeds,
I think we are resisting
the urge to bury our gifts
and have instead, been
multiplying them. We
are multiplying our gifts
by attending the
spaghetti dinner and
supporting our youth as
they travel out in mission
to witness and do God’s
work. We are multiplying
our gifts by supporting
the Hope Closet and
Hope Pantry, and by
providing an opportunity
for other organizations
and individuals in our
community to join with
us by donating food and
clothing to help people
in need. We are
multiplying our gifts by
welcoming new members
into our congregation
and challenging them to
go into their community
and multiply their gifts.
How are you multiplying
His gifts?
We pray: Open our eyes
God to see the many
opportunities around us
to multiply Your gifts by
reaching out, witnessing,
and helping people in
need.
Thanks to Debbie
Conklin and Hazel and
Jason Bader for
volunteering to
coordinate Mount
Hope’s other two lunches
at Hephatha for 2018.

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little chil-dren come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. -Mark 10: 13-16 As Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, Mt. Hope will be hosting a Baby Shower to collect basic baby items and reach out to help local mothers and in-fants in need. Did you know that one in three moms struggle to provide clean diapers for her children? That a baby uses 4-6 diapers a day, and about 2,600 dia-pers a year? Or that most food banks do not have enough baby supplies to last one week? These are scary statistics that many single, homeless parents within our community have to face on a daily basis. Shower of Blessings Sunday will be hosted May 13th (Mother’s Day) by Katie and Scott Pavlichek. All donations will be given to the Hope Closet and our Nursery. We are looking for basic baby care items, emphasizing on the emergent need for infant formula, diapers and wipes. Needed items include: Diapers (sizes 3, 4, 5, 6 and Toddler Pull-Ups) Baby Wipes Baby Bath/Shampoo combo Baby Lotion Powder Formula Baby Food Onesies Diaper Cream

Hope Pantry
I contribute regularly to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. In the most recent Soup for Your Soul newsletter, the MRM president shared the following message: "Men, women and children who are homeless often live in a world without hope: They may have no food,no home, no bed and no safety; they may struggle with addiction or mental illness; they start to despair. And that is the greatest struggle of all - the hopelessness that life will never get any better. Among the most powerful words in scripture are these words of Jesus: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives believing in me will never die." (John 11:25-26). In other words Christ's resur-rection offers us hope that death and despair do not have the last word - not only for men, women and children who are homeless, but for ALL of us. It is the cross that re-minds us that the world isn't divided between those who are blessed and those who aren't. Apart from the cross, we are all hopeless, living in darkness and despair.
At Easter, we celebrate because, in the end, there is no "us" and "them." We are all just sinners who need the forgiveness that Jesus offers through His death and resurrection. You, me and every hurting, homeless man, woman and child - we're all in this together, brothers and sisters knit together as the family of God. This is the amazing story of Easter. This is the story we tell 24/7, 365 days a year. And as our partner you tell it too. Although the details of the stories shared in this issue may differ from yours and mine, we all share this - Christ died the we might have life and hope!" His message really resonated with me as it relates to the Hope Pantry. Families struggling with homelessness need hope. It has to start somewhere, and something as simple as providing food to help them get through the month can make a big difference. Please consider donating food or cash to help us sustain and grow this ministry and provide hope to our clients. Our needs change
weekly. Please watch the bulletin and power point announcements for current needs. Thank you. Linda Helminski Hope Pantry Coordinator

Sunday School 3K—5th Grade Hello All! I can’t believe how fast this year seems to be flying by. As we continue to look to the future of Sunday school I am confident the Lord will place the right person into the role of leader and everything will be a seamless transition. In March, we tried some-thing a little different. We kept the K5 – 5th grade children together for two of the lessons and included pre-school in our service project. The cinema lesson had the K5-5th graders watching an animated movie that went through the Easter season starting with the Last Supper, moving into the Crucifixion and then the Resurrection! All the children were well behaved and were able to see how we started with something so sad but
because of it we now have eternal life!
The preschool children joined the entire group for our monthly service project. The
children made Easter cards for the Golden luncheon members, as well as, the homebound parishioners. The cards had a cross taped on the front and the children used wet chalk to color the outside of the card. When the tape was peeled away the cross remained white. All of the children did a tremendous job!
On Sunday, March 18th the 3rd graders received
Youth: Sunday School
their very own Bibles during the 10 a.m. service. This has been a Mount Hope tradition longer than I have been a member and I think it is a wonderful one to have. The 4th graders received Communion for the first time during Holy Week on Maundy Thursday bringing the children closer to our Lord in their spiritual journey.

