    Deliver Us From Evil

    Cast of Characters:

    Edgar Ramirez

    Eric Bana

    Joel McHale

    Olivia Munn

    Sean Harris

    Genre:

    Crime, Horror , Psychological Thriller

    Introduction:

New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a

series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez),

schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their

    city.

    Plot Synopsis:

A cop and a priest team up on a case of demonic possession in this Screen Gems horror film based on actual cases

investigated by retired NYPD police officer-turned-demonologist Ralph Sarchie. When a frightening wave of

violence sweeps through New York City, troubled cop Sarchie (Eric Bana) fails to find a rational explanation for the

bizarre crimes. His eyes are opened to a frightening alternate reality, however, when renegade Jesuit priest

Mendoza (dgar Ramrez) convinces him that demonic possession may be to blame for the gruesome murders.

Together, this unlikely duo wage a valiant supernatural struggle to rid the city of an otherworldly evil. But the

closer they get to the source of this malevolent scourge, the more immediate the danger becomes to Sarchie, his

pregnant wife Jen (Olivia Munn), and their young daughter Christina.

    Theme:

The main theme of the movie in relation to the Mental- Psychological aspect of things is psychiatric mental health

which was evident in Officer Sarchies role/behavior in the movie. He suffers from hallucinations(visual and

auditory) which led to a gruesome murder at one point and just made his condition worse . However, the priest

implies there is more to the incidents in the movie than just a case of mental illness, but a paranormal one which

makes the whole movie more twisted and horrific.

    Application of Concepts:

Hallucinations may occur in any sensory modality (e.g., auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile), but

auditory hallucinations are by far the most common. Auditory hallucinations are usually experienced as voices,

whether familiar or unfamiliar, that are perceived as distinct from the persons own thoughts. Officer Sarchies

condition affected his family, job, relationship and basically everything around him aside from the fact that his job

as an NYPD police officer takes a toll on him physically, emotionally, mentally and even spiritually.

    Conclusion:

I love a good psychological thriller. And when that is blended with a supernatural element which is based on a truestory, then it is a must watch for me! However, I realized(after watching it the second time in 2 weeks) it was just

good for a one-time watch. I do recommend it for horror/thriller movie buffs but I honestly think the movie was

just okay, nothing really special nor worth remembering aside from the fact that it is based on true accounts of an

NYPD officer turned demonologist. So, Id have to give it a 3.5 out of 5 since it was entertaining for the most part,

but not wait it to come out on DVD and get it kinda movie.

    Plot Synopsis:

Pat Peoples, the endearing narrator of this touching and funny debut, is down on his luck. The former high school

history teacher has just been released from a mental institution and placed in the care of his mother. Not one tobe discouraged, Pat believes he has only been on the inside for a few monthsrather than four yearsand plans

on reconciling with his estranged wife. Refusing to accept that their apart time is actually a permanent separation,

Pat spends his days and nights feverishly trying to become the man she had always desired.

    Theme:

The main theme of the movie in relation to the Mental-Psychological aspect of things is psychiatric mental health,

mental health promotion, and mental health teaching and support. It was pretty obvious in the movie that Pat

has Bipolar disorder. Pats father has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and is superstitious as well.

    Application of Concepts:

Pats father with his obsessive-compulsive habits, is no model of excellence for his sons bipolar mood swings but

in the movie, since it was a comedy, they blended well with the other characters most especially Tiffany, the witty

young widow who claims to be just as loony as Pat.

Bipolar Disorder-Bipolar disorder (also known as bipolar affective disorder, manic-depressive disorder, or manic

depression) is a type of mental illness, specifically a mood disorder, characterized by episodes of an elevated or

agitated mood known as mania that often alternates with episodes of depression. These episodes can impair the

individual's ability to function in ordinary life.

Obsessive-Compulsive DisorderObsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by

intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry; by repetitive behaviors aimed atreducing the associated anxiety; or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions. Symptoms of the

disorder include excessive washing or cleaning; repeated checking; extreme hoarding; preoccupation with sexual,

violent or religious thoughts;relationship-related obsessions; aversion to particular numbers; and nervous rituals,

such as opening and closing a door a certain number of times before entering or leaving a room. These symptoms

can be alienating and time-consuming, and often cause severe emotional and financial distress. The acts of those

who have OCD may appear paranoid and potentially psychotic. However, OCD sufferers generally recognize their

obsessions and compulsions as irrational and may become further distressed by this realization.

