It is been hot and dry and within days, our school grounds and surrounding areas are green and/or flooded! It has been a very different start, but this has not stopped the learning at Moura High. As I write this article, we have had the advice on the drinking water from the Banana Shire Council which has certainly made things even more interesting. We would like to say a huge thank you to all families for helping out, following through with the advice, ensuring your child/ ren had water bottles. What made this more incredible is the very generous support from a range of different people and organisations who made sure we were all well watered. The thanks goes to our very own High School Staff who, in such a short amount of time, were able to bring in big water containers, take the time to boil water and have it available to our students. A huge thank you to our P & C for their work in the Tuckshop, supporting our Convenor, (who actually went through floodwaters to get into school to feed our school community!) We would like to say a huge Thank You to Anglo for their support of bringing water containers to the School to help out. This was greatly appreciated! We would also like to thank the Banana Shire who supplied water bottles to both the High School and Primary School. It just shows what a great community Moura is! Over the next few weeks, students will be moving into assessment. This is always a stressful time for any student. With the student s stress, comes the parent s stress. That is, the emotions that comes at you, the I dont get it”, or its too hard”. Parents, please know that students are encouraged to ask questions everyday in every classroom. There is no shame in asking. We all need to at some point. If you do have stressed out kids, please remind them that they are more than welcome to speak with their teachers, their Care teachers, their YLCs, their HoDs, their Principal. We are here to help, we want all of our students to be successful! I would like to ask for your assistance. The help I require is about mobile phones. We do have a policy in place at Moura High. That is, no mobile phones to be used at School. I understand that students will bring their phones to school, in case of emergency, or other situations. Unfortunately, it appears that some students are actually using them during school time. The help I ask is that if your child texts you during school time that you remind them (after school) not to use their phones at school. If you wish, please contact me at School, and I can have that conversation with them. 2020 HIGH SCHOOL MOURA STATE Strive today to build tomorrow PO Box 224, Moura Qld 4718 4997 5888 4997 5800 Email ; [email protected] February TH 13 Leaders Induction F 21 Swimming Carnival W 26 School Photo Day School Uniforms Shirts $37 Shorts $28 At the Tuckshop. Term 1 Week 3

Important Dates What an interesting start to the 2020 school year!

It is been hot and dry and within days, our school grounds and surrounding areas are green and/or flooded! It has been a very different start, but this has not stopped the learning at Moura High. As I write this article, we have had the advice on the drinking water from the Banana Shire Council which has certainly made things even more interesting. We would like to say a huge thank you to all families for helping out, following through with the advice, ensuring your child/ren had water bottles. With the student’s stress, comes the parent’s stress. That is, the emotions that comes at you, the “I don’t get it”, or “its too hard”. Parents, please know that students are encouraged to ask questions everyday in every classroom. All Welcome!

School Resource Scheme

The Student Resource Scheme letter for 2020 was emailed to families. Please sign the agreement form and return to the of-

fice by Friday ASAP This form is a directive from Education QLD which our school needs to

abide by.

We had our Meet and Greet on Tuesday February 11. Thank you to the students and parents who came along to enjoy the cooking skills of our own Grillmaster, Mr Finlay. It was a great opportunity to have a conversation with teachers, finding out what things will be happening in the classrooms and being prepared for the next phases of assessment. Again, a thank you to the P & C who proudly organised and donated for the Meet and Greet to happen.

Thank you to all of the parents I have met over the last few weeks. I have felt very welcomed. If you haven ’t met me or made contact with the school in a while, I invite you to contact me. Please keep in mind, I do have times booked with meetings and may be required to attend an outside meeting, but I do return calls. Perhaps you might want to come in for a chat, please call through and make an appointment. Take care!

QATSIF Scholarship Mrs Michelle Briggs

H.O.D Senior Schooling

Congratulations to our Senior Vice Captain Claire Briggs who has been successful in her application for the QLD Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Foundation (QATSIF) Queensland Certificate of Education Scholarship Program. This scholarship program provides financial support to those indigenous students who meet the application criteria of high attendance, satisfactory academic performance and consistently demonstrating school values. Financial support is provided across each semester for successful Year 10-12 students and assists with the costs associated with curriculum access, for example subject excursions and school fees. Claire joins an elite group of past Moura SHS QATSIF recipients who have forged highly successful futures for themselves. The QATSIF scholarship program is an educational initiative that has been around for a number of years and we encourage all students of Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander heritage to enquire about their eligibility for the scholarship.

Wellbeing Program Miss Lynn Paap H.O.D. Middle Years

The Student Learning and Wellbeing Framework supports schools and communities to identify their strengths, priorities and areas for further action to implement a whole school approach to student learning and wellbeing. This week students will be completing an anonymous “Wellbeing Survey”. The survey results will provide staff a reflection tool to identify next steps for supporting student wellbeing based on what is happening in a school on a day-to-day basis. We encourage students to be honest and up front with their answers and remind them that this data is anonymous. This tailored feedback will provide teachers with insight

to teach the skills of well-being through direct practice and the curriculum, aiming to equip students with skills to build their resilience, optimism, character strengths, formation of positive relationships, and other significant factors that contribute to a flourishing life.

Our school’s positive behaviour recognition system, the SAV-V Award (Staff Acknowledgement of Values and Virtues Award) continues into 2019. The award was a fantastic success in 2018 with staff being provided with this opportunity to recognise students who consistently demonstrate our school’s key values of Respect, Integrity and Responsibility. Each week, our teaching staff nominate one student each for consistent positive behaviour. At the following Monday parade, two students are then randomly drawn from the nominations and receive a $10 tuckshop voucher sponsored by the Moura SHS P&C. Each week, all of the nominations and the two random winners are published in our school newsletter. This week’s two random draw winners were Toby Cirson and Scout Dickson Congratulations to both of these students. Below you will find this week’s list of nominations.

Last week was the start of the Certificate II courses for our current year 10 cohort. This year our students are studying either a Certificate II in Resources Infrastructure and Work Preparation, Individual Support Services or Rural Operations. These courses kicked off with two full days of training Thursday and Friday last week. John, Jason and Chris from SDS Training attended our school and spent the days introducing our students to the certificate requirements. Our Resources and Infrastructure students started off with their white card construction module. Individual Support Services students increased their knowledge about work place health and safety and manual handling while our Rural Operations students completed their chainsaw operation module. Tree - 0, Students - 1. All four students completed the practical component with confidence and reduced the large tree to logs, with large smiles on their faces! Myself, on the other hand looked on nervously - hoping students went home with all their fingers! For the rest of the term students will spend their Monday work skills lessons completing theory modules for their next two units. SDS returns March 30 and 31 for two more days of training.