High School Youth: Brewing the Faith 9th-12th Grade
Hey high-
schoolers! We’re
gathering on the
first and third
Sundays of the
month from 6:30-
8:00 p.m. (or
longer). We are
calling it "Brewing
the Faith", because
it will give us a
chance to talk
about things -
world events,
society, service,
God - while experi-
menting with our
coffee bar!

Intergenera-tional Movie Night
Intergenerational Movie Night on April 20th 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. We are inviting the adults and high school students to join Confirmation movie night to watch ―Risen‖. The movie ―Risen‖ chronicles a Roman Tribune given the task of finding the body of Jesus Christ after the resurrection in order to prevent an uprising in Jerusalem. We will discuss the movie afterwards. There will be pizza and soda provided.
Book Group The April 18 Book Group will be discussing The Three Weissmanns of Westport by Cathleen Schine. The story of 2 adult sisters and their mother has shades of Jane Austen with social satire, wit and charm. Come join us in the Fireside Room at 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 18.
Twenty-one highly
energetic kids came to
Mount Hope for the
lock in on March 16th.
Rumor has it they were
going full speed until
5:30 am and many of
them didn’t sleep. They
enjoyed many fun
activities including
dodge ball, floor hockey,
name games, falling
through the floor game,
ping pong, pool,
scavenger hunt in the
dark, and a giant saran
wrap ball. I want to
thank all those that
chaperoned and all
those that helped
provide the food.
In April we will have
our last 2 classes on
April 8th and April 22nd.
We will also have an
intergenerational movie
night on April 20th. We
are inviting the adults
and high schoolers of
the congregation to join
Youth: Confirmation Class
Please join us for Vacation Bible School July 16-20, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. at Mt. Hope. All children ages 3 through 5th grade are invited! This year’s theme takes children on a white-water rafting adventure to experience the ride of a lifetime with God! Along the river, children discover that life with God is an adventure full of wonder and surprise and that they can always trust God to be with them through anything.
The children of Apostle Presbyterian, First United Methodist and Mount Hope Lutheran will ride the rapids of Amazing Grace! Rolling River Rampage has spirited music, exciting science, creative
crafts, fun recreation and memorable Bible stories to help kids know that God is always with them. More informa-tion to come.
Save the week for an AMAZING ADVENTURE! Colleen Hammerer

Spring Fling for Hope
Closet. This event will
raise money to help us
help families in
transition.
To me, working at Hope
Closet means so much
more than just
distributing clothing. It
touches the hearts of
everyone on the receiving
and giving end. It
represents sharing with
others less fortunate and
for this, we receive as
much as the families do
who get their clothes.
Simply, we have this
connection with our
community and the
church.
It’s a very positive
interaction with clients
and workers. Who would
think that moving and
setting up tables and
racks, dragging clothing
around, and sometimes
rocking babies for
parents as they go
through clothes would be
fun? Well, we DO go
home tired, and yet
fulfilled from seeing our
actions make a differ-
ence.
Come and help us help
others…shop a little, buy
Spring has sprung! At
least on the calendar…
here’s hoping it’ll
respond soon with the
temperatures.
First of all I want to
thank everyone who
helped to make the
Youth Spaghetti Dinner
and Silent Auction a
success last month…our
turnout was phenome-
nal! Over 200 people
came to support and
celebrate the youth
group plans for this
summer’s mission
adventure. What a
blessing to know that
our church is always here
to encourage and help
financially.
There were some
awesome baskets and
silent auction items such
as family memberships
to Milwaukee attractions,
Bucks game tickets,
Packer football,
massages, toys, essential
oils and wine…
hmmm... no wonder it
turned out to be such a
great event.
Secondly, I’d like to tell
everyone about a new
event scheduled for
Saturday April 21st. The
What’s Up
a raffle and plan on win-
ning it! Treat yourself to
make- up, candles and
other artisan crafted
things.
25 vendors will be set up
to help you peruse and
enjoy. Let’s make Hope
Closet’s new Spring Fling a
huge financial success.
Let’s keep duplicating the
warm, fuzzy feeling you
get when seeing people
choose a t-shirt that is
pretty, find a warm coat
and see a child snuggling a
blanket (or Teddy Bear).
Happy Spring…praise the
Lord.
