    1 Executive Summary

In 2013, 10 field scale soybean trials (Table 1) were set up. These were to determine what effectthere would be on yield if only liquid inoculant on the seed was used instead of both liquid andgranular inoculant. There were 10 fields that were selected for the soybean on-farm trials acrossEastern Manitoba and they were seeded between May 16th and June 4th. These fields had aprevious history of soybeans of at least 2 years, with the exception of one field that has only hadone year of soybeans.

Seeding rates ranged from approximately 150,000 seeds/acre to 246,000 seeds/acre with rowspacing from 7 to 22 inches. There were three planters and seven air drills used to plant thesoybeans. In the trials, the farmer applied both his normal rates of liquid and granular inoculant(ranged from 5-8 lbs/ac) on 6 field-length strips (With), alternating with 6 strips of only liquidinoculant on the seed (W/O). Please note that the Sperling-W trial had only 6 strips in total.

The following is a summary of the results:

    1. The trial results (Table 1) showed an average 0.5 bus/acre yield advantage for the strips withboth granular and liquid inoculant. Three out of ten trials showed a statistical significance infavor of using both inoculants at a 95% confidence interval.

    2. The cost of granular inoculant is $11.50/acre (average cost of 5 lbs/ac of granular). The yieldadvantage for using both inoculants is not economically significant with soybeans at $12/bus.This would result in a $6/acre loss. The trials show that there would be only an economicreturn of using granular inoculant 3 out of 10 times (30%).

    3. Soybean yields ranged from 24 to 47 bus/acre across the trials. The yield difference betweenthe two treatments ranged from –0.5 to 3.0 bus/acre. Four of the top five yields came fromfields that had soybeans planted on soybeans.

    4. Nodulation counts were done at the V3 and R2 stage. Nodulation was higher in strips with bothinoculants at the Blumenort-R and Sperling-W sites. The fields with soybeans planted onsoybeans had high nodulation in both treatments. Teulon-W had only had one year of soybeanhistory yet showed the highest nodulation and had the highest yield across the trial (Figure 1).

    5. Soil N, P, and K levels had no correlation with yield and nodulation and there were no manuredfields in this trial. Rainfall, soluble salts and carbonates were high on Beausejour-B, whichresulted in iron chlorosis throughout the field.

    6. For this year, there seemed to be no correlation between yield and rainfall, even when lookingat the crucial period of R4 (pod is .75 inches long at one of four uppermost nodes) to R6 (seedfills pod at one of four uppermost nodes).

    7. Diseases were low this year and consisted of fusarium and phytopthora root rot, alternaria andseptoria leaf spot, bacterial blight and downy mildew. Insects consisted of mainly grasshoppersand damage was low to high, with Silver Plains-N and Blumenort-R spraying insecticide.

Probability for break-even economic return is 30% (at a soybean price of $12.00/bushel andgranular inoculant at $11.50/acre (average cost of 5 lbs/ac of granular).

There will be another two years of on-farm research to determine if using granular inoculant onsoybeans provides an economic return.

    2 Background

Soybean acres in Manitoba have increased to about 1.08 million acres of soybeans in 2012 fromless than 800 acres in 1996 (MAFRI). With this increase in acres comes interest in the bestmanagement practices to ensure sustainability of the industry and profitability for farmers. There isa need for an organized on-farm collection of quality data to learn what is profitable and what isn’t.In discussions with farmers, it appears that inoculation is a priority.

There were 10 soybean farmers who set up strip trials across their fields in Eastern Manitoba. These 10 fields were set up to obtain data on inoculation. The 10 fields were seeded between May16th and June 4th. There were usually 12 strips across the field. There were 6 alternating strips withthe farmer’s normal application of liquid and granular inoculant and 6 strips that contained onlyliquid inoculant on the seed. There were 3 planters (2 John Deere and 1 Case) and 7 air drills (Table2). The fields were usually about a ½ mile long and the strips 40 to 80 feet in width depending onwhat was needed to take a ‘pure’ combine swath. This resulted in about 2.4 to 4.8 acres in a stripor from 30 to 50 acres in a trial (See Appendix 1 for Airphoto maps). Information on individualtrials is located in Appendices 2 and 3.

The soybean seeds have been put under a 3-minute soak test to see the percentage of seeds thatcrack. These percentages range from approximately 5-46% (Table 2), with the lower number thebetter result. Anything below 10% is considered acceptable for percent of cracks. Plantpopulations (Table 3) were taken on same 10 foot strips in each strip at first trifoliate and pre-harvest.

