Use the Blur, Eyedropper and Brush tools to smooth wrinkles and reduce skin redness. Assignment Instructions: 1. Open “teen.psd” and save it as your_last_name_blemishes.psd to the appropriate student folder. 2. In the layers palette, right-click the background layer and duplicate the layer; you will preserve the original layer and work on the duplicated layer. (This is typically a good practice in case things go wrong—you will be able to return to the original layer to start over if needed). 3. Choose the spot healing brush. 4. Reset it by right clicking the “band-aid” in the options bar In the top right underneath the menus. The default brush size is between 13 and 19 pixels which should work well here Solano County Office of Education Christine A. Long, Digital Arts Instructor (Dixon High School) Page 1 of 5

Portrait Retouching – Blemishes & WrinklesAssignment Worksheet

Materials/Resources: This activity uses Adobe Photoshop CS, CS2 or CS3. The instructions were designed using a PC. If Macs are being used for this assignment, then the associated keyboard controls such as “Cmd” instead of “Ctrl” will need to be substituted.

Objective: Use Photoshop tools to improve a portrait by removing blemishes and wrinkles.

Use the Spot Healing Brush to remove blemishes and moles.Use the Healing Brush to smooth skin.Use the Blur, Eyedropper and Brush tools to smooth wrinkles and reduce skin redness.

Assignment Instructions:1. Open “teen.psd” and save it as your_last_name_blemishes.psd to the

appropriate student folder.2. In the layers palette, right-click the background layer and duplicate the layer;

you will preserve the original layer and work on the duplicated layer. (This is typically a good practice in case things go wrong—you will be able to return to the original layer to start over if needed).

3. Choose the spot healing brush.4. Reset it by right clicking the “band-aid” in the options bar In the top right underneath the menus. The default brush size is between 13 and 19 pixels which should work well here

5. To use the Spot Healing Brush tool to cover some of the moles and facial flaws on the face, all you need to do is place your cursor over the spot you want to fix and then click the mouse button. Instant zit removal! Try it by

placing your cursor over the mole on the teen's cheek on the right side of the image. Then click the mole (See image below)

6. Click with the Spot Healing Brush tool to fix as many spots as you can. If you get a blur when you click, undo the step and see if there are other locations to fix.

For the next set of steps, you want to use the Healing Brush (not Spot Healing brush) tool. The Healing Brush tool differs from the Spot Healing Brush tool in that it requires a source point that marks the spot where the brush will start borrowing texture to use when you stroke. If you want to make an area of skin smooth, you need to choose (as your source) an area that is already smooth.

The area you select doesn't need to be the same color. However, it needs to give you an area that has no color changes within it. When you stroke with the Healing Brush tool, you see a copy of whatever source you are using. However, as soon as you finish stroking, the tool works whatever process it uses and changes that visible stroke into a new texture with the original colors of the area. When you try this, you'll see how it works.

1. Choose the Healing Brush tool from the slot that contains the Spot Healing Brush tool in the toolbox. Reset it by right-clicking in the options bar. Again, the default setting will work well for us.

2. Move your cursor to same location as the large yellow dot in Figure at right. On the Mac, press the OPTION key and click. On Windows, press the ALT key and click. That sets the source point. Then just brush along the path of the arrows under the teenager's eye. That will help cover up the puffy eyelids.

3. Continue to fix up the boy's forehead with short strokes rather than clicks. Use whichever version of the Healing brush you prefer. If you choose to fix his forehead with the Healing Brush tool, the same cheek area you've already used is a good image source. You can get rid of the hot spot on his nose with either a larger brush or a short stroke.

4. Even after all the fixing you've done on the teen's forehead, it's likely that it's still fairly bumpy (and somewhat red). Here's a way to fix these problems.

5. Choose the Blur tool (Keyboard shortcut—type an R). Reset it by right-clicking in the options bar. Choose the 100-pixel soft round brush in the Brushes Preset picker.

6. Brush over the teen's forehead a few times to smooth it out. Try not to brush his eyes or his hair. The amount of blurring on each stroke is set in the Strength field in the options bar as shown below.

7. If you're bothered by the too-red forehead area once you've smoothed it out, use the Eyedropper tool to pick up a better skin color from the cheek area on the image.

8. Choose the Brush tool and the 200-pixel soft brush. Set the Brush tool opacity to 10% and the Mode to Lighter Color. Brush over the teenager's forehead, and you'll remove the red.

9. Don’t forget to check for redeye using the redeye tool.10. Compare your results with the results below. Your image should be lookin’ good!11. Save and close the file.

Per instructor, students bring in photos for scanning and retouching; use a digital photo of themselves or friends or family and practice correcting skin imperfections.
