PHOTONICS RESEARCH GROUP 2
Why study photonics?
Photonics is now widely recognized as a major innovation enabling discipline for the 21st century.
It can be defined as the field of science and technology where the fundamental properties of light and its interaction with matter are studied and applied.
Since several decades photonics has been penetrating in ever more applications and household appliances, sectors such as tele- and datacom, display and camera industry, biotechnology, solar energy, medical instrumentation, laser material processing, etc.
PHOTONICS RESEARCH GROUP 3
Why study photonics?
SPIE asked leaders in the optics and photonics community to give some advice to students interested in the field.
Astronomers, professors, CEOs, a Nobel Prize winner, and others all give their answer to the question,
"What advice would you give to a student or young professional interested in optics and/or photonics?"
This is a small collection of their responses:

What is the opinion of the alumni?
“The level of the courses is high. After completing the program I feel prepared to be a
researcher and for the job market.”
Alumnus Pierre Wahl, Stanford University PhD-student
“The MSc. in Photonics at UGent has an excellent combination of courses and laboratory
work which cover all the core aspects of photonics and almost all important subfields.”
Alumnus Abdul Shakoor, St Andrews University PhD-student
“Besides the fact that the courses prepare the students for both an academic career as a
career in Photonics industry, the greatest asset gained was the growth of my professional
network. The professors recognize that success in industry relies just as much on who you
know, as what you know.”
Alumnus Aaron Kaplan, Luna Innovations Regional Sales Engineer, USA
“Surprisingly for me, the researchers, who are writing the science right now, were my
professors. This is surely one of the best options for any photonics aspirant...”
Alumnus Alvaro Casas Bedoya, Sydney University PhD-student
