In this issue we focus on the theme of “giving at Mount.” We take this opportunity to

recognize and thank all those who have given monetary support to our mission and ministry during the past year. We also want to recognize the “giving” performed by our students, teachers and alumni each and every day — not monetary giving, but giving of self and talent. It is that upon which Mount was founded. It is that which forms the heart of our mission statement, which states in part that “we challenge our students… to become people of faith who use their talents and intellects to serve others.” This is the mission to which so many of you have committed your generous gifts. You give to Mount because you believe in our mission and through your giving and support you, too, play a critical role in our students’ ability to serve others and make this world a better place. These are difficult economic times for everyone. None of us is immune to the effects of the recession. Your generous support during the past year is made that much more special in light of the economic struggles we all face. Parents struggle to afford tuition; many who had hoped to come to Mount are unable to afford to do so. The demand for financial aid is greater than it’s ever been, while at the same time the world needs young men and women like those who come to Mount and other Catholic schools more than ever. The services they perform in nursing homes, soup kitchens, elementary schools, and so many other institutions in so many communities across the country make a crucial difference in the

lives of so many people, many of whom have been struck down by the very same recession. More importantly, great numbers of these young men and women will go on to lives and careers of service because of the values they have learned and adopted through their time at Mount. In the most recent issue of Momentum, the Official Journal of the National Catholic Educational Association, Shane P. Martin, Dean and Professor at Loyola Marymount University School of Education, writes:

Catholic schools are a national treasure, but one that needs attention. They have inspired many and now need to move forward with innovative practices and partner-ships. The future of Catholic schools is illuminated by looking at the road previously traveled — the way is often long and challenging, but the bedrock is solid. Staying true to the best of our past, and embracing the best of new innovative ideas and partnerships,is the future for Catholic schools of the United States.

—(Sept/Oct 2009 p. 5)

As we celebrate all that is good here at Mount, we do so knowing that our mission has manifested itself in large part because of your charitable and generous support. Though we note all the good that radiates from these hallways, we also wrestle with the very challenges

noted by Mr. Martin. How does Mount remain true to its past while embracing the innovations necessary to make it a viable institution in the 21st Century?

How do we continue to afford to renovate and maintain an 85 year old facility? How do we improve programs and facilities to meet the needs of 21st Century students? The answer is simple. It’s you! ! Today, the world needs graduates of Catholic schools more than ever. And Mount needs you more than ever. It is only with your continuing support that our mission will live and thrive for many years to come. Thank you for being faithful and generous partners in education. Excelsior!

Dear Friends of Mount,

I f your lives are anything like mine you have spent a good deal of time waiting. Whether

waiting in the doctor’s office, in the line at the store, for a game to begin, or in traffic on the way to work, we can sometimes grow impatient with the delays we experience. Our lives are occu-pied by so many things which demand our time and attention that when our plans or schedules deviate from what we expect frustration can often follow. In the season of Advent we have the opportunity to examine the con-cept of waiting and our response to it. We may choose to become caught up in the frenzy of life during this time or we may try to develop the virtue of patience a little further. My hope is that the latter may happen for our school community and for you, our alum-ni. This period of waiting is made easier for us by the knowledge of what is coming. For young people the expectation of Christmas builds with excitement each day. As decorations mount around the home, in the stores and neighbor-hoods anticipation abounds. This can also be our attitude as we focus on the meaning of Christmas and give thanks for the great treasure which our world has been given in the Son of God. In the Gospel of Matthew we remember the story when Jesus reminds us to “let the children come to me, do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” As children long for the arrival of Christmas, we long for the coming

of Jesus in our homes, our minds and our hearts. In considering the focus of this publication I am reminded of the many ways by which we give back to our church, the school, the community, and to our fami-lies and friends. Appreciating the many ways by which our lives have been blessed with life, faith, family, friends, work, health, and prosperity, it is right that we give back in some way. Through our talents, treasure and time, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. It may be our presence as a listener, our financial contribution to a cause or our time dedicated to an activity that becomes our contri-bution. As a school community we remind our students of the need to use their talents to serve others. Just as Jesus came to serve, we challenge them to put themselves out for another. The other may be someone they know or it may be a complete stranger. Many of the younger alumni will remember the practice of the Christmas baskets at Mount. Through this small effort, our school provides food and gifts for over 100 families from the Woonsocket area. Our Campus Ministry office organizes and prepares the baskets through the teacher counselors of the school. Each student in the school is asked to provide a part of the food basket and the gifts are pro-vided through our giving tree. This year, as often is the case, the tags were placed on the tree Monday morning. By Tuesday evening all of the tags were gone. In essence, this means that each child from

