My Goals
To give you the academic and social skills you need to progress to third grade.
To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment.
To help you make new friends and discover new interests.
Class Subjects The subjects we cover during second
grade are: Reading Math Language Spelling Science and Social Studies (Social Living)
Reading Monday: review vocabulary
words Tuesday: read and discuss
story Wednesday: phonics skills are
taught Thursday: reading skills are
taught Friday: test day, introduce
vocabulary words for next week
AR is a program designed to encourage you to read. I ask that you read 20 minutes every night. This will certainly improve your reading fluency, so you may become an excellent reader.
Math ABC’s of Math requires you to
use critical thinking skills. You must read the problem,
draw a picture, write a complete number sentence, and always finish with a label. For example:
2 dogs + 3 dogs = 5 dogs 4 bears + 6 lions = 10 animals
ABC’s of Math also drills basic math facts. These facts will be timed and tested weekly. You must master these facts in second grade. I encourage you to practice your facts each day.
Language/Spelling Language lessons will correlate
with skills taught in reading and spelling.
You will learn about nouns, verbs, pronouns, and adjectives.
Spelling words are written in the students planner on Friday. Test are always given on Thursday.
We begin the year with 15 words and 2 dictation sentences. Later in the year, the list will increase to 20 words.
Science
We will learn many interesting and exciting concepts in science.
We will study matter, sound, light, electricity, plants, animals, the earth, and then weather.
You are encouraged to bring things from home, which relate to the topics we are discussing.
Social Studies We will learn about communities,
history, geography, map skills, government, citizenship, economics, and different cultures from around our world.
Again, you are encouraged to bring things from home, which relate to the topics we are discussing.
Classroom Community
Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.
Our basic class rules are: Be respectful and responsible. Be organized and follow directions. Be on time. Be prepared.
Homework You are responsible for completing your homework
each night. Homework is always copied in your planner. I will assign about 45 minutes of homework every
night. This should include 20 minutes of reading. Your homework is due every morning. If homework is not completed, you will work on it at
recess. This will also be marked on your discipline card and a note may be written in your planner.
Homework is never given on Fridays.
Tardiness
School starts at 8:10 A.M. Morning work is assigned each day. If you
are late, this will be assigned for homework. If you aren’t in the classroom by the time the
bell rings, please check in at the school office before coming to class.
Let’s Have a Great Year!
