The UltraSonic EX-5 Gas Leak Detectorresponds to the ultrasound generated fromgas releases in open, well-ventilated areas, where traditional methods of detectionmay be unsuitable or dependent onventilation. Because the UltraSonic EX-5Detector responds to the source of a gasrelease rather than the dispersed gas, it isunaffected by changing wind directions, gas dilution, and the direction of the gasleak. With its wide coverage radius, a singleunit can monitor a relatively large area.

The UltraSonic EX-5 Detector is immune tomany false signals and can be configured tofilter short timescale ultrasonic noise thatcan produce nuisance alarms. Frequenciesbelow 25 kHz are removed by a high passfilter, effectively eliminating interferencefrom audible and low frequency ultrasonicnoise. At the same time, setting the alarmtrigger level above the ultrasonicbackground noise ensures immunity toother noise sources. The result is a reliablemethod of detection, able to monitorenvironments with high levels of ultrasoundsuch as turbine rooms and compressorstations.

The UltraSonic EX-5Detector also featuresthe Senssonic™ patented self-test for fullfailsafe operation. This self-test checks theelectrical integrity of the device andmicrophone every 15 minutes and ensuresthat the detector is operational at all times. In addition to a 4-20 mA output, theUltraSonic EX-5 Detector is available withModBus or HART to enable assetmanagement and process improvement.

Features• Advanced high precision stainless steel

microphone enables instant detection ofpressurized gas leaks

• Senssonic™ integrated acoustic self-testprovides full failsafe operation

• HART and ModBus communicationoptions provide complete status andcontrol capability in the control room

• Stainless steel 316L explosion-proofhousing for corrosion resistance in harsh environments

• One-person check and calibration withtraceable portable test unit delivers highreliability and trouble-free maintenance

• Three-digit LED display shows actualsound pressure level and alarm indication

• Event logging stores fault, sound check, calibration, and alarm event history(requires HART communication)

Chillgard® RT Photoacoustic Infrared Refrigerant Monitor The industry stadard for refrigerant leak detection monitors

The Chillgard RT Photoacoustic InfraredRefrigerant Monitor provides economical, low-level monitoring of refrigerant gases used in mostrefriger-ation systems or chillers. By detectingleaks early enough to prevent a major loss ofrefrigerant gas, the monitor reduces operatingcosts. Chillagrd RT Monitors meet therequirements of ANSI/ASHRAE 15.

Sensor TechnologyThe Chillgard RT Monitor utilizes very stable andhighly selective photoacoustic infrared (IR)technology to sense refrigerant gases at levels aslow as 1 part-per million.• Can operate for months with virtually

no zero drift• Inherent stability eliminates the need for auto-

zeroing techniques that take the monitor “off-line” at regular intervals, leaving the area unprotected

• “Fresh air” sampling line or “on-line” scrubber isnot required

• High immunity to interferents such as cleaningagents and solvents

• Unaffected by changes in humidity• Operates over a wide temperature range• Detects single or multiple refrigerants

ExpandabilitySimply by adding the Multipoint Sequencer, the Chillgard RT Refrigerant Monitor can be expanded to monitor up to 8 locations,resulting in:• More cost-effective monitoring, especially when

monitoring large areas or multiple locations orchillers

• The fastest possible response to any leak or spill• Fresh sample pumped from locations up to

500 feet for each sample

Simplicity/ Ease of Use• Easy to install, operate and maintain. Four front-

panel keys configure the entire system.• Front panel displays all alarm and trouble

messages. If a trouble condition occurs, themessage is clearly shown on the display and thetype of trouble is indicated.

• 2-line x 20-character vacuum fluorescent displayshows alarm indications, monitored locationand actual gas concentration

• Three alarm levels with relay outputs for each level

• Password protection

Instrument Calibration

Whether an instrument warns and/ oralarms at the proper time depends on itsability to translate the quantity of gas itdetects into an accurate reading.“Calibration” refers to an instrument’smeasurement accuracy relative to a knownconcentration of gas. Gas detectorsperform relative measurements: ratherthan independently assessing the quantityof gas present, they measure theconcentration of the air sample and thencompare it to the known concentration ofthe gas that the instrument is configured tosample. This “known concentration” servesas the instrument’s measurement scale, orreference point.

