TERM 2 WEEK 3 OATLEY WEST LANTERN - The school by the park 3.5.2021

As children progress through their school years, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essen-tial skills of reading, writing and mathematics—skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults. NAPLAN is a point in time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is pro-gressing in literacy and numeracy against the na-tional standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in NAPLAN tests. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides addition-al information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress. NAPLAN as-sesses literacy and numeracy skills; the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. These are skills that students have already learnt through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure that students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Excessive preparation for NAPLAN is not useful and can lead to unnecessary anxiety. If you have any questions about your child’s preparation for NAPLAN, please make a time to speak with your child’s teacher. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress. You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply do their best. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process—it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. Literacy & Numeracy Week (NAPLAN) in Primary schools is next week, Tuesday 11th May, ends Fri-day 14th May.

Tuesday 11th Language Conventions and writing Wednesday 12th Reading Thursday 13th Numeracy Friday 14th Final day for individual students to complete catch up tests.

MOTHER’S DAY Mother’s Day is coming up next weekend, Sunday 9th May. We thank the hard working P&C for or-ganising gifts for students and take this opportuni-ty to wish all our wonderful mothers a memorable day full of love and appreciation. Orders close tomorrow 4th May. P&C MEETING Our P&C meeting is tomorrow night, Tuesday 4th May in the School Library @ 6.30pm. CONDOLENCES Our thoughts go out to Anne Laurence and her family who have lost a beloved husband and fa-ther, David last week. Anne taught for many years at OWPS and was a popular teacher and member of staff. VALUE OF THE WEEK— COOPERA-TION Work together to achieve common goals. Help each other to succeed. Work together to peacefully resolve conflict.

How long have you been with DET? I have been with the Department of Education for 19 years and have been at OWPS for 6 years. What do you like about OWPS? The beautiful staff, community and amazing stu-dents. Also the lovely environment, the grounds, gardens and outdoor learning spaces. Favourite thing to do? Spending time with family and friends. I enjoy swimming, eating out and bush walking. Favourite sports team? Wests Tigers Favourite food? I love all food, love preparing and cooking for other people. I like trying all international foods. Food brings people together and is an important part of celebrating.

OWPS has registered for the Wonder rewards program to earn sports equipment for our school. Simply collect bread bags or wraps bags (any kind, does not have to be "Wonder") and bread bag tags and place in the collection box at school. The program runs 12th May until 25th June. See attached poster.

3D PRINTING

Last Thursday, Darren Avery (STEM.T4L Leader), conducted a masterclass in 3D printing with 5/6 Blue. Stu-

dents were very excited to explore this technology. 5/6 Blue are now our expert group, and they will be

leading other classes through this process. As exciting as the outcome is (and we were very excited), the

main focus is on problem solving and the design process.

It is wonderful to see so many excited students when discussing the PRC in our Library lessons.

Well done to the following students for completing the Challenge:
