Open Badges is a project of Mozilla with support from the MacArthur Foundation
What are badges?
badges = visual representations of a skill or achievement
scouting may be the first example that comes to mind
more and more, we see badges representing achievements on the web
some are just for fun or social status
but increasingly the skills are real, based on real tasks and work
reflecting technical and social abilities -- both of which employers are looking for
and willing to pay for ➔ jobs
What if we used badges for learning?
Open learning: Mozilla & P2PU’s School of Webcraft
After-school programs: iRemix
Museums & Science Centers: American Museum of Natural History
Government agencies: NASA
Community Organizations: 4-H
What if we all used a shared badge ecosystem and infrastructure?

In this badge ecosystem a badge is more than just a badge
Why do we need this?
(or something like it)
more access to information
more opportunities to learn
need a way to recognize learning regardless of where or how it occurs
(including new or informal pathways)
need a way to capture all types of learning
(including new or innovative types)
badges (+ assessments) can offer us a way to get there
