Message from the Superintendent

Dear Friends,

This is a momentous day for the Mount Vernon City School District-

from our dedicated teaching staff, to our capable administrators to the support staff who keep our buildings and classrooms moving, we all play an integral role in educating our children and ensuring they are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century head on.

Today though, we are recognizing some of our most dedicated and talented teachers. The Distinguished

Teacher Awards have been a dream of mine since I first arrived in Mount Vernon. While it is always an honor to be recognized for your hard work, I believe it to be the highest honor to be nominated and recognized by your peers for your work. Our Distinguished Teacher awards sought nominations from all stakeholders in our district, from parents and teachers to administrators and support staff- everyone had an opportunity to nominate those educators they thought exemplified the mantra of a Distinguished Teacher.

While I know it sounds cliché, please know what an honor it is to be nominated. Out of some 800 teachers

and 50 nominees, only 9 winners will be selected and one will be recognized as the Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Today, you stand as models of exemplary educators and innovators.

I am so proud of the work that is taking place in our classrooms and across our district. Our teachers are on

the front lines, day in and day out, working to meet the demands of our ever-changing educational landscape. From state tests, to the APPR, to the continuous evolution of best practices, our teachers have stepped up to the plate, embraced challenges, celebrated success and most importantly, connected with our students every single day.

In just a few short years we have raised standards and as a result our test scores have jumped. We have

increased accountability and saw a rise in the number of applicants wanting to join our ranks. We have provided supports and refocused our mission and our schools are being recognized for the results we are seeing each day. Students are learning and even more significant they are graduating and attending college in record numbers.

So today is your day. Today is a day where we will come together with our friends and family to celebrate

our successes and honor those individuals who have risen above the rest and stand out in our profession as both a leader and an innovator. I applaud your efforts, your talent and your dedication. Moreover, I applaud you constant willingness to go above and beyond for our students. Congratulations,

Sharon Allwood, Grimes Elementary School I was preparing to go to law school when I endured a health scare that shifted me into my purpose of becoming an educator. It was just a scare, but it made me question my life’s mission. So I made a promise to contribute to society in another way, and I began the Teacher Certification Program at Mercy College. Today, I am so pleased to work with the most interesting little people you could ever meet. Although my career began in the Bronx, I have had the privilege of being a teacher in the Mount Vernon City School District since 2002 and have taught several grade levels. Since my first year I have been with my esteemed Grimes School Family. I very much like to travel and explore new places outside of the United States. I hold permanent certifications in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grades 1-6, and also Special Education.

Linda Altieri, Traphagen Elementary School Born in St. Croix Virgin Islands. Daughter of Pedrito Altieri and Irene Lang. Ms. Altieri graduated from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico with a Magna Cum Laude Degree in TESOL and a Master with Distinction from Mercy College, New York. She has dedicated 22 years teaching English as a Second Language to students in grades K-12. Ms. Altieri dedicated 14 years to the Mount Vernon School District as the ESL teacher at Traphagen Elementary School. Also founder, director and the choreographer of “The Dazzlers” now “A’ Legacy” dance group that performs in all school assemblies. Activity’s coordinator, member of the Veterans Day Committee and Spanish teacher in After School Programs are some of her extracurricular duties during her years of service at Traphagen

Sanaa Abdul-Basheer, Columbus Elementary School Sanaa Basheer is a second-grade teacher at Columbus Elementary School. Ms. Basheer was born and raised in Westchester, New York. She is the eldest of 9 siblings, all of whom are college graduates. Ms. Basheer graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Elementary Education and went on to obtain her first Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She obtained her second Master’s from the College of New Rochelle in School Administration. Ms. Basheer brings parents and students together numerous times throughout the school year with her famous “Publishing Writing Parties”. Ms. Basheer was voted “Best Teacher” by the students at Columbus Elementary school in 2017 -2018. Basheer has helped direct and choreograph various productions which highlight students’ talent and promote the arts throughout the school district. She is a certified yoga teacher and volunteers to teach yoga after school to staff, students and parents at Columbus Elementary School

