Vesuvius
Considered overdue for an eruption, so Vesuvius Observatory monitors seismic activity, gas
emissions and other indicators 24 hours a day.
Most famous for the eruption of AD79, which may have killed over 16,000 people in Pompeii,
Herculaneum and other settlements nearby.
Considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to its proximity to the large city of Naples (and other settlements) –
estimated 3 million people at risk should it erupt again.
Plinian: Large volcanic eruption clouds – named after historian Pliny the Younger who witnessed the AD79 eruption and later described it.
