organisms Antigens – foreign substances i.e. pathogens,

germs, viruses, bacteria etc.2. destroys & removes dead/damaged cells

from body

Page 3: Ms. Morris’ Lesson

First Line of Defense:• Skin: keeps pathogens from entering• Mucus, cilia, sneezing, coughing: • Saliva

Page 4: Ms. Morris’ Lesson

Second Line of Defense:• Inflammatory Response: fluid & WBC’s attack

pathogens in the area of infection (i.e. cut – swollen, red)

• Phagocytes: WBC’s that engulf & destroy pathogens

Page 5: Ms. Morris’ Lesson

Third Line of Defense:• targets specific pathogens• B-cells (WBC): produce antibodies that

destroy pathogen• T-cells (WBC): identify pathogens &

distinguish one kind from another

Antibodies – destroysSpecific antigens

Passive Immunity: antibodies come from another source (i.e. mother – newborn baby)

Active Immunity: You produce your own antibodies by:

1. Having a disease i.e. chicken pox2. Getting a vaccine i.e. polio,

chicken pox etc.

Page 9: Ms. Morris’ Lesson

Vaccine: consists of dead or weakened pathogens; they trigger an immune response; body produces antibodies against that disease
