MISSION STATEMENT Our mission, as rooted in our baptismal call, is to live and

share the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the fullness of our Catholic Church.

Fr. Timothy Akanson Parochial Vicar

Daily Scripture Readings ~ are available on our web site, on the parish information page,

www.sjbsummerville.org at Franciscanmedia.org, and also at usccb.org.

PARISH MEMBERSHIP Active members of our parish are identified by their

generosity of time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is determined by:

1.) Being properly registered and active for at least three months; 2.) Faithful participation at weekly liturgies; 3.) Regular and identifiable support of the parish; 4.) Involvement in at least one parish ministry, program, activity or organization. These criteria are used to verify parishioner status for: sponsorship; parochial schools; participation in sacramen-tal, educational, pastoral and social ministries, activities and enrichment programs; and use of facilities and services.

** AFTER HOURS **

Please call the office number for staff referrals.

Televised Sunday Mass ~ On ABC family station Sunday mornings from 6:30—7:00. Info at: www.TheSundayMass

General Information

SVdP ~ The direct Helpline Number for St. Vincent de Paul Society is 843-224-4592. The parish office no longer channels these requests

Baptism ~ The next parental prep session will be held at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, January 8th, in the Church Commons. After attending this session, Bap-tisms may be scheduled during a daily or weekend Mass, as well as outside of Mass at 11am or 7pm on Saturday, or 1pm on Sunday. Please register for the session by contacting the parish office. Godparents and grandparents are also welcome. Avoid the need for a babysitter, plan to attend while still pregnant!

Marriage ~ Engaged couples should contact Deacon Jim Walter at [email protected] to set an appointment to begin the process of preparation at least six months prior to the date of marriage.

Miraculous Medal Novena ~ Mondays at 9:45am.

Rosary ~ Thursdays at 9:45 am in Our Lady’s Chapel. 0

Anointing of the Sick and Pastoral Visitation ~ To arrange for a priest, deacon or lay minister to visit a loved one who is sick, homebound, or hospitalized, please contact the parish office. Because of HIPAA policies, a hospital cannot notify the church, so a family member must take the initiative. Anointing is also offered following Mass. Because of the priest shortage, an immediate response is not always possible, so don’t wait until a crisis!

Cancer Support Group ~ The cancer support group meets the first Friday of each month at 9:30 am. Sessions are open to all. Contact Sister Carol.

RCIA Inquiry ~ Session will meet on Tuesday, January 14, at 7:00pm in the Church Commons. Anyone who has questions about the Catholic Church is welcome to attend. Contact Sr. Carol for details.

EPIPHANY HOUSE BLESSING PARISH NEWS

Jesus, the Messianic King, Part 2 This Bible Study will begin on Thursday, January 9th either at 10:00 AM in Madden Hall or at 7:00 PM in the Rectory Conference Room. Books cost $13.00. Please register with Sr. Carol at [email protected].

Scripture Study for Moms A Marian Bible Study entitled, “Bringing Scripture to Life for Moms," will begin on Thursday, January 23, from 6:30 - 8pm and continue for the next 11 weeks through 4/10/14. The author, Laura Marie Wells, will be signing copies of her book. This is wonderful opportunity for mothers to join in faith and community as we follow the

path of our Blessed Mother in the most fundamental ways of saying “YES” to God’s call. Childcare will be provided. For details, or to register, please contact Deb Schmitz at [email protected].

Catechist Opportunities

We are in need of adult and teen leaders and helpers for Children’s Liturgy of the Word and for the Early Childhood Program during the 9:30 or 11:30am Sunday Masses. In-spired by the innocence, insights and enthusiasm of little children, volunteers can truly experience a personal renewal of faith in their own hearts. For details, please contact our Director of Faith Formation, Jan Antor, at 636-248-6460 or at [email protected].