Delusion of Reference-Delusions of reference refers to the strongly held belief that random events, objects,

behaviors of others, etc. have a particular and unusual significance to oneself.

Delusion of Persecution-Delusions of persecution or paranoiaBelief that others are out to get him or her. These

persecutory delusions often involve bizarre ideas and plots.

Delusions of control- Belief that ones thoughts or actions are being controlled by outside, alien forces. Common

delusions of control include thought broadcasting (My private thoughts are being transmitted to others ), thought

    5/9

insertion (Someone is planting thoughts in my head ), andthought withdrawal (The CIA is robbing me of my

    thoughts).

    Conclusion:

Id like to say this sort of movie isnt my cup of tea per se but who am I to complain to watch it and I did because I

had to. Basically my insights on this movie is that this movie would be fantastic for psychological buffs who are also

into humor which sounds crazy for its combination. It gave me another glimpse of behaviors of mentally

challenged individuals and how they react to certain situations and to things, persons and the environment around

them, which was great reference for awareness. So Id definitely recommend the movie to co-nursing students and

those interested or curious about mental health. Id give it a 4.5 for reference material and educational purposes.

A 2.5(up from a 0.5) for Jennifer Lawrences HOT appearance in the movie.

    Side Effects

    Cast of Characters:

    Jude Law

    Rooney Mara

    Catherine Zeta-Jones

    Channing Tatum

    Genre:

    Psychological Thriller

    Introduction:

"Side Effects is a psychological thriller set in the world of the pharmaceutical industry. A troubled woman (Mara)

who is coping with the imminent release of her husband (Tatum) from jail begins to take a new prescription drug

with unforeseen consequences. Directed by Steven Soderberghscourge.

mentally fragile Emily performs a quasi-suicide attempt and is put in the care of Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), a

    Theme:

The main theme of the movie in relation to the Mental- Psychological aspect of things is side effects of psychiatric

mental drugs which leads to chaos and hostility among the characters in the movie. One moral story in the movieis you cant cheat or beat whats inevitable, in this case drugs that have a corresponding side effect to it.

    Application of Concepts:

Fake side effects that are made by man as shown in the movie, however there is some psychology in it which drove

the characters in the movie wild. Depression, stress, paranoia were seen in the movie since Emily faked her

insaneness which affected all the characters lives.

    Conclusion:

Great film. Keeps you guessing. Slightly disturbing, slightly uneasy, slightly wondering if you really know and

understand the whole story. Highly recommended film about mental pharmacology. So Id like to give it a 4 out of

    5.

    Theme:

The main theme of the movie in relation to the Mental- Psychological aspect of things is psychiatric mental health

which was evident in Ninas role/behavior all throughout the movie. She suffers from schizophrenia.

    Application of Concepts:

Nina is nuts. There, I said it. To be more specific, shes suffering from a mental condition known as schizophrenia.

Without treatment, this disorder can be a real bitch, resulting in hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and

disorganized thinking and speech. The schizophrenia is brought on by the extreme pressure Nina is under, both

from her mother, her dance director, and herself. She desires to be perfect, and this unattainable desire is slowly

eating away at the walls of her psyche. It also doesnt help that shes struggling with confused sexual feelings, from

the advances of her boss to the strong attraction to her chief rival.

Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that affects the way a person acts, thinks, and sees the world. People with

schizophrenia have an altered perception of reality, often a significant lossof contact with reality. They may see or

hear things that dont exist, speak in strange or confusing ways, believe that others are trying to harm them, or feel

like theyre being constantly watched. With such a blurred line between the real and the imaginary, schizophrenia

makes it difficulteven frighteningto negotiate the activities of daily life. In response, people with schizophrenia

may withdraw from the outside world or act out in confusion and fear.

The hallucinations

must occur in the context of a clear sensorium; those that occur while falling asleep (hypnagogic) or waking up

(hypnopompic) are considered to be within the range of normal experience.

    Conclusion:

I was contemplating on watching this movie years ago and thank God for passing up on it because the film was

outrageously boring and too feminine for me but thanks for a wonderful girl on girl scene by Natalie and Mila Kunis

which got me up on my seat from sleeping. But on a character/role performance, Nina, the ballerina Black Swan

was a great example of personal obsessivenes toward perfectionist to the point of falling into the pattern of

hallucination. Now for that reason Id give it a 4out of 5