Jonathan Bagwell, AB Davis Middle School I have always worked with students. I started out my career as a youth pastor. I was privileged to serve in that position for over a decade but felt that I wanted to serve students in a different capacity. After earning a Master’s in School Counseling and spending a year at a private high school, I was fortunate enough to be hired in Mount Vernon. My approach to students is treating them with respect, being authentic and trying to model the type behavior I expect from them. To keep myself from burning out, I pray and read the Bible every day as well as being active in my church. A verse that has always helped me is from the book of Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

After thirteen years of teaching, I am inspired by my students and colleagues. They help me to stay fresh and realize the importance of continued learning. Despite the often long days and hours, teaching continues to be a labor of love and passion. I could not see myself doing anything other than being with my students. I was destined to be an educator. I live my life by remaining focused and clear when achieving a goal. Besides teaching, some of my other joys in life include spending time with friends and family, traveling, and cooking.

Pamela Del Balzo, Hamilton Elementary School My name is Pamela Del Balzo. I’m originally from San Jose, Costa Rica and came to the United States when I was eight years old where I attended Hamilton Elementary School. Now that I have returned to Hamilton Elementary as a teacher instead of a student, I feel an overwhelming sense of commitment and gratitude to the school that welcomed me when I first arrived to this country. My goal is to provide students with the tools and supports that they need in order to foster their curiosity, thirst for knowledge and academic proficiency in the English language while utilizing their background knowledge in a way that elevates and values their first culture. I’m a career changer and have worked in the medical and corporate fields prior to discovering my true passion. In my spare time I enjoy making my own soaps and candles!

Esther Ehrman, Pennington School In her former life, Esther Ehrman was a dilettante. She never stayed in one place, never settled on one job. She moved from New York to Chicago to Venice Beach to Honolulu. She worked as a circus clown, soap opera and theater actress, and an architectural draftsman. In 1993 a miraculous little boy came into her life. He was challenged by autism and he changed her life forever. Inspired by the incredible work of his teacher, Barbara Vittoria, Esther went back to school and became a special education teacher. She now dedicates her life to reaching all children, to finding ways to make them more effective learners and as fascinated by education as she is by them.

For me, it's not just a profession, but a vocation,” said Mr. Gordon. “If I have to pick one favorite part, it would be the opportunities I have to facilitate lifelong growth in my students by giving them the tools to not only succeed academically, but to see and embrace their vast potential in all areas of their lives.”

She was finally given an opportunity to be a student teacher at Mount Vernon HS. She knew then that she was born to teach. In 1992 an opening at Franko MS allowed me to pursue my dream of being a science teacher. She met her husband in college and married in 1995. For 12 years, Henry taught mathematics in the Bronx, NY before being hired to teach at A.B. Davis Middle School. This marks Henry’s third year at A.B. Davis, where he is currently an instructional math coach and pursuing a master’s degree in school administration through Bank Street College’s Future School Leader Program. Henry proudly works and resides in Mount Vernon City with his wife (an NYC elementary school educator) and three children with the goal of providing a quality education for all students.

Thalia Langley, Hamilton Elementary School As a Jamaican immigrant, my parents taught me the value of hard work. I’m a proud graduate of Lincoln University, an HBCU, with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. My career began at The Boys and Girls Harbor School in Harlem, while pursuing a Master’s degree at Lehman College. In 2001, I joined P.S. 119 in the Bronx. After six years, my tenure in the Mt. Vernon City School District commenced. For the past two decades, my belief in the effectiveness of a public school education has served as motivation to inspire students’ success despite persistent challenges. As a gap closing teacher, I design innovative, enriching and engaging lessons. Throughout my tenure, I have left an indelible mark on my students and parents. Whether it’s implementing programs, serving as the PTA treasurer, serving as a union representative, mentoring and collaborating with colleagues, or being a master teacher, I embody what it means to be a distinguished teacher.

