HISTORY 1

HISTORYFifty years ago (in 1958) a young Mechanical Engineer wasresponsible for a laboratory installation at Dow Chemical Co.in Freeport, Texas. During the next three years, he becameresponsible for five laboratory installations at Dow.

It soon became clear to this young engineer that plumbingmaterials for laboratories were different from normal commer-cial and industrial plumbing. For example, drain material hadto be acid and solvent resistant. Corning and O.I. Shott filledthat need by providing fitting and pipe made of borosilicateglass made to Federal Standards Number DD-G-541B andASTM-C-1053. Plumbing service fixtures had index buttons,serrated hose ends, vacuum breakers, aspirators, etc. Thesematerials could not be found in the local hardware store orplumbing supply houses. These specialty hard-to-find itemsoften took 90 days to 180 days to deliver. A shorter deliverytime was desperately needed.

This young engineer helped solve an industry-wide deliveryproblem in 1961 by founding a Laboratory Specialty ServiceCompany, which later became Mechanical Specialty Inc., thenMSI and now MSI Products Inc., dba The Laboratory Store.
