Assignment Guidance – Task 1 Part A
Session Objectives Understand the marking criteria for task 1 of the assignment
Task 1 – Part A[P1] This task requires you to make a presentation on the topics given
within the assignment, Although it asks for a presentation use the word presentation in
the widest sense – you could produce a booklet or word document instead,
If you choose to do a presentation ensure that it looks like a presentation (don’t cram too much text on the slides) and use speaker notes area for explanation.
• P1 is straightforward and you should refer to the detail in the learning outcome (LO) section of the presentation to help decide on the content.
P1 – describe network technologiesP1 – describe network technologies
LO Content - What a network is… Network devices:
Different types of server; workstations; interconnection devices; network cards; vendor specific hardware (all hardware covered) Networking operating systems:
Windows, Linux, Novell Layout
Cabling and connectors, types of wireless topologies, Networking protocols:
SNMPv3, ICMP, FTP, HTTP,
• What is it• What is it for / its job / its function / why needed• How its works (keep it simple)
Describe Means….. Clear straight forward, main points logically linkedDescribe Means….. Clear straight forward, main points logically linked
LO Content - What a network is… Network hardware and connectors
Servers What is one / what is its job / why needed Different types of server
Clients What is one / what is its job / why needed Different types of client
NIC What is one / what is its job / why needed Different types of client
Network operating systems What is one / what do the do / services provided / why needed Types e.g. Windows, Linux, Novell, Citrix
Network Layouts Bus, Star, Ring, Tree, Mesh
Describe each topology include a diagram, +ve/-ves of each
Protocols SNMP, ICMP, HTTP, FTP, SNMP –
For each describe what it is / what for / why needed – diagrams may help of using ICMP (ping trace route) & SNMP
Connecting Hardware Switch Vendor Specific Hardware NAS Hub Patch Panel Repeater Router Bridge Gateway Modem UPS Wireless Access Point Rack Mount Cabinet
Connectors Cables: UTP, STP, Coax, Fibre
Describe each cable type along with its associated connector
WIFI types – 802.11n / 802.11ac Describe each type of wireless
connection including issues and speed
For each hardware item must
describe what is it, what it is for, why it is needed and different types