    3 Observations

    Yield Difference:

Table 1 and Figure 1 gives a summary of yields on the 10 trials. The average seeding rate acrossthe trial locations was 196,000 (Table 1). Neither total rainfall nor rainfall from July 22 to August31 (R4-R6 stage) appears to correlate with yield (Table 1, Figure 1 and Figure 2). Full pod stage(R4) started July 22 in the trials. Please note the Teulon-W trial only had one year of soybeanhistory but showed no difference in nodulation.

There was a 0.5 bus/acre advantage for using both inoculants across the trial locations. Three outof the ten trials showed a statistical significance in favor of using both inoculants at a 95%confidence interval. The remaining locations are not statistically significant (Appendix 3).

Looking at the results from this year’s data, there was an economical advantage for using bothgranular and liquid inoculants 3 out of 10 times (30%).

The R4 stage (pod is ¾” long at 1 of 4 uppermost nodes on the main stem with a fully developedleaf) was reached about July 22, 2013 and lasted until August 31, 2013 on most of the trials.

    Ground Cover/Yield:

Table 2 shows the soil types ranging from clay to very fine sandy loam. The Ag Capability rangedfrom Class 1 to 5. The varieties ranged from short to long season. The percent ground cover wastaken at row closure between July 9-26. There was a strong relationship between ground cover andyield (Figure 3). The percent crop residue cover on the fields was also done and showed nocorrelation with overall yield. This may be different in cooler/wetter springs where higher residuecover could have an impact on plant emergence and yield (Table 4). There was no relationshipbetween yield and row spacing.

    Soil Fertility & Nodulation/Yields:

Soil tests were done in spring after seeding (Table 3). There was very high soil Olsen P levels atTeulon-W (17 ppm). There were low P levels at Beausejour-H (5 ppm) and Blumenort-R (6 ppm).No sites have a history of manure. Since P levels were below 20 across all trials, it is difficult todetermine whether there would have been any effect on yield. Results from last year’s populationtrials show there is a yield benefit from P values about 20 ppm.

The soil analysis (Table 3) shows soil nitrogen ranging from 20-136 lbs/acre. Even at 136 lbs/acreN, St. Andrews-K still had good nodulation (10-20 nodules/plant) across the trial. All trials hadgood to excellent nodulation between the two treatments. The highest nodulation came from fieldswith soybeans planted on soybean stubble. Only Sperling-W and Blumenort-R showed a differencein nodulation between the two treatments, with a higher yield using both inoculants.

There was an addition of phosphorus fertilizer at one of the sites. At Beausejour-H, 30 poundsactual P was added with the soybeans at planting.

    Combine Losses:

Table 4 shows header types used and soybean losses after combining. Combine losses wereminimal to high and ranged from 0.4 to 2.3 bus/acre. Combine losses are considered minimal ifless than 2% of yield (Generally, less than 1 bus/acre). All combines had flexheads except forTeulon-W. Speeds ranged from 3-5 mph. Combines equipped with air reels showed a 1 busheladvantage.

    Comments on Individual trials:

Influences on yields between strips (See Appendices 2 and 3 to look at individual trial results):

    1. Compaction at seeding due to the ground being wet (varied across all trials)1. Sprayer tracks in one strip but not in other (varied across all trials)2. Excess moisture Beausejour-B3. Hail at Beausejour-B4. Insects/disease – low levels5. Light frost at Hazelridge S

  • MPGA Soybean Inoculation Trials Prepared by Tone Ag Consulting Ltd.November 2013 12

    4 Recommendations

    1. Need two more years of On-Farm inoculation trials to obtain more data to determine if usinggranular inoculant on soybeans provides an economic return.

    5 Conclusions

    1. This study showed there was only a 0.5 bus/acre yield advantage of using both granular andliquid inoculants vs. only liquid inoculant.

    2. There is an economic return of using granular inoculant 3 out of 10 times (30%).3. Nodulation between the two treatments was the same at 8 out of 10 trial locations.4. The top 4 out of 5 yields came from fields seeded soybeans on soybeans and had high

nodulation in both treatments.5. There appeared to be no difference in yield in the different row spacing of 7.5 inch to 20 inch.6. Soybean yields appear to have a relationship with high plant ground cover.
