Go Motorsport Live! roars into SilverstoneMore than 50 exhibitors are now confirmed for the inaugural Go Motorsport Live! at Silverstone on Sunday 7 July, from clubs and championships to teams, manufacturers and more.

Concluding National Motorsport Week (29 June-7 July) just seven days after the Santander British Grand Prix, Go Motorsport Live! will showcase all the sport has to offer, from grassroots events to the pinnacle of international motor sport.

There will be a competition for 50 show-goers to visit the Sahara Force India Formula One Team factory just across the road from the circuit, giving winners a chance to spend time in the grand prix squad’s race bays. Mercedes AMG Petronas is also running a competition for factory tours at a later date, and the Marussia F1 Team is getting involved too by providing a show car for the Go Motorsport Live! display area.

Meanwhile Oxford Motor Club will be staging an AutoSOLO to offer passengers the chance to experience what it feels like to drive as fast as possible around a course marked out with cones. There will also be a line-up of attractions including cars from the UK’s premier Le Mans team Strakka Racing, Rob Austin’s BTCC Audi A4 and the Caterham Motor Sport Academy.

Highlighting the MSA’s ‘Year of the Volunteer’ initiative, marshalling clubs from the area will be out in force, offering advice to potential recruits as well as performing rescue demonstrations to give visitors a further insight into volunteering.

Those interested in engineering and, perhaps, a future career within the UK’s world-leading motor sport industry will also be able to watch the Formula Student Endurance Finals – run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers – that are also taking place at Silverstone that weekend.

Public admittance to Go Motorsport Live! is free but visitors need to pre-register in advance for their entry ticket. More than 1,000 people have already done so using the simple form at www.GoMotorsport.net.

Full Wales Rally GB itinerary confirmed

The full itinerary for this year’s Wales Rally GB (14-17 November) has been revealed, including details of the three new ‘RallyFest’ venues aimed at bringing one of the world’s most spectacular sports to a wider family audience.

The event will be headquartered in Deeside with a ceremonial start at Conwy Quay on Thursday evening, before finishing in Llandudno on Sunday, with a range of classic stages in between.

Crews will face special stages in darkness on Thursday: Gwydyr, Penmachno and Clocaenog, none of which has featured on the rally for more than 15 years. Friday then sees two runs through Hafren, Sweet Lamb and Myherin, either side of a remote service in Newtown.

Saturday’s stages start with two blasts through Gartheiniog and Dyfi forests. The teams then return to Deeside via another classic Welsh forest stage in Dyfnant and the first of two new spectator stages set against the dramatic backdrop of Chirk Castle.

Sunday sees second runs through Dyfnant and Clocaenog (the Power Stage) plus a visit to Penllyn near Bala, included for the first time since 1991. The route back to Llandudno features the second of the reintroduced short spectator stages, this time set in the grounds of Kinmel Park. The final stage will be the legendary Great Orme.

Kinmel Park, Friday’s Sweet Lamb and Chirk Castle on Saturday are designated special RallyFest Stages, each including a big screen, catering village, public address commentary, special displays, a Rally Dome, on-stage shows and other attractions.

Wales Rally GB partners with BTRDA

International Motor Sports (IMS), the MSA’s commercial subsidiary and organiser of Wales Rally GB (14-17 November), has announced a new partnership with the BTRDA Rally Series as part of the Road to Wales initiative.

The BTRDA championship is the most popular in UK rallying, with over 260 registered competitors this year. The crew that wins the prestigious BTRDA Gold Star will receive a free entry to Wales Rally GB’s three-day National Rally (15-17 November), while the BTRDA Rally First Championship winners will get a free entry into the two-day version (16-17 November).

Steve Gregg, BTRDA Championship Coordinator, said: “Wales Rally GB in all its previous guises was always an event that British competitors, including many who came from the BTRDA Rally Series, had on their ‘must do’ list and we hope this new partnership will encourage more to take up the challenge and support the excellent opportunity the event now provides for British competitors.”

Tyre manufacturers in agreement over rally tread patterns

Three leading tyre manufacturers have voluntarily agreed not to propose certain tread patterns for forest rally use after they were deemed too ‘aggressive’ during a meeting of the Stage Rally Tyre Working Group at Motor Sports House.

DMACK, Dunlop and Yokohama each submitted a provisional list of future gravel rally tyres but removed their respective Mud, DZ74R and A031 tyres following discussion. Hankook and Michelin were also present, while Khumo and Pirelli were unable to attend.