I also had the honor of being recognized by the district as a Teacher Who Makes a Difference. I have facilitated Parent Universities and conducted workshops for staff on Balanced Literacy. While at Parker, I trained through NYU in Reading Recovery. It was through that training that I began to look at my students through a new lens. Sandra Manzueta, AB Davis Middle School I have been in the mental health field for over 20 years. I sincerely enjoy what I do and each day presents a new opportunity for me to challenge myself to be a better person and mentor to our students. I strongly believe that our jobs as educators is to plant a seed with the confidence that one day that seed would turn into a fruit-laden tree. Even though we may not see the end result of the work we do, we all hope to leave a positive influence in our students’ lives as they continue their ourney into adulthood. Personally, I consider myself to be conscious, caring, fair and a humanitarian. I am optimistic and always try to see the best in every human being. While I genuinely enjoy being an educator, I also enjoy other things such as; good movies, and traveling. I am very proud to be part of the Davis Family.

I get to help students learn the most important skill that sets us apart from other being in this world, namely advanced communication. With clear communication life is better. My goal is to have students communicate effectively to create a bond with loved ones, friends, and of course, to succeed with the curriculum!”

Simone Oliver, Cecil H. Parker Elementary School Simone Oliver hails from Germantown, MD. Her path to becoming an educator was not a direct one. After graduating from Howard University with a BA degree in radio television and film production, an internship at a record company followed. Her time working in the entertainment industry was short lived. She was a substitute teacher for just under two years at MVHS, which led to her decision to become a teacher. Simone taught at PS 209 in the Bronx, and at Nellie Thornton Elementary school before she became an assistant principal at Graham Elementary school. While grateful for the experience, after eight years Simone realized that her true passion is teaching. Fortunately for her, she was able to rejoin the ranks as a teacher at Cecil H. Parker Elementary in 2013. She would like to congratulate all of the other nominees

Genette Pearson, Lincoln Elementary School Although I have gone on true peace missions, the most important one to me is my daily mission to educate my students and see them reach their full potential. Teaching is my passion. Every day I am given the opportunity to help my students realize their own unique strengths and talents and encourage their hopes and dreams. I believe it is vital to provide my students with a nurturing environment where they feel safe and loved. They know when they enter my classroom they are mathematicians, inventors, writers, scientists, authors, explorers, and most of all they are loved. I want my students to know how special they truly are because I see them as my gifts. They have taught me to open my heart even wider. What brings me joy is watching their eyes light up when mastering a task and hearing them say, “Mrs. Pearson, I can do it now!” A keychain I carry sums up my feelings, “Hopefully 100 years from now the world might be a better place because I was important to the life of a child!”

Peggy Williams, Mount Vernon High School Born and raised in Queens, NY I am the proud, youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Fred and Petronella Williams. Their blend of Afro-Latin and African American cultures, makes me genuinely empathic and connected to the rich diversity of the Mount Vernon Community. Initially, I had no plans to become a School Counselor, but it was clear that God had a different plan for my life. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a minor in Speech Communication from Iona College I was headed to law school. As my father’s health failed and resources became scarce, I worked in the Legal Records Department of Cravath, Swaine and Moore, LLP and then as a junior publicist for Ruder Finn’s Planned Television Arts Department. Divine intervention led me to a position in the Student Life Office at the College of New Rochelle - a chance to earn a master’s degree! Initially majoring in Early Childhood Education, I was encouraged to take the School Counseling route instead. In October of this year, this whirlwind story of a young girl from Queens will be 19 years old. I haven’t regretted one day and am thankful for all the hills and valleys that have shaped my professionalism and service to the families of Mount Vernon.

She feels honored to be able to give back to the district in which she was raised. Ms. Williamson has taught in the MVCSD for thirty-two years. She began at Washington Elementary and is now educating students at Grimes. She has served as a MVFT 2nd Vice President of the Union, and as one of two District Mentor Coordinators. Lauren Yancigay-Rosa, Grimes Elementary School A teacher of mine once quoted Socrates, stating “When one teaches, two learn.” To say this resonated with me, doesn’t cover it. Without a shadow of a doubt, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. I wanted to have the ability to shape young minds, grow fond hearts and educate our future. With these aspirations in mind, I graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology, and a Masters in Arts in Elementary Education and hold teaching certifications in Connecticut and New York. From that point, I went on to substitute in a suburb of Long Island, take over a fourth and first grade classroom in Harlem and now inspiring the minds of 3rd graders in Grimes Elementary. On my free time, you can find me chasing medals in marathons across the country. Each day I am driven by the idea, that students and teacher alike will learn something new.
