Lesson Overview: This lesson is designed to help gauge the students level of French (listening, written and oral) with a specific focus on their knowledge of animals.

Grade: 6

Time: 40 minutes

PLO’S: Express acquired information in oral and visual forms Make and respond to simple requests

Materials:

Class set of animal place cards Tape Word search activity sheet Animal search picture Dictionary

Cross Curricular Connections:

Science-animals English-writing

Lesson-

Activity 1-Warm-up: Seek and Find Photo (3 Minutes)

Put up zoo photo for 1 minute and have the students find as many animals as possible in the photo. Ask students to write down the names of the animals that they see in French as well as how many of each animal they see. If students cannot remember the animals name in French have them write it in English and go over this as a class after the activity.

Activity 2- Listening and Speaking- Animal Pictionary (10 minutes)

Put students into groups of 6 and hand each group an envelope containing pictures of 12 different animals. Have each group member choose 2 of the pictures without

showing the other students. Explain to the students that they will take turns acting out their animals without the use of words. Encourage students to guess the animals using their French that we just reviewed in the warm-up.

Activity 3- Reading/ Writing- Animal Word Search (10 minutes)

Hand out the word search to each student in the class. Tell them that they may work on this activity alone or with others. Student may need help with the spelling of the animal name in French and may ask the teacher for help or look up the correct spelling using a dictionary.

Activity 4- Oral- What animal am I? (10 minutes)

Put a piece of tape on the back of each animal place card and tape an animal to each students back without them seeing their animal. Have students walk around and ask his or her peers for clues about their animal. Tell students that they can only ask question with a yes or no answer. Encourage the students’ use of French during this activity. You can also have the students do this with actions and sounds rather than words.

Closure: (7 minutes)

Have a class discussion about what animals were talked about today in class. Ask students if they would like to know more about these animals such as where they live, what they eat etc. Explain to the students that you will be doing a unit on animals in the zoo and that you will all work together to build your own zoo. Ask students to go home and think of one animal that they would like to know more about that was not discussed in today’s class. Come to class prepared to share the animals name in French and be ready to tell the class what more you would like to know about that animal.

Assessment:

Informal assessment will be used during this lesson as we gather at the end of the class and review the different animals discussed that day. The teacher will also get the chance to walk through the classroom as students are participating in activity 4 and gauge the students use of French rather than English during the activity. In assessing the students knowledge of animals in French, the teacher will be able to gauge whether or not the students are able to proceed to the next lesson in this unit.
