The Mankato Handball Experience October 29-30, 2010

Mankato YMCA, Mankato, MN The Mankato Handball Experience was a great success again this year. The tournament committee would like to thank all the out of town players for making this event as good as it can be. Court space was precious, but the tournament was completed by early evening on Saturday. Even with 56 competitors in five full brackets, it was remarkable that the court times really never got behind. We came close to a new record at Jake’s Stadium Pizza on Friday night, but fell a couple of pies short. Next year, might be our year?! The tournament committee would like to thank all of the corporate sponsors, those who sponsored collegiate players into the tournament, and the Mankato YMCA. This was our best tournament yet. Ryan Maloney improved on his consolation championship from last year and out lasted iron man, Mike Gustafson in the open final. Mike played six matches in 24 hours. Now that’s A LOT OF HANDBALL!! Others receiving the iron man award for singles and doubles were John Ayers, George Langhorst, and Alva Rankin.

The 90+ doubles, where the ages of the team members must add to at least 90, came down to an 11-10 tiebreaker for the second straight year. This year, Mike and Arne Wells came out on the top end after dropping the tiebreaker in 2009. The semi-finals both went tiebreaker, as there was not much difference between the top four teams. The separation may have been that John Ayers and Mike Gustafson played both ways. The A bracket consisted of a mix of up and coming players: some currently in college, some recent alumni, and a couple of youngsters. The gallery was very impressed with the quickness and power of Iowa State’s, Ryan Pesch. He was able to outlast high school senior, Mike Miller, in two games. I know the coaches from Minnesota State and the University of Minnesota are hoping that Mike decides to stay in state and play handball when he goes to college next year. The Masters division was the lifeblood of this tournament. Multiple times veteran players were seen encouraging and offering sage advice to the players new to handball. “Don’t be discouraged” “Work on your off-hand” or an anecdote about one of their own tournament experiences were shared. We hope next year we have even more veteran players attend. The new players really enjoyed their help. Unfatigable John Nakasone took care of Alva Rankin in two games in the final. The B/C bracket was full of new players from Minnesota State. After the first round, winners entered the B and losers went to C bracket. The only player with less than one year of experience to advance to the B bracket was Rodney Piepho. Teenager, David Miller, impressed the gallery with his left hand shot selection and got 20 off of eventual B champion, John Laliberti. John indicated he has been logging a lot of court time over the last year and it shows. He bested MSU alum, Drew Engelmeyer in two very close games in the final. We look forward to John

competing in the Open/A next year. The C bracket ended up containing all new MSU players, one experienced MSU senior, Aaron Grimmer, and one junior player, Devin Reis. The new collegiate players should take notice that there is no substitution for court time. Devin may be younger, but he was definitely more experienced, and it showed. Devin will be a terrific player when he goes to college in four years!! In the finals though, Aaron was able to beat Devin by minimizing his hand errors. There were a lot of comments about how good this division’s players were considering most of them had only a few weeks of handball experience. 90+ Doubles Quarterfinals:  • Mike Wells/Arne Wells d. Additionally, if you or your business can help sponsor this event, we will be able to hold a first class tournament for all the players. Some of you may be wondering why this National Tournament is not being held at the more traditional University of Minnesota Recreational Sports Center. The U of M Rec. Center is undergoing some significant expansion and renovation following our 2011 Open Singles tournament and will be unavailable for tournaments until 2013. We hope to see the Nationals back here in 2014 for a grand tournament.

WPH/EKTELON PRO STOP

November 4-7, 2010, FRIDLEY, MN LIFE TIME FITNESS

David Chapman improved his winning ways. Since the WPH started the FBC series, Chapman has finals appearances in Kansas City, Tucson, Las Vegas and Minneapolis; earning yellow jerseys, ranking points and over $14,000 in just those stops alone in prize money. Beyond this WPH/Ektelon event, Chapman has also won the USHA Detroit pro stop, 3 Wall Nationals (USHA) in Ohio and was in the finals of the USHA 4-wall nationals (Texas); all this year! In Minneapolis, MN, (Fridley, MN), Chapman stunned the local crowd with his professionalism on and off the court. He began his tournament conducting a DC Dream Clinic at the University of Minnesota in front of 20 collegiate handball hopefuls (Wednesday). When Thursday rolled around, he made way to Life Time Fitness and refereed pro qualifier matches courtside and then began play on Friday; where he dominated the field. "I feel really good, but I have traveled a lot lately. I would like to take a nap, but I will ref a few games for you," Chapman stated, as he made his way to the qualifier courts on Thursday. David Chapman (#1 seed) continued his

