Company Overview Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) develops and markets proprietary, high-performance, advanced analog power management integrated circuits (ICs) for automotive, industrial, consumer, computing, and communications products. Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Los Gatos, California, the company has three core strengths: strong analog design expertise, deep system-level and applications knowledge, and an innovative proprietary process technology. These combined advantages enable MPS to deliver highly integrated monolithic products that offer energy efficient, cost-effective solutions.

Members of MPS’ design team all hail from distinguished analog semiconductor companies with an average 15 years of experience per designer. The team has successfully brought innovative product suites to market and is a key factor in MPS’ product superiority and mass market appeal. These talented individuals, coupled with MPS’ technology advantages, have created an emerging leader in the future of analog IC technology.

MPS’ systems and applications expertise stems from a complementary team of industry veterans who possess highly-technical electronics knowledge, sophisticated system and IC level design capabilities and extensive customer application experience. MPS’ applications team works closely with potential and existing customers to identify new product opportunities, reduce time-to-market (TTM), and thoroughly support any application.

MPS’ proprietary process technology is a key competitive advantage. Many conventional analog technologies are limited by an inability to support integration of power devices at high power levels. This results in unacceptably large semiconductors and/or significant levels of power loss. Other analog semiconductor vendors rely on multiple chip solutions to avoid these issues. In contrast, MPS’ proprietary process technology overcomes each of these issues. Implemented at standard CMOS foundries, this unique process integrates bipolar transistors and CMOS devices with a highly efficient DMOS power transistor. This allows MPS to design and deliver smaller, single-chip power management ICs that are highly efficient and accurate. MPS’ single process technology simplifies the design process, and is applicable across a wide range of analog applications. The result is higher productivity and significant cost advantages for any MPS customers. In addition, MPS continuously expands its portfolio of intellectual property and proprietary processes to enhance its products and market share.

MPS’ product families include: • Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) backlight inverter ICs, used in lighting LCD displays such as

those found in notebook computers, flat panel displays and televisions. • DC/DC converter ICs, providing the supply voltages to a variety of electronic devices. • LED driver ICs, used in lighting displays such as those found in cellular handsets and handheld

computing devices. • Class D audio amplifier ICs, providing an audio solution with smaller size and higher efficiency than

conventional Class AB audio amplifiers; Class D is gaining popularity in digital home and mobile entertainment systems.

MPS partners with world-class foundries to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions to meet the demanding standards set by its customers. MPS maintains a global presence with sales offices in Taiwan, China, Korea, and Japan, which operate under MPS International, Ltd.

MP1038 Full Bridge CCFL Controller

DESCRIPTION The MP1038 is a fixed operating frequency inverter controller that controls four external N-Channel power MOSFETs in a full-bridge configuration. The inverter is designed to power one or more cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) to backlight liquid crystal displays. Its full-bridge architecture converts unregulated DC input voltages to the nearly pure sine waves required to ignite and operate CCFL. For reliable lamp ignition, the operating frequency is set by an external resistor and during startup, is temporarily swept toward the unloaded resonant frequency of the tank. The built-in burst oscillator can be synchronized with an external clock to minimize display scan interference. Burst mode or analog mode dimming is controlled with an external analog signal. Built-in fault management features include an open lamp regulator, a transformer secondary peak current regulator, and a dual-mode fault timer. The secondary over-current timeout can be shortened with external components. Built-in current limits for the external switches protect against inadvertent shorts. The MP1038 is available in TSSOP28 and SOIC28 packages.

FEATURES • Controls Four External, Low Cost, N-Channel

MOSFETs • Fixed Operating Frequency • Input Voltage Range of 10V to 32V • Lamp Current and Voltage Regulation • Full-Wave Sense Amp • Analog and Burst Mode Dimming Control • Integrated Burst Mode Oscillator and Modulator • Soft-On and Soft-Off Burst Envelope • Open Lamp Protection • Secondary Over-Current Protection • Dual-mode, Fault Timer • Available in TSSOP28 and SOIC28 Packages

APPLICATIONS • Desktop LCD Flat Panel Displays • Flat Panel Video Displays • LCD TVs and Monitors “MPS” and “The Future of Analog IC Technology” are Trademarks of Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. The MP1038 is covered by US Patents 6,683,422, 6,316,881, and 6,114,814. Other Patents Pending.

MP1521 High Efficiency

White LED Driver

General Description The MP1521 is a constant-current Boost Regulator. This IC has three individual current-sensing feedbacks, which are ideal for driving multiple strings of series connected LEDs. The OLS pin is designed for detecting loose or open LED connections.

The IC uses a peak current, constant minimum off-time architecture. The feedback pins measure voltage across sense resistors in series with the LED strings. When supplying a bias current of 20mA, the voltage drop across the sense resistor is only 0.4V to minimize power loss. Either a DC voltage or a PWM signal at the BRT/PWM input can control the LED brightness.

The MP1521 has an on board power MOSFET switch that is protected by current limit, open load shutdown, thermal shutdown, and under voltage lockout.

Class D Audio Amplifier Product Selection Guide

Features and Benefits Features Benefits

High Power Rating MPS audio products achieve high power capabilities in small packages without additional heat sinking.

Class A/B Sound Quality; Class D Efficiency

MPS audio products utilize a proprietary circuit topology with deep feedback and integrated Power FETS. This gives the efficiency of Class D and the sound quality of Class AB

Wide Voltage Range Our wide input voltage ranges give designers the flexibility to optimize output power for a specific voltage.

Single Supply Our products require only 1 supply

High Efficiency Our efficiency ratings are significantly higher than other Class D products. In addition our wide operating voltage eliminates the DC to DC conversion loss found in notebook applications thus eliminating large heat sinks.

Small Form Factor Our patented circuit architecture and power FET integration creates an efficient and low cost solution.

Low THD+N With a THD+N of < 0.1% @ 1W at 1Khz into an 8 ohm load, our performance is equivalent to or better than other comparable audio products.