If the instrument’s reference point hasmoved, then its reading will also move. Thisis called “calibration drift” and it happens tomost instruments over time. (Commoncauses of calibration drift include thenormal degradation of sensors, exposure ofthe sensor to poisons, and harsh operatingconditions.)

When an instrument experiencescalibration drift it can still measure thequantity of gas present, but it cannotconvert it into an accurate numericalreading. Regular calibration with a certifiedstandard gas concentration updates theinstrument’s reference point, re-enabling itto produce accurate readings.

There are two methods of verifyinginstrument calibration: through afunctional or “bump” test (or span check) or by performing a full calibration. Each isappropriate under certain conditions.

Bump (or Span) CheckA bump check is a means of verifyingcalibration by exposing the instrument to aknown concentration of test gas. Theinstrument reading is then compared tothe actual quantity of gas present (asindicated on the cylinder). If theinstrument’s response is within anacceptable range of the actualconcentration then its calibration isverified. When performing a bump test, thetest gas concentration should be highenough to trigger the instrument alarm. Ifthe bump test results are not within theacceptable range, then a full calibrationmust be performed.

Full CalibrationA full calibration is the adjustment of theinstrument’s reading to coincide withknown concentrations (generally a certifiedstandard) of zero and span gases, tocompensate for calibration drift. In mostcases, a full calibration is only necessarywhen an instrument does not pass thebump test (or after it has been serviced).

Zero CheckA zero check is performed to verify that theinstrument reads true zero (also referred toas the “baseline”) in an environment inwhich no amount of target gas is present.Common situations in which a zero check isperformed include:• after exposure of the sensor to a sensor

contaminant• after the sensor has been exposed to a

very high concentration of the target gas

• as the sensor ages, since it may gradually drift

• after the unit has operated in varyingbackground conditions (e.g. humiditylevels)

• after exposure to extreme conditions (e.g. high temperature or humidity)

If the instrument fails the zero check, then a zero adjustment—which sets

the instrument to true zero—should be performed.

Frequency of CalibrationThe frequency of calibration depends onthe sensor’s operating time, conditions ofuse (including chemical exposure) and user experience with the instrument. Newsensors should be calibrated more oftenuntil the calibration records prove sensorstability. The calibration frequency canthen be reduced to the schedule set by the safety officer or plant manager. Beforecalibrating the sensors, it is good practiceto apply power to the unit to allow thesensor to adapt to the new environment.Sensors should be powered at least one full hour before any calibration attempt is made.

Product Guide

MSA Guide to Gas Sensor Selection and PlacementIn general, when placing sensors the followingprinciples should be considered:

• Place sensors in areas where the air currentsare likely to produce the highest gasconcentration, including areas where gasbuildup is likely, such as corners or stoppingpoints of moving devices that release gas.

• If you are attempting to take a representativeroom sample, do not place sensors nearentrances or fresh air vents (because thesample concentration will be diluted byincoming air) unless there is a need tosample that specific area of the room.

• Place sensors close to the possible gas/leaksource.

• Place combustible gas sensors between thepotential leak and the ignition source.

• Place toxic gas and oxygen sensors betweenthe potential leak and the populated area, and in the workers’ breathing zone.

• Consider ease of access to the sensor formaintenance requirements, such as periodiccalibration. Use a remote sensor for high orinaccessible locations.

• Avoid mounting sensors near radiotransmitters or other RFI-producing sources(e.g., welding activity and induction heaters),to reduce possible RF interference.

• Avoid locations where airborne particles maycoat or contaminate the sensor, such as paintbooths.

• Install sensors in a position that preventswater or dust accumulation on the sensorhead (which may impede the diffusion of gas into the sensor). The preferred position isfacing downward, but horizontal placementis also acceptable.

