NORTHWAY (MARY L) PAPERS

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Mary Louise Northway was born in Toronto, May 28,1909, daughter of Arthur Garfield Northway and hiswife Lucy (MacKellar) Northway. Her grandfatherwas John Neathern Northway, founder of theNorthway chain of clothing stores which flourishedin a number of ontario towns. His wife wasCatherine (Mackay) Northway whose family hademigrated from Brora, Sutherlandshire, during theHighland clearances.

Mary Northway received her early education inToronto at Rosedale Public School, Branksome Halland Bishop Strachan School. She entered theUniversity of Toronto, receiving her B.A. inHonours Psychology in 1933, and her M.A. in thesame sUbject in 1936. During 1935-36 she studiedunder Sir Frederick Bartlett at Cambridge,England. In 1939 she received her PhD. from theUniversity of Toronto, her thesis sUbject being"Bartlett's concept of the Schema", laterpublished in The British Journal of Psychology .

Northway joined the staff of the Departmentof Psychology at the University of Toronto in 1933as a Reader, and rose to Associate Professorbefore she left the Department in 1963. From 1938to 1968 she was a lecturer at the Institute ofChild Study where she was supervisor of researchfrom 1951-1968. Her specialty was sociometry, and, starting in 1939, she developed Canadianresearch and pUblication in the sociometry ofchildhood. with the use of the computer in theearly 60's, the new co-ordinated longitudinalstudy at the Institute of Child Study becameinternationally known. This study was at firstsupported by the University and by researchgrants, notably the ontario Mental HealthFoundation. However changes in the late 1960's inthe direction of University support were to causeMary Northway and other retiring staff members ofthe I.C.S. to turn elsewhere for support.

Running concurrently with her academic careerwas Northway's interest in and promotion ofcamping. She was a counselor and later programmedirector at Glen Bernard Camp from 1931-39. Sheran a canoe training camp from 1941-50, and was amember of the Ontario, Canadian, and AmericanCamping Associations. She was a director ofresearch and education for the ontario Camping

Association from 1930 into the 1940's, andinitiated an archives committee in 1967 for itculminating in the archives of the Associationbeing established at Trent University,Peterborough. Northway wrote many articles inCanadian and American camping magazines, as wellas two books for camp counselors: Charting theCounselor's Course, 1940; and the Camp Counselor'sBook in collaboration with Barry Lowes in 1963.

In 1948 Northway became a director of theNorthway Company Ltd. From 1960 to 1963 she waspresident. In the latter year the NorthwayCompany was wound up, and out of the assets theNeathern Trust was created. At this time sheacquired the Northway papers which became thebasis of Alan Wilson's book, John Northway: A BlueSerge Canadian. The Northway papers weredeposited in the Trent University Archives.

The winding up of the Northway Company camewhen Northway was deeply involved in the new coordinated longitudinal studies at the I.C.S. Theillness and death of Dr. Blatz in 1964 coupledwith changes at the University resulted in thisprogramme being greatly curtailed in personnel, and in financial and moral support. Northwayretired from the University in 1968, and in 1969she was able to finance the setting up of theBrora Centre out of the assets of the NorthwayCompany. Two years later the Institute of ChildStudy was placed under the jurisdiction of theCollege of Education with its primary role definedas teaChing rather than research.

The Brora Centre was set up by Mary Northwayand Dorothy A. Millichamp, to continue theacademic work and personal interests of theretiring staff of the Institute. The Centre alsoprovided facilities for the Blatz Memorial whichhad been instigated by Northway in 1965, for theNeathern Trust, set up in 1963, as well as forresearch and counselling. The Centre continueduntil 1978.

The W.E. Blatz Memorial was set up in 1965 tocontinue the interests of Blatz in child study andeducation. Six visiting lecturers came toToronto, research studies continued, and the Blatz

Era research papers and documents were preserved, largely at Northway's instigation.

She died on February 27, 1978.

During Mary Northway's last years, shecontributed much by giving interviews whichwere taped for archival purposes. Of these sheconsidered the most important to be: Experience ofa Psychologist, for the Canadian PsychologicalAssociation Archives; Life at the University ofToronto for the University Archives; and Contactswith J.L. Moreno and the Development of Sociometryin Canada, for the Moreno Institute Archives.

Northway also arranged for the placing ofvarious collections of papers in archival centres. As has been already mentioned, the Northway Familypapers and the Ontario Camping Archives are atTrent University. The Blatz Research papers,1925-1960, and the documents of the Blatz Eraincluding tape recordings of 20 of itsparticipants, and Northway's personal and academicpapers are in the Thomas Fisher Library,University of Toronto.

Always in demand as a speaker and lecturerand as a contributor to periodicals, Northwaywrote literally dozens of articles as well asmonographs on child study and camping. A twelvepage bibliography of her work may be found in Box3 of the Collection, and another copy is filed inBox 49.

Her pUblications include:The Primer of Sociometry. Toronto:University of Toronto Press, 1952.Laughter in the Front Hall. Toronto:Longmans, 1966.Sociometric Testing: A Guide for Teachers.with Lindsay Weld. Toronto: University ofToronto Press, 1957.William Emet Blatz, 1895-1964. Many of the books in the field of child study werealso translated into various languages.
