Initiated in 2002, the Legends of The Mount began as a way to recognize alumni and friends who have made significant contributions to the school and to society at large, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at Mount Saint Michael Academy. This program does more than honor its recipients; it also illustrates the great value of a Mount education and increases the pride our extended community has for its Marist Catholic tradition.

The Legend of The Mount status is awarded to alumni and friends as deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors and school leadership. It is conferred upon distinguished alumni and friends who have had remarkable success in their professional lives, contributed to the community while reflecting the values of St. Marcellin Champagnat, and who have demonstrated unparalleled loyalty and service to Mount

Saint Michael Academy.

The history of Mount Saint Michael Academy is rooted in a wider story that precedes the school’s founding in September 1926 by 110 years; a story of a saint whose love and care for youth continues to be the hallmark and life-giving spirit of Mount Saint Michael Academy, St. Marcellin Champagnat.

On January 2, 1817, Champagnat, along with two young pa-rishioners, founded a group of Brothers who would labor for the Christian education of youth, especially among the most neglected. To “make Jesus Christ known and loved” became the guiding inspiration of Champagnat’s small congregation.

Continuing St. Marcelling’s tradition of Marist education, The Mount, staffed by fourteen Brothers, opened its doors to sixty-two boarding and day students on September 13, 1926. Along with Br. Mary Florentius, the founding Principal, were Br. Leo Vincent and Br. John Lawrence on faculty, both of whom would serve as Principal and Director of The Mount in ensu-ing years. As today, the school was equipped to teach both grammar and high school students. The original sign located at Murdock and Nereid Avenues announced The Mount as a “boarding and day school in the country.” The main building and the “Powerhouse” (now Champagnat Hall) were com-pleted by June 1929, and dedicated and blessed, along with the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, which remains prominently displayed by the school entrance, by Msgr. Mi-chael Lavalle, Rector of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and delegate of Patrick Cardinal Hayes, on May 8, 1927.

Three years later, what is now St. Paul’s Hall, was completed, making available two dormitories, a gymnasium, and other

recreational facilities. As the number of students increased, plans were made for a new complex, and in September 1951, the Memorial Building was dedicated. It provided for a new and expansive gymnasium, locker rooms, a cafeteria, a library, and twenty additional classrooms. In 1965 when the school dis-continued its residential program, St. Paul’s became the fresh-men building with twelve classrooms and a lecture hall.

Throughout the more than ninety-year history of Mount Saint Michael, more than 20,000 graduates have passed through its halls. The Mount continues to educate young men of diverse backgrounds in the traditions of the Marist Brothers of the Schools and the Roman Catholic Church to become academically prepared through the foundation of a challenging, well-disciplined and safe, college-preparatory curriculum, while developing a moral commitment to the service of others.

Mount Saint Michael Academy was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Edu-cation and was designated one of U.S. News and World Re-port’s Outstanding American High Schools.

The story of The Mount has continued to blossom and ex-tend its reach into the 21st century. Excellence may be found in an expanded Academic Program, which includes a wide range of Advanced Placement courses, specialized instruc-tion in Sports Medicine and Architecture, as well as distance

H I S T O R Y O F T H E M O U N T (virtual) learning programs. The facilities and physical plant have been significantly upgraded with the generous sup-port of alumni and benefactors. Improvements have includ-ed an upgraded technology operating system, allowing for the distribution of one-to-one student Chromebooks, and the conversion of classrooms into high-tech learning envi-ronments. A total facelift of the The Mount Café cafeteria, Chapel, and Rotunda, have been completed, along with the addition of four batting cages to complement our renovated baseball field. More recent updates over the Summer and Fall of 2018 have allowed for the re-dedication of the Br. Al-bert Gustave, FMS Memorial Library into a new, state-of-the-art Academic Resource Center, and an enhanced Fitness Center and Weight Room which will be joined with an effort to overhaul the Locker Rooms and Training Room to create a comprehensive Player Development Center.

These endeavors will have comprised several hallmarks in the launching of an ambitious capital campaign titled Mount Up. The most visible feature of the effort will include the Phyllis & Angelo Mozilo ’56 Sports Complex, along with the Rocco B. Commisso ’67 synthetic turf field and surrounding track and bleachers, due for completion in Spring 2019. The accomplishments of the students continue to meet the highest benchmarks within the educational community. With a one hundred percent graduation rate and nearly all continuing onto college, The Mount maintains its high stan-

dards for academic excellence. The revival of school plays, continued success of the varied athletic programs, and the increased financial support of alumni and friends all bear witness to the rich history of the school and the growing im-pact of the Marist Brothers.