streak of first round pro stop wins (entering his 20th   season without losing in any opening round) when he took down fellow Missouri state handball pro, Eric Hillgren, in two straight. Chapman always fills stadium seats, but The Big E also puts fans in the stands; this match became crowded during warm ups. The two-seed, Luis Moreno (AZ), defeated Fergal Collins in two, but it became apparent that Fergal has improved his game. Always a fan favorite, Moreno smoothly took out his Tucson, AZ, roommate in this friendly pro stop that displayed top-level play and consistent dominance from Moreno. Sean Lenning got the tourney three seed, but has been battling pneumonia-like symptoms since the US Open and a recent doctor’s visit had Lenning bedridden for the previous five days leading up to this tournament. “I had to get going against Abe, my lungs weren’t ready for this match,” claimed Lenning. Well, once those lungs cleared out (11-0 in game two, with Montijo leading and after losing the first game), Lenning outscored Abe Montijo 21-0 to finish that game and 11-0 in the breaker to advance! The four and five seeds (David Fink and Naty Alvarado, respectively) barreled into the quarterfinals after defeating their counterparts in two straight. For Fink, he found himself down 12-17 versus journeyman Dan Armijo before catching fire. Alvarado cruised to a 11 and 2 score line verses Eddie Morales. For Fink/Alvarado this will be their third match-up; all won by Alvarado; the latest being in 2008. Billy O’Donnell came out looking very hot in his match versus Tommy little; the eight and nine seeds are supposed to be entertaining and competitive. For this one, there was no exception. Both competitors traded leads 11 times before Billy pulled-out to a 19-15 lead and looked to be playing for a spot in the quarters. But, the crafty Little outscored Billy 6-1 to close out game one 21-20. Little, down by five points to start game two caught fire and eventually secured a space in the elite eight with a 21-12 victory.

Local homegrown talent Andy Nett and Matt Hiber advanced. Hiber, the 11th seed, surprised Bill Mehilos (#6) with two 21-11 performances in front of his local fans. The show court was stacked with sponsors and fans when Andy Nett and Suhn Lee started their two-hour marathon match. For Andy, he was seeking another top 8 WPH tour stop finish, but most certainly revenge for the beating he took at the hands of Lee earlier in the year. After winning game one fairly easy, Nett let up in game two falling 21-17 to Lee. It was all Nett in the breaker and the fans cheered after every point; eventually winning 11-3. Chapman and Lenning entered the quarters on a crash course for each other. Chapman took down Tommy Little and Naty Alvarado (semis) before resting and waiting for Lenning to pull off an upset win in his semifinal match. Lenning was not the crowd favorite for his quarter match; which is rare because fans come in groves to watch "the freak" at out tour stops. Matt Hiber came to the courts with much local praise, but little known by today’s regular pro ballers. Hiber's game is amazingly sharp and crafty, plus the 40-year old is in amazing shape. Even though Lenning advanced with 21-11, 21-11 scores, the fans were highly entertained by his hustle and determination. Luis Moreno looked like the odds on favorite to make the bottom bracket finals and was two points from being there; up 19-15 in the second game the writing was on the wall for Lenning. Moreno sends another laser serve down the middle and Sean effortlessly rolls it out down the right, then stepped into the box to reel off a stunning six straight to force the breaker. In the third set, Moreno kept it close but Lenning dominated throughout and eventually pulls the upset win. Lenning vs. Chapman Finals Chapman and Lenning both took the final match serious; both on the court 45