• Facility air intakes are generally goodlocations for sensors.

• Ensure that the entire area in question issufficiently monitored, including little-usedareas such as closets, warehouses and otherstorage areas.

• Factor in the vapor density of the monitoredgases when compared to air.

M S A C u s t o m e r S e r v i c e 1 - 8 0 0 - M S A - I N S T • w w w . M S A n e t . c o m

STEP 1: To determine where toplace sensors, perform an analysisof the potential gas hazards in yourfacility.

STEP 2: Create drawings indicatingall potential leak sites, as well as theseverity of each site’s hazardpotential.

There are two main categories ofhazardous locations:

A. Potential gas discharge points. These are places wherehazardous gases may bereleased, such as valve stemseals, gaskets, compressionfittings and expansion joints.

B. Potential contact areas. Theseare places where hazardousgases may endanger workers,or damage equipment orproperty. Examples includepopulated areas, confinedspaces, pits, stairwells, crawlspaces, shelters, andresidential, business andindustrial environmentslocated nearby.

STEP 3: Since gases do not alwaysbehave in the same way, take airflow conditions, as well as potentialgas pockets, into considerationbefore placing sensors. MSA smoketubes (P/N 458481) can be useful inmeasuring the direction and rate ofair flow to determine areas wheregases may accumulate.

Product Guide

Combustible Gas Sensors• Hydrogen and methane are lighter than

air, so place sensors near the ceiling, and in ceiling corners where pockets of air may collect.

• For electric motor monitoring, placesensors near the ignition source.

• Gasoline is heavier than air, so place sensorsnear—but not directly on—the floor.

• When monitoring multiple combustiblegases, calibrate the instrument for the leastsensitive gas.

Toxic & Oxygen Gas Sensors• Place carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide

sensors for indoor air quality monitoringnear air intake ducts.

• In general, in occupied areas (e.g., confinedspaces) monitor for oxygen and toxic gasesin the workers’ breathing zone (4-6 ft.). Thiswill vary, depending on whether thedensity of the gas is heavier, the same as, orlighter than, air or oxygen.

Toxic & Combustible Sensors• Place sensors near the potential release

source for process monitoring applications(e.g., pipelines, valves).

• Gas cylinder storage areas: If they areventilated, place sensors near the return airvent.

• Acid/ solvent drum storage areas: Thesegases are heavier than air (e.g., heavyhydrocarbons) so place sensors close to theground and in corners where air maycollect in pockets.

• If the hazard is outside, place sensors nearthe air intake for both combustible andtoxic gas monitoring; if the hazard is inside, place sensors near the exhaust.

• Some gases may collect in pockets in roomcorners, at both floor and ceiling levels.Place sensors in these areas if necessary.

Refrigerant Monitor Placement• ASHRAE 15 states that a refrigerant monitor

capable of detecting the TLV for arefrigerant gas must be installed in amechanical equipment room.

• Place the end of the sample line in thelocation most likely to develop a refrigerantgas leak or spill. Such areas include valves, fittings and the chiller itself. Also, monitorany refrigerant storage location. It is goodpractice to keep all sampling lines as shortas possible when an aspirated or pumpedsampling system is used.

• Since most refrigerant gases are heavier thanair, monitor these gases close to the floor.Any pits, stairwells or trenches are likely to fillwith refrigerant gas before the main area. Itmay be necessary to monitor these locationsfor refrigerant gas.

• If ventilation exists in the chiller room, MSAsmoke tubes (P/N 458481) will help todetermine the most appropriate gasmonitoring locations.

• Monitor displays can be placed just outsidethe doorway of the monitored area, enabling personnel to check the statusbefore entering the area.

• ASHRAE Standard 147P states thefollowing:4.8 Refrigerant Monitor. On largerefrigerating systems for which arefrigerant monitor is required per ASHRAE15, a refrigerant monitor capable ofdetecting refrigerant concentrations of 1ppm by volume or less shall be used toprovide early warning of leaks.
