The Artists’ Invitational JENNIFER BAKER is a design educator and thought leader with a strong background in curriculum development, program innovation, and design facilities optimization. She has many years of experience in the field of project-based learning and design thinking. The focus of her career has been crafting and delivering programs that instill critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving to all constituents of a school. She enjoys interdisciplinary collaboration and spearheading school-wide initiatives to make the design process the vehicle that structures and transforms student inquiries into creative solutions. Jennifer holds a B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and an M.A.T. from The University of the Arts. Before joining Manlius Pebble Hill, she worked in the Philadelphia area as an art and design educator and design-thinking leader. Her professional experience includes over 16 years of freelance production in film and television and project management in interactive exhibition space design. She was the founder and president of a toy company, The Get Set Club, which was built upon a utility patent she received for a method of teaching. It was that experience that motivated her to bring play and project-based learning into education. KAREN BAKKE, who holds a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in design, works successfully in a wide variety of mediums. She is a jeweler and silversmith and also works in handmade paper. Karen teaches textile design and interior design rendering classes at Syracuse University, where she is the chair of the Department of Environmental Arts, Consumer Studies and Retailing. She does calligraphy and illumination and collects 19th and 20th century antiques. Her work has been shown extensively and is marked by a strong sense of composition and color. WENDY KISLIK BLANCK has been creating art objects since high school. She was trained in jewelry making and expanded into other mediums including fused glass. She loves creating one-of-a-kind pieces and exploring how different color glass combines and how to manipulate shapes. She also loves vibrant colors and sparkling glass which she tries to include in most of her work. Wendy looks at art as creating order from chaos. Fused glass is a lengthy process. Precision glass cutting is challenging the fusing phase can take 10 to 30 hours, and each piece is fused a minimum of two times. The glass is heated to between 1200 and 1500 degrees, and it is necessary to heat and cool the glass slowly to avoid cracking. ROBERT COLLEY is an award-winning photographer who has been represented in galleries in Upstate New York and Cape Cod and in various publications. Retired from Syracuse University, he is currently the publisher of Standing Stone Books and executive editor of Stone Canoe, a journal of arts, literature and social commentary. His book of Scotland photographs will be published in the fall of 2015.

HALL GROAT, SR. was born in Syracuse at the end of the Depression and learned at an early age how to be independent. Growing up in a family business, he gravitated toward sales. At five years old, his neighbors became his first customers. He was a product of Edward Smith, Nottingham, and Central High Schools, where he began his art studies. On his 20th birthday, he was drafted and served as a combat rifleman in Korea. Two years later, he entered Syracuse University as an art major, graduating in 1959. After five years working in commercial art, he transitioned into self-employment as a painter. Forty-five years later, Hall and son Hall II formed a partnership in an international art business, New York Art Collection/Two Generations of American Art. Both men have traveled the world in search of better ways to serve the demand for their art and educational programs. In his new book, “They Called Me the Brush-Slinger / The Business of Art,” released in January 2012, Hall discusses his 45-year venture in self-employment as an artist. Learn more about Hall on his website, www.hallgroat.com. NICK FRENAY ’09 & NOAH KELLMAN ’09 : Nick Frenay and Noah Kellman have been almost inseparable for about 14 years. After meeting in the 3rd grade, the two radically different children (Nick the quiet teacher’s pet, Noah the outgoing troublemaker) quickly discovered a shared affinity for music. After founding and leading a small jazz ensemble with Nick on trumpet and Noah on piano, they started performing in open mic nights around the city and playing gigs at local restaurants and outdoor music festivals. Quickly becoming staples of the Upstate New York jazz scene, their performance abilities would soon take them around the world. As high schoolers they would be accepted into various conglomerate bands and music workshops in locations ranging from Vail, CO to Paris, France, and even taking them both onto the red carpet at the 2009 GRAMMY Awards. Aside from their interests in jazz, Nick and Noah both harbored an intense interest in pop music, both singing in and arranging for a local a cappella group, teaching themselves guitar and pursuing songwriting in their spare time. Now five years out of high school, the two friends have both migrated to different east coast cities–Nick to Boston, Noah to the East Village of Manhattan–but that hasn’t stopped them from collaborating. Inspired by the shared memories of the summertimes in their youth, they wrote/recorded their debut release as a duo, “Summer EP,” the first in a series of four seasonal 5-track records. Their most current release, “Winter EP,” celebrates the magical qualities of winter— coziness, celebration, family, and the simple enchantment of a crackling fire with snow resting outside the window.

ANDREW RUSSO, an MPH 3rd Grade parent, is known for the diversity of his interests and experiences, whether in business, music or politics. A native of Syracuse, NY, Russo is a graduate of The Juilliard School, and pursued post-graduate studies in Leipzig and Paris with pianist/alternative pedagogue Frederic Chiu. Andrew’s early career was spent as an advocate of American composers and American music. He has performed in many of the world’s cultural capitals – Paris, London, Moscow, Rome, Brussels, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Buenos Aires, etc. His appearance as a finalist in the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition drew attention, when he became the first pianist to perform a significant work using alternative techniques requiring the inside and frame of the piano as well as the keys. He was featured in Peter Rosen’s internationally broadcast documentary “Playing of the Edge” not long after the competition, and profiled in NY Times writer James Barron’s book, “The Making of a Steinway Concert Grand.”

Page 16: MPH Red & White Benefit Catalog

With eleven commercial recordings to his credit, the highlight of Andrew’s recording career was a 2007 Grammy nomination for his Black Box Records released of music by John Corigliano. His video of Jacob TV’s “The Body of Your Dreams” has become a popular draw on You Tube and was broadcast on Dutch television. Andrew’s most recent recording appears on Naxos later this year and features new works of Aaron Kernis, including Three Flavors for piano and orchestra, commissioned by Russo.

DANA HUYGE ’05 is an accomplished violist, and has performed with virtually every professional symphony in Upstate New York. His most prominent positions include section positions with the Grammy award winning Albany Symphony Orchestra and Symphoria, and the David and Florence Niermeyer Principal Viola Chair with the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra. A skilled chamber musician, Mr. Huyge regularly collaborates with his colleagues at Hartwick College for showcase events, where he is the Artist-in-Residence in Viola. Prior to this position, Mr. Huyge also worked with the Rochester based string quintet Gibbs and Main, where he participated in many world premieres specializing in jazz and Columbian inspired music. He also performed as a part of the Sullivan Viola Quartet, featured at the banquet of the 2012 International Viola Congress.

Mr. Huyge is a strong advocate for contemporary music. In 2009, he commissioned a viola sonata from Karl Henning, and later gave the world premiere. As part of his work with Gibbs & Main, he recorded an entire disc of world premieres. The Albany Symphony has many recording projects in production, and recently released a disc of works by the great American composer John Harbison, in addition to collaborating with pianist Andrew Russo on a disc featuring the works of Aaron Jay Kernis. Mr. Huyge's private studio has been open for more than 5 years, in which he primarily teaches the Suzuki method. He also maintains a performing arts blog at www.danahuyge.com, in which he reflects on life as a music teacher/performer, and produces notes and musings on upcoming concerts.

"Cheering on MPH: Alumni Goal"

Let's show MPH what we are all about and unify in our support of our alma mater. I am challenging all alumni to join me in renewing our personal support and give time, treasure, and talent back to the place that gave us so much. Faculty, administration, parents, and students are on board. Let's show them that we are too.
