Stewards Space Journey 2008 – 2014

Who would have thought where it would take us?

Timeline:2008

*Easter 2008: Invited to take part in the Leading Space Education Programme (LSEP) by the Science and Technology Facility Council (STFC).

*Attended the first LSEP Conference at Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, Didcot

*Provided Space related Science Clubs for our students

2008

*Booked Jerry Stone to deliver all day space activities.

*Stewards students, staff and astronomers present Stewards Space Spectacular, plenty of Space-related hands-on activities for Primary School children and their parents on a Saturday.

2009*Attracted two local astronomers to help deliver space education to our students and the wider community.

*Applied for and won a telescope from the Society for Popular Astronomy (SPA).

*Our students attend Institute of Physics lectures on space themes.

*Started the Community Space watch evenings for our students, primary school children, their parents and the community led by our local astronomers.

2009

*Borrowed Moon Rocks and Meteors from STFC.

*Took our Community Space Watch evening to another secondary school in Harlow for their students.

*Primary School Space Story Competition (12 schools)

2009*Our students attend the SPA conference and collect their telescope. (Yr7 and Yr8)

*NSEW: Space Camp Competition (Yr7 and Yr8)

*Attend the School Observing Night at the University of Hertfordshire’s observatory (Yr 7, 8 and 10)

*Students attend European Week of Astronomy and Space Science Schools Day, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield. Visit to Astrium site.

*Y7 team take part in the National Physical Laboratory's Water Rocket Competition.

2009*Our students provided a Space Trail at Harlow Town library for primary school children and their parents

*Space related science clubs for our students

*Stewards students, staff and astronomers present Stewards Space Spectacular, plenty of Space-related hands-on activities for Primary School children and their parents on a Saturday.

*Students attended IoP 2009 School and Colleges lecture on Exploring the Universe presented by Dr Andy Newsam.

2010*Yr7,8 and 9 students attend the UK Space Agency launch in London.

*Community Space Watch evenings continue.

*Staff attend LSEP Conference at Atrium, Stevenage.

*Space Science evening involving Stewards students and Science staff. Attracting primary school children and their parents.

*Staff attend ESERO-UK Space Education Day in Warwick University.

*Our students continue to attend Institute of Physics lectures on space themes.

*Community Space Watch evenings continue.

2012*Year 8 attended the Science Education Access Day at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, Didcot

*Year 7 attended ESERO-UK funded ‘Have Space Suit will Travel’ in London.

*Our students continue to attend Institute of Physics lectures on space themes.

2012*Community Space Watch evenings continue.

*Space related Science Clubs continue.

2013*Year 9 AGT attend the Space Academy Master-class at Science Alive, Harlow.

*Our students continue to attend Institute of Physics lectures on space themes.

2014 onwards

*Build our own Observatory on our site.

*Offer GCSE Astronomy as an evening class to our students and the community.

*Register and use the Liverpool and Faulkes remotely controlled telescopes via the National School’s Observatory during our Community Space Watch evenings and GCSE evening class.

2014 onwards

*Develop expertise in taking astronomy photographs.

*Invite more Cub Scout/Scout/Girl Guides to Stewards Space School to study for their Astronomy Badges.

*Hire out observatory to local astronomy groups.

*Big Lottery Fund: ‘Awards for All’ Outcomes:

*People have better chances in life: Better access to training , development of life skills

*Stronger Communities: more active citizens working together

*Improved Rural and Urban Environments: communities have better access and enjoy.

*Healthier and more active people and communities.

*Public Engagement Small Awards Scheme (Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

*Projects must be relevant to publicising engagement or teaching about the STFC science and technology areas, for example: Space, astronomy, cosmology etc.
