Wherever. Whenever. However.

Mobility is not a device, it’s an IT architecture constructed by policies, infrastructure and technology solutions. Creating and enabling mobility is far more complicated than just giving employees laptops and skype for business. With the varying worker types, security issues and interconnectivity between existing applications and devices… to name just a few, there’s a whole host of IT challenges to overcome in order to successfully enable mobile working. And once you’ve got the right tools in place, how can you optimise them and foster a truly mobile workforce and culture? Employees need training, not to mention a change in mind-set to fully embrace and reap the rewards of this new working age.

So what exactly is mobility?

Tech Target describe enterprise mobility as “an approach to work in which employees can do their jobs from anywhere using a variety of devices and applications.” Gone are the days of 9am–5pm operation. With the dawn of the internet, the boom of social media and smartphone adoption, customers expect a response within minutes to queries, as opposed to days. This on demand mind-set has also changed the way employees view their work/life balance. Employees want the ability to work:

• When they want, whether it’s first thing in morning or last thing at night – they want access to emails and documents no matter what time of day it is

• Wherever they are e.g. at home, in a café, on site or in the office – people want the flexibility to move location effortlessly

• Unrestricted with the devices and software they’re familiar with – people are more productive when they’re using technology they feel comfortable with

53% of people think they’d be

more productive if they could work

3. What Does the Agile Work Environment Look Like? https://serraview.com/what-does-the-agile-work-environment-look-like/

Less corporate hardware ownershipBy allowing employees to use their own laptops and smartphones, businesses no longer have to support corporate endpoints which traditionally have a short lifecycle, eating into IT budgets.

Happier employees Employees are happier when they have the freedom to work in the way they prefer, resulting in higher output and greater staff retention.

Increased productivity and efficiencySupporting employees with the tools they’re familiar and comfortable with inevitably results in faster work. Further flexibility around when they work also results in people maximising their working time and organisations maximising their workspace.

The benefits of more mobility

With the right mobility tools in place, your organisation will benefit from:

Security and governance With work being conducted everywhere, potentially on non-corporate devices, how can your organisation ensure its data and assets are secure? How can you ensure the confidentiality and integrity of your data is maintained?

Compatibility and collaboration Letting employees use any device is fine, but what if your core apps do not integrate? Will there be implications for how employees keep in contact with their colleagues, customers and partners?

Market saturation Every IT vendor has jumped on the mobility bandwagon, all professing to have the optimal solution. But do they really? And how can you work out which is the best solution for your organisation?

Up to 60% of our traditional office

space is wasted at any given time.3

The challenges with mobility

The main issues faced by organisations when addressing the need for mobility are:

5G – Reaching new limits5G networks will deliver apps and services to smartphones and other mobile devices at much faster data rates than were previously available. Download speeds up to around 1Gbit/s will be possible, though the average will be closer to 100Mbit/s (up to three times faster than what’s available now.)

There’s the obvious benefits of better mobile coverage, availability and reliability, but also more bandwidth to integrate 5G connectivity into a whole range of other devices such as headsets.

IIoT – The 4th Industrial RevolutionIndustrial Internet of Things (IIoT), or ‘Industry 4.0’ is characterised by connectivity. IIoT will bring autonomous vehicles, wireless sensor networks, modular production units among other things into the factory. This will improve and automate processes, while collecting data that can be used to make more optimal decisions in the workplace.

These applications will be powered by the cloud - therefore boosting flexibility and also reducing maintenance costs.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Smart tech that’s growing AI has found its way into smartphones, applications and even the mobile networks themselves. The most obvious manifestation is in smart speakers like the Amazon Alexa and Google Home, but the entire industry is gearing towards a much bigger rollout. In the future, it could control entire systems and even self-optimise mobile networks as they become more virtualised.

Away from mobile, machine learning is already finding its way into business software such as Box and Office 365 as well as most cloud platforms.

Virtual Reality (VR) – A whole new world to exploreVR has become one of tech’s coolest additions in recent years. Video games are an obvious way to lure consumers towards the technology, but there is now a desire to move towards other applications.

Advances in network technology, such as 5G, as well as the rise of cloud and edge computing will help facilitate this movement.

Augmented Reality (AR) - Blurring the lines of real and imaginationAR differs from VR in that it adds digital elements to real life situations. This technology could change a vast array of industries including health, education, marketing and media.

The world of B2B is beginning to explore some exciting concepts around how this technology can enhance the way we collaborate in and out of the office, as well as how the technology can be used on the move. For example in architecture, AR can enable people in meetings (in or out of the office) to see the physical space and make changes on the spot.
