Step 1 – What is an infographic?

• Infographics are visual representations of information, data or knowledge

• Use when you need to explain complex information quickly

Read an infographic:

1. What percentage of deaths are caused by tornadoes in the 4 & 5 category of the EF Scale?

2. What city was hit by the most deadly tornado since 1957?

3. Which state experiences the most tornadoes on average each year?

4. How many tornadoes does SC experience in an average year?

• Magazines

• Newspapers

• Web sites

• Use bibliography slips to gather citation information. SAVE THE SLIPS!

Day 2, Step 2: Cite Sources using Easy Bib

• Use appropriate form depending on your source

• Fill in as much of the information as you can

• Copy and paste the citation into the last slide of your project

1. Pick colors and fonts based on message

2. Create infographic with citations using PowerPoint

3. Save the PowerPoint to your student folder (Pick the person who is most likely NOT to be absent to log into the computer.)

Color Schemes That Work

• Yellow on blue background

Color Schemes That Work

• White on black background

Color Schemes That Work

• Black on yellow background

Colors to Avoid

• Red on green is hard for those with colorblindness

Colors to Avoid

• If you want to use red, go for burgundy instead

• Red causes an agitated emotional response

• Use white, not black text

Colors Evoke Emotion

• Green makes the viewer feel involved with topic

• Blue indicates a calm message

• Yellow is for hope and cheerfulness

• Purple is childlike, save for “light” topics

• Black indicates power

Fonts

• Type can express mood and emotion

• Do not use more than three different fonts

• Bookman, Garamond, and Times New

Roman are good for large blocks of text

• Arial and Comic Sans are good for headlines

• Make limited use of CAPITAL LETTERS

• Remember – get your content in FIRST, then format colors and fonts

Day 3, Step 2: Create infographic and cite sources

• Power Point will be used to create the infographic

• Rubric (attached to website)

• Don’t forget citations on the last slide

Power Point Tricks to Know

• Right Click to get to Bring to Front, Send to Back

• Double click on image to get Format menu including Set color transparent

• Change slide orientation on the Design tab

• Create graphs in Excel and Paste into slide

• Save to student folder on the H: drive
