In the Prentice stateroom was found Mr. John D. Roekfeiler. Mr. Rockefeller smiled a t the newspaper men, and..when asked how the Standard Oil Company was getting on. replied:—"Ob, I guess they are making a little oil now.**

Four years' ago the rapidly Increasing Imputation ot Van Nest found Itself -without adequate protection against fire. The nearest^ Are apparatus was quartered "at Daly and Trexhont avenues. In Tremont. three miles away.- Headed by James J. Mulhearn. a committee of Van Mesters waited on .the late Deputy Fire Commissioner Hugh Bonner and told him of their Plight.
They-naked the city to supply the fire fighting apparatus, with which the volunteers could fight Che fires, and connect the regular fire alarm system, which the city bad already established In that part of the Bronx, with the quarters of^the volunteer companies, which the citizens o t Van Nest would provide.
Mr. Bonner recommended the proposition to the then Fire Commissioner O'Brien. with the result that Van Nest Hose Company Ko. 1 was located at Van Nest avenue end TJnlonport road, and Company Ko. 2. a
mile further east at Rosedsle avenue and 177th street. •