It was confirmed that a Forest/Gravel Rally Tyre List of accept-able tyres for UK stage rallying will be issued for guidance in the 2014 MSA Yearbook and enforced from 2015. The manufac-turers also agreed the template for a document detailing such tyres, which will help event scrutineers to check eligibility.

Mike Broad, Stage Rally Tyre Working Group chairman, said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in these meetings for the constructive discussions that are helping us to make progress. The manufacturers understand that we are working to secure the future of rallying and appreciate that this entails reducing the impact of tyres on the forest environment.

“Competitors can rest assured that we are not going to be tak-ing away any major tyres at short notice. They should check that any tyres they have in storage comply with the guidance that will be issued in the 2014 MSA Yearbook, and if not they have until the end of 2014 to use them.”

Bunting starts work at MSA

New MSA Chief Executive Nick Bunting has spent his first few weeks in the post at Motor Sports House, having taken over from his predecessor Colin Hilton on 20 May.

Bunting joined the British governing body from the Prince’s Initiative for Mature Enterprise (PRIME) where he was also Chief Executive. He previously spent 14 years at the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

“It’s a real privilege to take the helm of one of the FIA’s most respected National Sporting Authorities,” said Bunting. “During my first few weeks in the post I have been struck by the great work that the MSA is involved with both domestically and internationally.

“Arriving at the MSA from outside motor sport means that I bring a fresh perspective, as well as a knowledge and experience of other sports at the top level. I am looking forward to the challenge of building upon the MSA’s position as a world-leading ASN.”

Disqualification for Paskin

Christopher Paskin, who at the relevant time was President and Chairman of Lancaster Motor Club, has been disqualified from UK – and FIA – motor sport.

The National Court reported: ‘It is the case that Mr Paskin has organised events which have taken place without obtaining the relevant permits, without ensuring payment is made to MSA, without supplying relevant event information and documentation to the MSA and, of the particular concern, has allowed competitors to participate in events for which they were entitled to assume insurance cover would be in place for their protection where no such insurance was provided as a result of the failure to obtain the relevant permits.’

Mr Paskin was neither present nor represented at the National Court hearing, despite receiving and acknowledging notice of the cases. In his absence, the penalty of disqualification was imposed under MSA General Regulation C.2.7.

Entries open for club & volunteer awards

The JLT MSA Marshal of the Year Award has been rebranded as the JLT MSA Volunteer of the Year Awards to make all of the sport’s volunteers eligible, in recognition of 2013 being designated the MSA Year of the Volunteer.

Commemorative awards will be presented at next January’s MSA Night of Champions in each of the following categories:

•Steward / Clerk of the Course• Technical Official (Scrutineer, Timekeeper etc)•Marshal•Medical / Rescue / Recovery / Safety•Other (please specify).

The individual judged to be the best overall across all categories will be declared the JLT MSA Volunteer Official of the Year, winning £250 and a silver pewter salver.

Similarly the judging panel for the 2013 JLT MSA Club of the Year Award will take particular interest in clubs’ engagement with MSA Year of the Volunteer celebrations or initiatives. The winning club will receive £1000 and a trophy at the Night of Champions.

MSA/ARDS statement on coaching

The MSA is working closely with ARDS (Racing), ARKS (Karting), BARS (Rallying) and AHASS (Sprints and Hill Climbs) to develop a recognised coaching structure for motor sport. This is an important development in raising standards and will bring motor sport in line with other sports and activities.

These coaching qualifications will complement, not replace, the ARDS Instructor licence. In recognition of their previous experience, existing instructors will be granted ‘Grandparent’ rights which will allow them to go straight onto the Level 2 course.

The first courses are expected to run towards the end of 2013, beginning with Level 2 which will be split into two options: ‘Participation’ – predominantly for those instructors working in schools – and ‘Performance’ – for those working with drivers on longer-term development. Further awards at Levels 1, 3 and 4 will follow in due course.

JYS visits South Mids marshals

Triple F1 world champion Sir Jackie Stewart paid a visit to the British Motorsport Marshals Club’s South Mids Region club night at the White Horse in Silverstone last month.

Sir Jackie is the latest in a long line of distinguished guests, who include the likes of Christian Horner, Martin Brundle, John Watson, Lord Drayson, Andy Priaulx, Anthony Davidson, Allan McNish, Andy Wallace and David Richards.

George Copeland, the BMMC’s National Treasurer, said: “Sir Jackie was in great form and seemed to respond especially well to an audience of well-informed and knowledgeable marshals. He was very relaxed and posed for photographs with the Landlord and his wife, which I am sure will win pride of place above the bar for some time to come – as will the photo of Sir Jackie pulling a pint behind the bar and offering his services for busy weekends!”