each of the families will have at least one gift for Christmas. We are like the magi who brought their gifts and placed them beforethe manger to pay homage to the child Jesus. As we bring our gifts to these families, we imitate the gifts brought on that day. Obviously this is just one example of the many opportuni-ties we have to give back in appreciation for all that we have both materially and spiritually. Through the numerous events we sponsor as a school and the many groups seeking assistance in the public our students have ample experience with giving back. The challenge we have is to help them understand the connection between love for the human per-son and charitable contributions. We ask you, our alumni, to con-tinue to give back to the school so that our present and future students may experience improvement and growth of facilities to make their Mount experience even better. Thank you for all that you do on our behalf and as members of the Mount community. Loved be the heart of Jesus.

Students, alumni, faculty mem-bers, and observers of Mount Saint Charles can see that the

school is built upon serving others with individual gifts and talents. In-tegral to this tradition are Campus Ministry and the Service Oppor-tunity Depot. Mr. Richard Jolicoeur ‘74 and Mr. Nathan Domingue, co-directors of Campus Ministry, and Ms. Barbara Ferrer, founder and chair of the “Service Opportunity Depot,” discussed the role of ser-vice to Mounties, and what they are doing to maintain and improve the role of service throughout the Mount community.

Ms. Ferrer, what would you say is “SOD’s” greatest contribution to the wider community? “We help a lot of people! We help Autumnfest, the elderly, young children. We help in places like Providence, Central Falls, and Woonsocket. We’re right now trying to get students to get boxes of school supplies to orphans from Eastern Europe.”

What activities at “SOD” are espe-cially popular among students? “Soup kitchens, the fashion shows [at the local nursing homes], and bag-a-lunches. Bernon Heights and Monsignor Gadoury elemen-tary schools are always popular. The environmental events are becoming more popular because of the requirements.”

Mr. Jolicoeur, what have you done to increase service in the school this year? “I’m trying to keep my head

above water [my first year back as director]. I have added more re-treats to inspire students to serve and a sleep-out for homelessness. Also, we’re backing Ms. Ferrer’s programs, which are wonderful.”

What are some of Campus Ministry’s most important service projects? “For years now, we’ve been going to Arizona to assist Br. John Hotstream and the St. Ann’s mis-sion. Basically, we’re working with Navajo nation, painting, cleaning, and building. The Christmas basket drive is another. We get around $1000.00 in gift certificates, and just a huge amount of food! This year, we’re delivering them [to needy families in Woonsocket] on December 22nd. Come Lent, the mission drive is always a huge success. Our goal this year is to raise $15,000.00 for the Shitima School in Africa. It’s amazing to see how far we’ve already come. $15,000.00 really goes a long way there.”

Mr. Domingue, what are some of Campus Ministry’s biggest challenges in terms of service? “It’s hard, because there are so many kids. We don’t want their talents to be wasted. Also, the kids all have full time schedules.”

As a relatively new teacher, what has most surprised you about service here at Mount? “I’ve never seen a school that required service every quarter. It amazes me that students really enjoy it and want to go above and beyond. It’s more than a grade to them.”

Why do you all think so many students go beyond the required six hours of service? Ms. Ferrer: “There’s a lot of

self-satisfaction. You feel good making people smile. You remember how happy the elderly

are at the fashion show, or when a child

at Bernon Heights wel-comes you with a hug!”

Mr. Jolicoeur: “We [at Campus Ministry] instill that

giving is a way of life. It’s natural for kids to want to serve. ‘Faith without works is dead.’ We’re look-

ing to start a fire and hopefully our kids go out

and spread it through service.”

Mr. Domingue: “Once stu-dents start they realize

how great it is to help other people. It’s that realization that makes them

go over the six hour requirement. Even in

the junior high you see that.”

Service is more than a grade to Mounties. It is integral to the school identity, and for a majority of students, to their everyday lives. With Campus Ministry being spear-headed by two new co-leaders and the Service Opportunity Depot growing by leaps and bounds, it remains to be seen just how much more service will grow throughout the school.

