Ms Coll Schneid, Otto 350 Papers, 1929-1973 77 boxes and 99 items (12 metres) Papers include research materials for his unpublished book on 20 th century Jewish artists in Europe, manuscripts for his published and unpublished works, galleys for his published writings. The research materials include correspondence with more than 120 Jewish artists, copies of their exhibition catalogues, and other published works, and photographs of their art. Most of these artists perished during the Second World War. Otto Schneid, 1900-1974, art historian, professor, writer, and artist was born in Jablunkova, Czechoslovakia, 30 January 1900, to Polish parents, Jacob Schneid and his wife. He was educated in Silesia; studied in Vienna and Paris. Later he lectured and travelled in Europe. He published Das chinesische Vordergrundbild : Tier-und Pflanzenmalerei Ostasiens in 1934. In 1936-1938 he established an art museum in Vilna. During the 1930s he began work on a dictionary of twentieth century Jewish artists to be published in Vienna in 1938, but the plates were confiscated by the Nazis. In 1939 he went to Palestine (Israel) as a research student at Jerusalem University. There he met and married Miriam Goldshmidt in 1945. In 1946 his son Jacob was born, and his book on biblical frescoes of Dura-Europos, [The Synagogue Drawings at Dura-Europos : an Ancient Jewish Creation and Its Place in the History of Art] was published. Between 1946 and 1948 his books on Rembrandt [ha-Tanakh bi-temumot Rembrandt] and classic Greek art [Omanut yavan ha-klasit] appeared. In 1950 his son Adam was born. From 1948-1960 he taught art history at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology), Haifa, and continued to write about art. He travelled to Greece in 1955. In 1960 he decided to concentrate on his creative work – poetry, painting, sculpting, and moved to the United States, where he lived from1960-1963. During that period he had seven one-man shows there and one in Canada. In 1964 he moved to Canada where he continued to paint and to write. He died in Toronto in 1974.

1999 Accession Includes additional notes, manuscripts for Schneid's published and unpublished writings, correspondence with artists, scholars, politicians and diplomats, photographs of art work by the artists, many of whom were alive in Europe before 1939. Copies of some of his published writings, and books, pamphlets, exhibition catalogues of some of the artists with whom he corresponded are part of the collection. Many of the artists in this accession are not represented in the notes and drafts for his projected book on twentieth century Jewish artists that are in the first accession.
