over the last two centuries has (I quote the secretaryof the United Nations) “helped prevent many fami-lies and communities from sliding into poverty”.

Furthermore, “Co-operatives have provided reli-able access to credit and other financial services formany small business holders”.

In my opinion, it’s always the right time to cam-paign for more power to the people, and more localsupport for our communities, and now is definitelythe time to buy a share in your local co-op for a verymodest investment and put your hand up for a littlework that will give you an enormous stake in a greattomorrow.

I think that there’s a little bit of those Musketeers

in all of us… if only for the fabulous plumes on theirhats.

It’s all of us working for one common cause: com-munity. And the unity is sought to provide securityand support for local people, from local people.

Co-ops put communities in control of theireconomies, foster pride in achievement, enhance lo-cal culture and yet also ask members to take respon-sibility for the toil needed to keep the venture afloat.

The Elands Community Co-op Shop has beenquite a ride for the members. It’s hard work, but wedo remember to have fun along the way.

I’d sum up our experience so far as being this: of-fering something for nothing to gain everything. Andthat’s no small thing.
