Identify and use possessive nouns and pronouns to show possession.

A possessive noun shows who or what owns or has something.

Use the following rules to form possessive nouns:

Mia’s tea

Kira’s desk

James’s homework

Add an apostrophe and –s to singular nouns.◦ EX: father’s pants – Callie’s shoes – aunt’s ring

Add only an apostrophe to plural nouns that end in –s.◦ EX: girls’ jacket – Joneses’ budget – babies’ blanket

Add an apostrophe and –s to plural nouns that do not end in -s.◦ EX: women’s wardrobe – children’s clothing –

When two or more people or things share possession, add an apostrophe and a –s to the last noun.◦ EX: Laura, Anne, and Allison’s art project

Create a possessive noun phrase using the clues listed below. Make sure you correctly use apostrophes and –s if needed.

Possessive pronouns show ownership or a close relationship.

Possessive pronouns can replace possessive nouns. Daniel’s action figures are pretty cool. His action figures are pretty cool.

Possessive pronouns can replace a noun that is a possession.

Daniel’s collection is bigger than my collection. Daniel’s collection is bigger than mine.

Sometimes you may use the possessive pronoun before a noun.

This is my outfit, but here is your shirt.

Unlike possessive nouns, possessive pronouns never include apostrophes.

Do not confuse possessive pronouns with contractions, which always have apostrophes.

Your suitcase is missing one of its handles. It’s sad that you’re going home.