New Book Reflection Beginning on Wednesday, January 8th at 10:00 AM there will be a new book study which will be held in the church Commons. The book, By Way of Grace, is Paula Huston's account of what she learned during her strug-gle to grow in faith and to accept God's grace. The cost is $20. To register, please contact Sr. Carol at [email protected].

Welcome! Father Timothy!

Please extend a warm wel-come to Fr. Timothy Akanson, our new Parochial Vicar, who comes to us from the Archdio-cese of Tamale, Ghana. Please open your hearts and homes to him with true Southern Chris-tian Hospitality!

I n many cultures, it is customary to invoke blessings upon one’s

home on the Feast of the Epipha-ny. We invite the members of each parish household to offer this special prayer of blessing today for you and for your loved ones:

May God's peace be in this home and in the hearts of all who dwell within!

"Magi from the East came to Bethlehem

to adore the Lord; and opening their treasure chests,

they presented Him with precious gifts: gold for a great King,

incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial."

Casper, Melchior and Balthassar

are the traditional names given to the Magi. Trace their initials on the lintel of the main entrance:

20 + C + M + B + 14

"Like the Magi, may we come before You, O Lord, in reverence and awe, offering to Your honor and glory, the gift of our life." "Sacred is the threshold of our home, and holy is this door! This is the meeting place of friends, neighbors, and strangers. May it be a bridge for our comings and goings. Whenever we stand within its sacred space, may our eyes be granted new vision, so that we can recognize the presence of Christ in everyone we greet.” "Lord, may this house be a dwelling of your peace and may your love radiate through its walls. Let our home be the shelter of health, purity and self-control. May we always cherish your precious gifts of charity, humility, goodness, mildness, patience and understanding as we share our lives together and grow in the spirit of your love.” “Dear Lord, may we seek to faithfully live in accord with your covenant that your promises be fulfilled in our midst. We ask this is the name of Your Son Jesus Christ who is Emmanuel, God-with-us, now and forever. Amen!”

A NEW YEAR IS UPON US !

WOMEN'S CLUB St. John the Beloved Wom-en's Club will meet January 6, 7pm, in Madden Hall. Officers for 2014 will be installed. Items to be discussed are the Valentine Bingo Party, the Wine Tasting Event, and starting a Prayer Shawl Minis-try. Members are reminded that annual dues of $15 are payable in January. The Wom-en's Club cordially invites all women of the parish to attend our meetings.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL COLLECTION The St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) is a Catholic lay organization that helps wom-en and men grow in their spiritual aware-ness of the Church’s Social Outreach prin-ciples and Gospel mandates by offering person-to-person service to those who are suffering and in serious need.

Through your generous ongoing support you enable them to assist families by providing food and financial assistance for utility and rent bills, etc. Please make checks payable to St. Vincent de Paul. You can contribute at any time.

We extend a very special thanks to Cynthia McLaughlin and the Liturgical Arts team

for the gorgeous holiday environment and for all the dedication and hard work

they offer to help our Church look so beautiful for every season.

We also thank those who generously contribute the funds for these decorations.

SPECIAL THANKS TO PARISH ELVES !

PARISH SUPPORT OPTIONS In addition to traditional Envelopes

Online Giving allows parishioners to set-up a schedule of automatic contributions through electronic drafts from check-ing or saving accounts as well as credit cards. The parish office can assist you with the online set up or completely manage the set up if you would like automatic withdrawals but are not fa-miliar with the process. If you are 70 ½ years or older you must take a Required Mini-mum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA account. If you are con-cerned about additional income taxes you will be facing due to this distribution, an IRA charitable rollover gift to St. John The Beloved may be the answer. Speak with the administrator of your IRA Account or tax advisor on how you can take advantage of this IRS provision. Transferring stocks to St. John the Beloved can be a tax efficient way to fund your support of the parish. By transferring appreciated stock to St. John the Beloved instead of donating cash, you can take a charitable deduction for the current value of the stock without paying taxes on any of its appreciation during the period of your ownership. The process is simple, contact the parish office at 873-0631 for transfer instructions.
