Definition of Characterization

Characterization is a literary device that is used step by step in literature to highlight and explain the details about a character in a

story.

1. It is in the initial stage where the writer introduces the character with noticeable emergence and then following the introduction of the character, the writer often talks about his behavior; then as the story progresses, the thought-process of the character.

2. The next stage involves the character expressing his opinions and ideas and getting into conversations with the rest of the characters. The final part shows how others in the story respond to the character’s personality.

In My Father’s HouseAn author can use two approaches to deliver information

about a character and build an image of it:

1. Direct or explicit characterization

This kind of characterization takes a direct approach towards building the character. It uses another character, narrator or the protagonist himself to tell the readers or audience about the subject.

2. Indirect or implicit characterization

This is a more subtle way of introducing the character to the audience. The audience has to deduce for themselves the characteristics of the character by observing his/her thought process, behavior, speech, way of talking, appearance, and way of communication with other characters and also by discerning the response of other characters.

Oscie Miss Buttonworth

The way he describe his seven year old daughter was that she was wild as a

colt in spring with the wisdom of Methuselah, stubborn as a mule, strong

and unwavering.

She was a feminist, independent of a man. She made her own money and

had opinions of her own.

He was tall and dashing. He sported a mustache and dimples that made most swoon like a hooty owl. You knew he

was there when he walked into a room.”

Will McLean

I wore a dress of blue taffeta and a starched petticoat that scratched me. My

hair hung in loose brown, blond curls down my back. I was the perfect image of

a seven year old proper southern girl.

ComparisonComparison is a rhetorical or literary device in which a writer compares or contrasts two people, places, things, or

ideas. In our everyday life, we compare people and things to express ourselves vividly.

Q. Which literary element does the author use in the above statement?

A. Dialect-The way the person speaks contributes to the way the reader envisions the character.

B. Characterization-Direct Characterization, the author uses the physical descriptions of the character to get the reader to envision the physical form of the character and imagine what he or she looks like.

C. Imagery- The way the author uses figurative language to paint an image of a scene in the book. Objects, actions, and ideas are used in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses creating mental image in our mind.

Fiction and Non-fiction Connection

Find Text evidence in the story to support the fact that Southern felt very different about their way of life vs. Northerners.

Sectionalism

As the United States moved closer to civil war, the country divided more and more. Sectionalism became a problem. This is the loyalty to a part of a nation, but not the nation as a whole. Americans saw themselves as Southerners or Northerners. People who lived in different parts of the country often disagreed. This was true even in Congress. Sectionalism began to grow early in the 1800s, right after the

The Antebellum Period in American history is generally considered to be the period before the civil war and after the War of 1812. It was characterized by the rise of abolition and the gradual polarization of the country between abolitionists and supporters of slavery. During this same time, the country’s economy began shifting in the north to manufacturing as the Industrial Revolution began, while in the south,

a cotton boom made plantations the center of the economy.