minutes early and both looked very fresh. Unfortunately for Lenning, Chapman jumped out to a huge lead that Lenning decided to just let go, conserve energy, and hope for a run of his own. Chapman wins 21-2 in the first game. Game two was different from the beginning with Lenning leading early after the five-minute intermission. Chapman goes on a run of his own and takes Lenning out of the front court; than begins to nibble away at the score; eventually winning 21-7. The score doesn't give justice to how hard Lenning played, but the steady and consistent play from Chapman was the difference. Big congratulations to Life Time Fitness, Ektelon, Simplythankful.com, Mintec, Eric Hillgren, Abe Montijo, Fergal Collins, Dave Fink (announcer/Staggzcaster/cynic), Omar Lemus, Chris Foley, Jerry Jordhal, Minnesota Natural Medicine, SportsFresh, Inc, GreenHaven Printing and all of the donors and sponsors who made this event a huge success. RD OF 16: • CHAPMAN DEF HILLGREN, 9, 13 • LITTLE DEF O'DONNELL, 20, 12 • ALVARADO DEF MORALES, 11, 2 • FINK DEF ARMIJO 19, 11 • LENNING DEF MONTIJO (14), 11, 0 • HIBER DEF MEHILOS, 11, 11 • NETT DEF LEE, 8, (17), 3 • MORENO DEF COLLINS, 11, 12 QUARTERS: • CHAPMAN DEF LITTLE 5, 7 • ALVARADO DEF FINK 15, 9 • LENNING DEF HIBER 13, 19 • MORENO DEF NETT (14), 4, 6 SEMIS: • LENNING DEF MORENO (7), 19, 5 • CHAPMAN DEF ALVARADO 8, 6 FINALS: • CHAPMAN DEF LENNING 2, 7 Yambrick Qualifier Abraham Montijo (AZ) never had a lead in his first qualifier round, versus Blaze Selestow (WI), until the final point was scored. Blaze kept rallies alive, made timely shots and left Montijo off balance for all but the final couple points of that first game. In game two, Abraham got

back onto that form that saw him qualify last year with the USHA, when he defeated Selestow 21-6 with more kill shots and passes; despite leg cramps through the match. Montijo’s counterpart for the first qualifier spot (Yambrick Bracket) drove in from Springfield, MO, and was a bit rusty in game one versus Travis Owen. Will Lemp seemed out of sorts for the first half of the opening round, but eventually came around to win 21-19, 21-8. Owen put up a fight in the first set and showed all in attendance that he will be a future threat. Montijo vs. Lemp was a marquee match and top pros, qualifiers and local crowds packed the stands to watch this match. Will Lemp capitalized on those pesky Montijo leg cramps and built a lead that was too hard for Abe to climb; eventually winning 21-17 after a late first game surge by Montijo. Game two had both players tied at 15 and Montijo laying on the floor in pain; grasping his right hamstring. Lemp and Montijo constantly extending rallies in upwards of 40 shots took its toll on both athletes and even though Abe was nursing a bad hammy, Lemp was grasping for air. After multiple runs to the Life Time Café for pickle juice, Abe finally shook off the cramp and outscored Lemp 6-3 to win game two. That burst of energy continued in the third set when Abe only let young Will serve twice in a 11-1 rout. Yambrick Qualifier Rd 1 • Montijo def B. Selestow 21-20, 21-6 • Lemp def Owen 21-19, 21-8 Final • Montijo d Lemp (21-17), 21-18, 11-1 In the blind draw, Montijo drew Sean Lenning’s name (#3 seed) Muck Qualifier Eric Hillgren walked through his first round match versus Jimmy London, but had a buzz saw in New York’s Mike Schneider in his second match. For Schneider, he drew local legend, Mike Gustafson in the opening round and had two entertaining games before

advancing to the finals of the Muck Qualifier. Gustafson’s great back wall play and pro mentality seemed to be enough to take down Schneider, but his conditioning and tournament play were simply not sharp enough for Schneider. Schneider drew big leads in both games before Gustafson rallied back in the second; scoring eight of the final nine points before Schneider put him away. For Schneider, this marked his first qualifier finals appearance. On paper, this was the best match up of the night. The crafty sharpshooter from the streets of New York and the tall and talented, plus headstrong handballer ( Hillgren) from the mid west. Eric jumped out to a big lead, though and Schneider could not recover. Hillgren, serving at 16-0 in the first game, eventually went on to win 21-2. Schneider kept game two within striking distance for the majority of the first half, but eventually fell to Hillgren, 21-11 after great power serves, driving pass shots and consistent play from the “Big-E.” For Hillgren, this was his first qualifying attempt and win. After the match, Hillgren drew former MoState alumn, David Chapman (#1 seed) in the blind draw. Muck Qualifier Rd 1 • Hillgren def London 21-2, 21-3 • Schneider def Gustafson 21-10, 21-16 Final • Hillgren def Schneider 21-2, 21-11 Hillgren drew Chapman's name in the blind draw during the post qualifier ceremony. Rohrer Bracket Was dominated by Ireland’s Fergal Collins and Canada’s Shane Vigen. For Collins, he defeated Isiah Jones (ND) in a match that showed us the improvement of Jones and the importance of qualifiers in regional locales. Jones played extremely tough scoring 14 & 14 off the steady Collins. Vigen attacked Selestow early and jumped

