About West Shore• Small, rural public
community college in West Michigan
• About 1200 students a semester
• Serve primarily two counties – about 60,000 residents
• What we call “barely comprehensive” and “equally inconvenient”

Change Management• Purposeful –what you want and why• Contextual – change has to be sited in the
organization you are trying to change – your culture, issues and values• Integrated – has to be part of your other initiatives and
not seen as something separate• Relationship oriented – • “To feel emotionally committed, we need to: learn, grow
and be challenged, feel appreciated, work for a higher purpose, and the first three don’t matter if we don’t trust our leaders.” Kevin Kruse

Data-Driven: The Why• We had been cited in our HLC quality check up for
having data but not using it• We made it a strategic plan as a goal• We were doing a lot of things and needed to know
why, or what or how…• It was admittedly a “top-down” sort of process to
begin.

What did we want to accomplish?• Have evidence of use of
data for decision-making by 2013 for our Systems Portfolio• Prove to the campus that
surveys were taken seriously• Make better decisions
when based on data, at least in part• Be a stronger college