York MC celebrates 110 years

York Motor Club will celebrate its 110th active year with a display of competition and classic cars at the York Auction Centre on 14 July.

Formed in 1903 York MC went on to run the York National Rally, while today its members compete in a variety of

disciplines such as circuit racing, rallying, sprints, autotests and trials.

The anniversary event is open to public with free entry, although the club is encouraging donations to Air Ambulance.

Best of British rallying set for Cholmondeley Pageant of Power

The Cholmondeley Pageant of Power will play host to a packed schedule of on-track action featuring British rally drivers such as MSA Team UK’s Elfyn Evans.

Evans, the reigning FIA WRC Academy champion, will take to the course in his Qatar M-Sport Ford Fiesta R5. Other British stars lined up for the event include MSA British Rally Championship frontrunner Tom Cave.

Additionally over 20 drivers will go head-to-head in Group B cars such as the Audi Sport Quattro, Audi Quattro A1 and a Peugeot 205 T16, with ex-Peugeot works driver Kevin Furber behind the wheel. Meanwhile in the Pageant’s Rally Village visitors will be able to see the likes of Colin McRae’s 1996 WRC Subaru Impreza and his 1999 Safari-winning Ford Focus, plus Jari-Matti Latvala’s 2010 Ford Focus and Mikko Hirvonen’s 2010 Monte Carlo-winning Ford Fiesta S2000.

James Hall, Event Director, said: “The rally display is going to be one of the highlights of the event and we’re really excited to be hosting some of the greatest cars and drivers from all eras of the sport. Out on track, visitors will be able to witness some of the fastest, most versatile racing machines in the world, while the new Rally Village will showcase some of the most successful and iconic vehicles from the rallying history books.”

FFord & Ginetta racers get PMCs

MSA Performance Managers James Wozencroft and Andy Meyrick delivered Performance Master Classes to Formula Ford and Ginetta Junior drivers at Oulton Park recently.

The workshops run were: Driving 101 (technical and tactical); and The Inside Line (motor sport psychology).

“We had a good turnout of young drivers keen to learn how to better themselves,” said Wozencroft. “After so many years when the dominant theory was that driving talent was all that mattered, it’s great to see that today’s young drivers understand the level of dedication, commitment and all-round professionalism required to make it in the world of top-level motor sport.”

O-C rides shotgun with Donnelly

MSA British Rally Championship frontrunner Mark Donnelly gave his MSA Team UK Performance Manager and BTCC racer Tom Onslow-Cole a ride in a Citroen DS3 R2 rally car during shakedown for the Jim Clark Rally.

“It was great to experience rallying for the first time, but more importantly it was really useful to get first-hand experience of Mark’s ability behind the wheel and to see how he works with his team,” said Onslow-Cole, who was joined by fellow Performance Manager James Wozencroft, a former British Super 1600 Rally Champion.

TECHNICAL / REGULATIONS

Stand 21 FHR clarification

The MSA Technical Department wishes to clear up any confusion regarding guidance recently issued about a particular Stand 21 Frontal Head Restraint (see MSA News,

April 2013 page 7, and May 2013 page 8).

To clarify once more, the only Stand 21 HANS device affected is the STAND 21 HANS® CLUB SERIES in the LARGE SIZE, with the FIA homologation number FHR.036.12-A. Any FHR with a different model name, size or FIA homologation number is in no way affected.

FIA Homologated seats

Competitors are reminded that modifying a competition seat automatically voids its homologation. For example, the MSA Technical Department has seen a case where the flange sections of a seat have been cut away to allow clearance for a door bar. This not only voids the seat’s FIA homologation but can also compromise the structural integrity of the seat because the flange contributes significantly to the structure’s strength.

Regulations for consultation

The latest regulation changes proposed by the Rallies, Kart and Executive Committees are available for consultation at www.msauk.org/regulations. The email addresses and closing dates for feedback are specified in the action sheets detailing the proposed changes.

AASE applications to open shortly

Applications will soon open for the fifth intake of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) in Motor Sport.

AASE is a government-funded programme designed to help talented athletes aged 16 to 18 to achieve their full potential, and forms part of the MSA Academy talent development pathway. Beginning in August each year, it is essentially a sports science course for motor sport, focusing on all of the human performance elements that combine to create successful drivers.

“Any aspiring young driver who is serious about competing at the highest level should make every effort to join AASE,” said Greg Symes, MSA Academy Coordinator. “The course content is delivered by expert tutors at Loughborough College and state-of-the-art motor sport facilities such as the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone. Meanwhile the programme is bolstered by a number of qualified coaches, who support the apprentices with their development both in and out of the car.”