out to quick leads in both games; eventually winning 21-10, 21-7 after Selestow (WI) strained a muscle or nerve in his lower back earlier in the match. Collins and Vigen looked like a possible tiebreaker match during warm ups, but young Collins took down Shane in two 21-6, 21-8, as Vigen had little to no answer to the Collins Endurance. Referee David Fink claimed, “These qualifiers are good! Will Lemp played very Good, Eric Hillgren is on Fire and Fergal Collins was amazing. I am impressed.” After the match, Collins drew Luis Moreno (#2) in the blind draw. Rohrer Bracket Rd 1 • Collins def Jones 21-14, 21-14 • Vigen def A. Selestow 21-10, 21- 7 Final • Collins def Vigen 21-6, 21-8

For the 17th consecutive year, the University of Minnesota Handball Classic got the Minneapolis Handball Season off on the right foot with some exciting match play. Mike Wells and John Stoffel also teach an Advanced Class on Tuesdays with 20+ players. This class utilizes videotaping & on-court instruction. Mike Wells reports that MSM will send a team of 22 players (up from 11 last year!) to defend their Division II combined mens’ and womens’ championship at the National Collegiate Championships in Tempe AZ. National Collegiate Tournament from February 23 – 27, 2011. The MSM HB Club is extremely grateful for the financial support received from the MSHA ($1,500) & individual contributors. University of Minnesota – Matt Hiber reports that there were 60 new HB players taking the twice weekly (Mon. and Wed.) Beginning HB class this past semester. The beginning classes start again in the spring semester. Jim Carlson continues to help with the teaching. Jesse Fleck and Dane Swanson are coaching groups of graduates and more advanced students on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the UM HB Club. At least 10 players participate on a regular basis. UM will send a team of 11 (7 men and 4 women) to the National Collegiate Championships in Tempe AZ National Collegiate Tournament from February 23 – 27, 2011. Chapman’s summer clinic in Durango CO, learning useful teaching techniques. Jesse used his Moy Langhorst Award funds for this trip. Mike was also invited to attend and observe David Chapman’s Advanced Clinic in December. Instructional & New Player Development Activities Mankato Area – John Stoffel leads the Junior HB effort in Mankato, teaching a Sunday afternoon program at the YMCA. He also invited Gary Cruz (USHA Development Director) to come to two Mankato-area high schools to teach PE classes for several days, with the goal of including HB modules in future courses. Twin Cities Area Summer Program –Paul Tobin organized and led a summer HB program designed to provide University students and other young players with a bridge into our handball community. It’s based upon the belief that many of the students who are introduced to HB at the University level, primarily at MSU and the U of M, are “lost” when the spring semester ends and these players have no incentive to play over the summer months and do not know players in the greater handball community that can draw them into a life-long commitment to the game.

The program consisted of 8 events over an 8-week timeframe, primarily through June and July. The attendance averaged 14 young players, including 4 females, per event. Skill levels ranged from newbie’s to future university stars, and even included some local young players looking to learn more about the game and meet other players. Each event ran approximately 2.5 hours and consisted of doubles and singles games and a special coaching clinic by Ray Miller that focused on strokes and practice techniques. Ray’s commitment, experience and passion for the game provided immeasurable value to the program.

Six of the eight events were held at the University of Minnesota, with thanks to Matt Johnson for his assistance in securing court times. The other 3 events were held at Life Time Fitness—two at the 98th st. club and one at Fridley. Life Time was very supportive and provided free passes for all of the players. After each event, a social gathering was held at a nearby pub.

Special “guest stars” who made appearances during the program included Steve Johnson, Mike Wells, Jim Carlson, Marc Tobin, Brian Burke, Andy Nett and others. These appearances were great motivators for the new players. A special thanks to all who made the effort to inspire the younger players!

Midway Y –Mitchell Lallier reports that there are 45 to 50 active HB players who have been newly introduced to the game and are playing at the Midway Y Mon through Fri 6:00 am to 7:30 am & Mon., Wed., and Fri. 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm. Mitchell will also be starting a youth HB program on Saturday afternoons for kids 7 to 12 years’ old. If anyone has gloves (new or used) to donate, please drop them off at the front desk at the Midway Y. This Newsletter is loaded with a year’s worth of tournament results. We encourage all able-bodied players to enter our tournaments. As a parting thought, remember that we all have a responsibility to continue the game by encouraging and supporting new players. It’s heartening to see the efforts and results of the various development programs. Pay it Forward!!