Today, as in early days of The Mount, walking in the steps of St. Marcellin Champagnat continues to inspire a new genera-tion of young men to live “with hearts that know no bounds.”

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of The Mount,

It is with great pleasure that we celebrate the Seventh Legends of The Mount Induc-tion Dinner. This wonderful tradition started in celebration of our 75th Anniversary in 2001. Legends recognizes outstanding and selfless members of The Mount com-munity who have made significant and lasting contributions to the Mount St. Michael Academy community.

In our 92 years, The Mount has educated generations of young people in the Marist tradition providing them with a high quality Catholic education while teaching all Mounties to be “good Christians and good people with hearts that know no bounds.” Over the nine decades we have graduated over 20,000 students. As alumni we came as boys and we left as men. We have gone forward and contributed to society in every walk of life. No doubt we have made numerous contributions, big and small, and in the process made the world a better place. Our work has made The Mount, the Marist Brothers, our families and communities proud.

This evening we proudly recognize and pay tribute to six dedicated and enthusiastic supporters of The Mount. Alumni Charles Casamento ’63, Brian Clark ’76, Angelo Mozilo ’56, Mario Valentini ’69, friend of The Mount Alison Zaino (wife of Legend Buzz Zaino ’61), and Br. John G..Herrmann, FMS, beloved former Mount princi-pal and teacher. These inductees have all earned this honor through their personal achievements and support of The Mount that serves as a model of success for our students. Their example reminds all of us of what can be accomplished when we give of ourselves for the benefit of others. Our sincere thanks to each of our honorees for all that you do for The Mount!

It is the generous support of our alumni, friends, administrators, teachers, coaches and counselors that makes a meaningful and measurable difference in the lives of our students proving them with a true opportunity for intellectual growth and personal enrichment. This selfless support and commitment enables us to continue to provide a high quality Catholic education to students attending The Mount, many of whom come from challenging circumstances. It is through your unwavering commitment that our long legacy of excellence will continue and our future will remain beckon-ingly bright.

Sincerely,

Peter P. Corritori, Jr. ’71

MOUNT SAINT MICHAEL ACADEMY 90th Anniversary

Honoring our Past . . .Ce lebrat ing our Future

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends, 90 years as a vanguard of Catholic education in New York City is a stunning achievement! On September 13, 1926, the first day of school, the Marist brothers welcomed 62 young men to Mount St. Michael Academy. Since that time, The Mount has educated generations of young men in the Marist tradition providing them with a high quality Catholic education while teaching each to be “good Christians and good people with hearts that know no bounds.” Over the past nine decades, we have graduated over 20,000 students. We have gone forward and contributed to society in every walk of life. There is no doubt that we have made numerous contributions, big and small, and in the process made the world a better place. Our work has made The Mount, our families and communities proud. As we celebrate 90 remarkable years, as an alum I can’t help but reflect on my four years at The Mount. I thoroughly enjoyed my high school years and in reflection realize how my life has benefitted in so many positive ways from the Catholic education and values I was blessed to receive from dedicated and caring Marists brothers, lay teachers, coaches and guidance counselors. I remember fondly the friendships I was fortunate to establish, many of which still exist to this day. From football practices, track meets, school dances, mundane days in class, hanging in the quadrangle, struggling through trigonometry and capturing the 1969 Football Championship (which I was a small part of), I am grateful for all of it and hope as fellow alums you share my sentiments. Now, 45 years after graduation, I take the utmost pride in being President and CEO of The Mount. I am truly privileged to serve The Mount Community. With our faculty and staff I am dedicated to ensuring that all future generations of Mounties benefit from a high quality, Mount St. Michael education as we have. The great accomplishments of The Mount and our graduates will continue in to the next decade and many more to follow. Clearly, today’s graduates are entering a world much different from that of the Class of 1930, the first graduating class. As challenging as today’s world is, The Mount will continue to educate and prepare our students to meet these demands and carry with them the values and promise of a Mount St. Michael education. The longevity, legacy and academic prowess of The Mount is in large part a tribute to dedicated teachers, alumni and friends. Thank you for your endless generosity and support. Our 90 years of success is only a very solid beginning and should serve as a constant reminder to us all of what we can accomplish when we give of ourselves for the benefit of others. Our work is important and endless; let’s believe in our future…it is beckoningly bright! May God bless us and our mission today and in the years ahead that we may continue to succeed and grow while promoting Marist heritage and charism. Sincerely, Peter P. Corritori, Jr. '71 President & CEO