Joint session for Squad and AASEMSA Academy Squad and AASE drivers headed to Silverstone’s Porsche Performance Centre earlier this week (11 June) for a two-part training session overseen by MSA Performance Consultant David Brabham.

The morning was spent learning about communications, brands, sponsorship and selling with motor sport marketing expert Brian Cameron. Cameron also led an Insights Discovery workshop, which focuses on personality profiling to help individuals understand themselves and others better.

The Porsche Performance Centre’s Gerard Grey spent the afternoon leading particular and educational activities about injury prevention.

Brabham said: “Being able to sell yourself in the commercial environment of modern motor sport is a vital skill for any young driver seeking to make a name for themselves and climb the career ladder, so Brian’s expertise was very well received. And of course any injury during training

or competition can hold back an athlete, which is particularly detrimental in a sport such as ours where success is measured by fractions of seconds. Gerard’s advice should therefore prove invaluable for the Squad and AASE members, who all gave positive feedback at the end of the day.”

Go Motorsport at the Jim Clark Rally

Scotland RDO Alison Clark manned a Go Motorsport stand at last month’s Jim Clark Rally.

The three-day event, comprising five rallies, provided an ideal opportunity for Clark to meet motor sport enthusiasts and distribute information about how to get started.

Clark was also accompanied by Marshal, the motor sport volunteer (see @ThanksMarshal, pages 16-19). “Never one to miss a pose, Marshal was photographed with the glitterati including the Rt Hon Michael Moore, Secretary of State for Scotland, and veteran commentators John Horton and Bob Milloy, whom he also accompanied down the kids’ slide!” said Clark.

RDO Moore encourages college students

A number of students at South Devon College are set to join their local motor club following presentations by South West RDO Kevin Moore.

“The student groups covered various age ranges, including younger non-drivers who were interested to learn about disciplines of motor sport that they were not even aware of,” said Moore.

“Meanwhile the older groups were particularly interested in career path options, the activities of the local motor clubs and the benefits of membership.”

RDOs convene at Donington

Go Motorsport’s Regional Development Officers (RDOs) gathered at Donington Park this month for a mid-season review, to discuss plans for the year ahead and develop their toolkit for school visits.

There are 10 RDOs across the UK, working with clubs, associations and venues to promote and develop motor sport in their areas, while also delivering the Go Motorsport message in schools and colleges. Seven of the 10 made it to Donington, where they were joined by Ben Taylor, MSA Director of Development & Communications, and Jess Fack, MSA Development Officer.

In the morning, the RDOs were introduced to new educational materials that have been developed by the MSA in association with Racing Steps Foundation. The Grid provides all the content for teachers to cover the important subject of Risk Management, taking the lessons from

motor sport and relating the principles back to the everyday lives of the pupils.

The afternoon was spent sharing experiences and ideas from around the country, as well as discussing plans for National Motorsport Week.

Taylor said: “Getting the RDOs together provides a great opportunity to share thoughts, ideas and experiences to help develop club motor sport. It is clear that the challenges faced are different in each part of the country, but there are some common themes that we can explore. It was exciting to demonstrate the risk management educational materials for the first time; this is a great project that further demonstrates the positive and constructive role that motor sport can play in society. We need to make more people aware of the good work that motor sport can do.”

Suze Endean appointed South East RDO

The MSA has appointed Suze Endean as Go Motorsport’s new Regional Development Officer (RDO) in the South East of England.

Along with her nine fellow RDOs, Endean will work hand-in-hand with clubs, associations and venues to promote and develop motor sport in her area, while also delivering the Go Motorsport message in schools and colleges.

Endean is an active competitor, marshal and organiser who currently works for Prodrive Composites in Milton Keynes. She is a media officer and committee member of both Chelmsford and Oxford Motor Clubs, and is also Press & Publicity Officer for the Brands Hatch Summer and Winter Stages rallies.

“I’m excited to become part of the Go Motorsport team and am looking forward to working with motor clubs and schools in the area,” said Endean. “As somebody who really enjoys motor sport from a number of angles, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to introduce others to the sport and help clubs to develop and diversify.”

Volunteer

Get to the heart of the action!

Marshalling

Marshals are there to make sure that events are run safely and effectively. Duties range from displaying flag signals and clearing debris to providing communication cover as well as running a start, finish line or assembly area.

Scrutineering

Scrutineers check that cars comply with the technical regulations to ensure safety and fair play. While experience in engineering or a similar technical field is usually an advantage, it is not essential.

