In our context… Our students are solving authentic world issues in mixed groupings…reinforcing their own learning while considering the contributions of others.

Students in grade 3 are making a wonderful impression on their new friends, during visits to a retirement residence...positively impacting the lives of others through the gift of 'time' and friendship.

Positive and inclusive murals are being painted throughout our school by groups of students and staff members…enhancing our school culture by providing warm and inviting spaces.

Classes are participating and competing in fun challenges to raise funds for Ryan’s Well…friendly competition between groups to support our common goals.

Teachers refine their practice while engaging in professional dialogue with their colleagues …pushing the boundaries of their own thinking in the interest of providing the best learning opportunities for their students.

Parents & Guardians, acknowledging that school is all but one facet of their child’s education, are committed to learning with their children outside the walls of Mountsfield PS.

Ideal Way On February 15 we were very fortunate to have Robert Pio-Hajjar, the co-founder of Ideal Way here at Mountsfield. Ideal Way is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to inspiring people to reach their full potential. They believe in making everyone feel IDEAL - Included, Deserving, Equal, Appreciated and Loved. Robert’s work with this organization and his motivational speaking skills have taken him all over North America spreading his message of respect, dignity, advocacy and inclusion for all. He was awarded the Order of Ontario in 2016, the same year he received an Honorary Diploma from Fanshawe College, as well the June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award. We were very fortunate to hear Rober’s “I can, you can” message and all left feeling inspired!

Online Safety At TVDSB Our Digital Citizenship education is designed to help our students to become responsible, literate, safe, ethical and respectful when working online. These themes will be built upon through lessons and activities from Kindergarten to grade 12.

Below is a description of what each grade level learns within the classroom about online safety. There are some great age specific resources for parents in regards to common sense usage on the internet. All of this information is available to view on the TVDSB website: https://www.tvdsb.ca/en/students/online-safety-and-digital-citizenship.aspx

Primary Grades: In the early years (JK/SK) and primary grades (1-3), students are taught to understand the importance of being safe online. Protecting private information, standing up to cyberbullying, showing respect for self and others and learning to balance the time spent online are some of the themes that may be explored. Students will also begin to conduct basic internet searches for information using websites selected by teachers.

Resources for Parents: https://www.tvdsb.ca/en/students/resources/Documents/primary-parent-search-tips-literate.pdf

Junior Grades: In the junior grades (4-6), students learn online safety and search skills necessary to find and evaluate information. Protecting private information, standing up to cyberbullying, showing respect for self and others and social media awareness are some of the themes that may be explored.

Resources for Parents: https://www.tvdsb.ca/en/students/resources/Documents/jr-intermediate-parent-search-tips-literate.pdf

Intermediate Grades: In the intermediate grades (7-8), programming continues to include online safety and appropriate sharing on social media platforms. Students learn how to effectively evaluate the validity of information found online and how to properly cite sources.

Lunchtime Procedures At the beginning of the school year, parents/guardians filled out a Signatures Page letting teachers know their child’s regular plans for lunch. The included options were: Eating lunch at school—all the time Eating lunch at school—some of the time Will never eat lunch at school.

In order to ensure the safety of every student and to account for each student during the lunch break the following expectations for students:

Students who go home every day do not need to sign out at the office.

Students who go home on a sporadic basis must provide a signed and dated note on each occasion (bring it to the office) and must sign out at the office.

100th Day of School On February 11th, the students in Mrs. Noordam’s 1/2 classroom celebrated the 100th day of school. We arrived dressed as we imagined looking at 100 years old and enjoyed changing our hair colour to grey with the help of some baby powder. Then we explored the magnitude of 100 by building, measuring, counting, and creating. Students used a variety of materials including 100 cups, 100 gems, and 100 pipe cleaners to build or create, they counted 100 fruit loops to make necklaces, and they each brought 100 mini-snacks to mix together into 100th Day Trail Mix that was delicious. We then wrote about what we imagined our lives would be like when we are 100 years old and created self-portraits to go with them. It was a very busy and fun day of learning and sharing.

Books for Kira

MOUNTSFIELD MUSTANGS MARCH 2019 PAGE 6

The Kindergarten division is doing a fundraiser to support a Mountsfield family. Kira, a Senior Kindergarten student, was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive form of brain cancer in September. She is currently undergoing a second surgery as the tumor has continued to grow. The Kindergarten students are raising funds to help support the family while they focus on Kira’s care.

We are asking for donations for gently used books from our Mountsfield community. At the end of the month, we will be hosting “Books for Kira.” The proceeds of all books sold will be donated directly to Kira and her family. There will be a pink bin in the Kindergarten hallway labelled “Books for Kira” where gently used books can be dropped off.

If you would like to make a further donation, please speak to a member of the Kindergarten team, or visit Kira’s GoFundMe page at:

Mountsfield Home and School Association News

Greetings Mountsfield Community,

Our February meeting was cancelled due to the weather. Ugh! The freezing rain! But have no fear...our March meeting is near. Please join us on Tuesday, March 19th from 7-8:30PM to discuss the April Cake Raffle and plan for our Mountsfield Mingle in June. Come on out and bring your wonderful ideas.

Our annual Cake raffle will be held on Friday, April 26th. We will be looking for donations of baked goods (cakes, cupcakes, Krispy treats, cake pops, etc.) and spring or superhero themed goodies (skipping ropes, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, etc.). There will be two prizes: best school spirit and best super hero theme. Start planning your masterpieces! Tickets have increased in price from $.25 to $.50 not in the hopes of raising more funds but to decrease our printing costs and amount of recycling at the end. Saving the world one cake raffle at a time!

Two Home and School members joined our wonderful principal, Mr. MacGregor at a TVDSB event with Dr. Debbie Pushor. Dr. Pushor is a Professor in Curriculum Studies at the University of Saskatchewan and a leading expert in parent engagement. It was a really interesting (no...seriously!) presentation and most importantly...terrific snacks.

From a H&SA perspective, a key learning was the difference between Parent Involvement and Parent Engagement. Dr. Pushor noted that when parents are involved in a school (i.e., attending events/activities, volunteering on field trips, contributing to fundraisers, etc.) their children are more successful. But hold on, when parents are engaged (i.e., their knowledge is used, parent activities are focused on teaching and learning, and parents are invited to share in decision making, etc.) their children thrive!

At Mountsfield, we are really good at involving parents. We have amazing numbers of folks who come in to parent/teacher interviews, lots of parents volunteering their time on field trips and in the classroom, lots of faces at H&SA activities. And we have examples of parent engagement. For example, our wonderful teacher librarian Ms. Robertson asked our children what they’d like to do in the Makerspace this year and then reached out to parents/family members in our community to seek out skills they could share to meet the learning needs of our children. Yay! It’s happening. And knowing that Mr. MacGregor is keen on increasing our Parent Engagement, more examples will come.