Commu-nity weekly newspapers like The Breeze are weathering the storm successfully all across the country. We’re not dying, thankfully.” Tom has four children and lives in Cumberland with his wife, Carol. His 3rd daughter, Kristen Ward, MSC ‘09, is a freshman at Marquette University in Milwaukee.

KNIT-A-THONOn November 21, six Mount Alumni participated in the Ending Domestic Violence, One Stitch at a Time Knit-and-Crochet-a-Thon at Providence College. Eve Broffman (’04), Marykate Ragno (’04), Tom Dickinson (’06), Julie Hamel (’06), Jennie Eckilson (’07), and Emily Foster (’09) all gathered together with other Providence College students to knit and crochet needed winter wear for the women and children taking refuge at Sojourner House, a do-mestic violence shelter in Providence. Over 40 items were made at the event, as well as over $300 raised, all to be donated to Sojourner House. The event was planned and coordinated by Jennie Eckilson (’07) for her final project in Women’s Studies. The event was sponsored by Provi-dence College’s Hospital Outreach and Campus Ministry.

This year, Mount Saint Charles Academy is celebrating its 85th Anniversary. We’ve planned a number of events over the course of the year to commemorate this occasion, among which was our Royal Mounties Reunion for members of Mount’s graduating classes from 1925 to 1959. On Sunday, October 23rd, more than 40 members of this group and their guests got together for this important occasion. Because of its success…we’ve decided to hold this event every year.

Pictured at the 2009 ARMY/NAVY football game, are Mount grads who are now attending the Naval Academy. They are L/R: Jameson Clem ‘08, Robert Van Winter ‘08, Ryan Pangborn ‘09 and Josh Pangborn ‘09.

Mount St. Charles Students Support Because He Lives MinistryStudents at Mount St. Charles Academy collected canned and baked goods to support the Because He Lives Ministry in Woonsocket. On Saturday, November 14, the students helped out at Terry’s Tires annual fundraiser at Market Square. They sold baked goods and all proceeds went to the Because He Lives Ministry.

Ed Burke, Principal of Mount St. Charles Academy con-gratulates Steven Cortesa, who has been named a National Merit Semifinalist. Steven is the son of Janine and Frank Cortesa of Uxbridge. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Steven is now eligible to advance to the finalist level and qualify for a Merit Scholarship.

NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALIST

Eagle Project Norbert (Norby) Mongeon, a senior at Mount Saint Charles Academy, has been working on his Eagle Project. With the help of his scout troop and his father, Norbert Mongeon Sr., he has put the final touches to the new garden area he designed with new plantings and some granite stone at the site of the present World War II monument. This area is the triangular parcel of land across from the Arena. He is dedicating his work to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in appreciation for the educational and religious contribution the Brothers have made to the people of the greater Woonsocket community and the world. Norby is the

younger brother of Norbert Mon-geon ‘69 and Lynn Mongeon Demers ‘83. His Eagle Scout Honor induction date has not been determined

at this time.

Mount Granted Re-Accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges At its November meeting, the Commission on Independent Schools, voted to grant Mount St. Charles Academy continued accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. In reaching its decision, the Commission reviewed the self study conducted by the Academy, and the visiting committee report. The school was commended for the successful transition to full lay administration and leadership while preserving the legacy of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. They further stated, “It is clear through the board’s attention to facilities improvement and the school’s commitment to quality and excellence in the student’s experience that Mount Saint Charles is an important and vibrant contribution to college preparatory education in Rhode Island.” In addition to commendations, the visiting committee cited this recommendation: “that the school community increase its efforts to develop an academic vision that promotes a set of values with an overriding emphasis on excellence.” In two years, the school will prepare an interim evaluation report to respond to the status of each individual recommendation made by the visiting committee. The administration will appoint a follow-up committee to assist in the preparation of the interim evaluation report.

On September 21, 2009, Mount St. Charles Academy took part in an international art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace, by “planting”

pinwheels with mes-sages of peace on the school campus. Paula Hogue, Chairper-son of the Fine Art Depart-

ment, explained that students created pinwheels of all shapes and sizes and wrote their thoughts about “war and peace/tolerance/living in harmony on one side. On the other side, they drew and painted to express their feelings. The students assembled the pinwheels and on International Peace Day, they “planted” their pinwheels as a public statement and art.