Rescuing and recovering

Rescue personnel provide immediate medical and extrication facilities at the scene of an incident, while Recovery personnel retrieve stricken cars. Both crews use the latest medical or recovery equipment.

Timekeeping

Timekeepers record competitors’ times and positions in order to determine the event results. Tools range from hand-held stopwatches to electronic timing systems that can measure to the nearest thousandth of a second.

Officiating

Once you’ve gained some experience in one or more of the above roles you can consider becoming a Steward, Secretary of the Meeting or Clerk of Course, who are responsible for ensuring that events are run in accordance with sporting regulations.

Club volunteer

Try…ScrutineeringEach month during the Year of the Volunteer we will be focusing on a particular volunteering role. This month we take a look at the role of the scrutineer

Motor sport runs to a set of general and supplementary regulations laid down by the MSA and event or championship organisers, in order to ensure fair play and safe competition. However, regulations mean little if they are not properly enforced, so scrutineers play a vital role in checking that cars and equipment comply. But what exactly does the role entail, how can you get started and where can it lead to?

John Cooper has been involved in motor sport since the age of 14 and first became a trainee scrutineer in 1986. He is the eligibility scrutineer for the BTRDA Gravel Championship, the Roger Albert Clark Rally Championship and the Association of South Western Motor Clubs.

“I travelled a lot in the early days as a trainee scrutineer, which is what you need to do; you need to get out and about

“Scrutineering is all about making sure that competition cars comply with the technical regulations in order to ensure fair and safe play. It’s also about problem solving, and I like the challenge of using my knowledge and experience to take a competitor from a position of being ineligible to compete to being eligible again. To most problems there is a solution, and it’s been a long time since I turned a competitor away because their car simply couldn’t be made eligible for the event.

“On-event it can be an early start for the scrutineering team, which could be as few as two people and as many as nine or so. To start off with we liaise with the Clerk of the Course and the Secretary, we make sure we know who the MSA Steward is, and we make sure we know which section of the technical regulations we’re working to.

“When it comes to actually inspecting a vehicle, I tend to start at the engine bay and walk around the car via the driver’s side looking at things like harnesses, seats, fire extinguishers, the roll cage and floor. We also check helmets and overalls, as well as HANS devices when required, and we look at MOT certificates, registration documents and Competition Car Log Books (CCLBs).

“You get out of scrutineering what you put in. I scrutineer as far north as Yorkshire and Scotland, and I live in Cornwall! But if you’re willing to put in the hard yards the rewards are that you can get yourself out and about and maybe even see the world; scrutineering has taken me as far as Kenya, where I was Chief Scrutineer on the Classic Safari Rally. I’ve also seen most of Europe through scrutineering. It’s hard work, there’s no doubt about it, but it really is good fun.”

Keith Auld started scrutineering at Snetterton in the mid-1970s. He is currently the Eligibility Scrutineer for the Renault Clio Cup and Chief Scrutineer for BARC.

“The satisfaction that I get from scrutineering comes from helping to make sure that everybody has a chance to enjoy their motor sport not just safely but on a fair and level playing field by checking that their cars meet the rules.

“You don’t have to be a mechanic to become a scrutineer. You just need to have an interest in motor sport and cars and a basic knowledge about how they work. The rest of the required knowledge comes from training and building up experience over

time. That’s not just limited to the actual task of scrutineering; you’ve also got to know what the Clerk of the Course does, what the Stewards do, what the Rescue and Recovery Crews do, and you’ve got to have knowledge of the MSA’s Blue Book.

“Scrutineering has taken me as far afield as Asia. I’ve scrutineered GTs, Formula Renaults,Formula BMWs and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in places like China and Japan, having been invited out there by championship organisers. One of my best ever experiences was scrutineering the first race meeting in Dubai for the World Touring Car Championship and the FIA GT1 event. Motor sport communities around the world recognise the ability of scrutineers in the UK, and they want to tap into that experience to make sure that things are done correctly. That’s one of the perks of the job for a good and experienced British scrutineer.

“The best way to get started in scrutineering is to join your local motor club, where you’ll meet existing volunteers and find out all about what’s involved. Then you need to apply to the MSA for your trainee licence using the form on the www.msauk.org website, after which you can get in touch with a mentor in your area. That person will take you to your first meetings and events, so you don’t have to worry about being thrown in at the deep end or being expected to find your feet by yourself. You’ll also have to complete the MSA’s training module, but from there the sky’s the limit, so long as you’re willing to put the effort in.”
