plug. The Vinylite sole has been provenvery successful, and is something that thepro should be pleased to sell his members.

For utility golf wear we are featuringa brown moccasin with a red lug sole.n is also our plan to have moccasins withhandsewn fore-parts in all brown, and abrown and white, for women, These allhave our unusual hand-sewn fore-parts.They will be easy fitting with comfortableMoccasin fore-parts, and no counters.

In addition to our Stroke-Master golfshoes for pros only, we are featuringStroke-Master moccasins for men andwomen, and particularly men's andwomen's Stroke-Master genuine whitebuck moccasins.

Our Stock department will be ampleso that pros can carry a minimum stockand depend upon us for fill-in orderspromptly.

Our golf shoes will retail from $12.95to $16.95 in our men's line and will offerthe pro a 40% mark-up. Our women'sshoes will sell at $12.95 and also enablehim to make 40%. Our Men's Stroke-

102

Master moccasins will sell at $10.95 and$12.95. Our women's Stroke-Mastermoccasins will retail at $8.95, and bothmen's and women's lines will enable thepro to make 40%.

It is our opinion that by carrying aminimum stock, and filling in regularlyon Stroke-Master golf shoes and mocca-sins, a Pro will add many dollars, andadditional profits, and sell his membersextra pairs by having an opportunity tocarry both the golf shoe and moccasin.By featuring moccasins the pro can ob-tain extra pairs of shoes in volume thathe has not had the opportunity to gain inthe past.

KRO DO 0., Mapl wood, . J.-Frank Mitchell, sales mgr., says advanceorders are well ahead of 194 fall book-ings of the Kroydon line. The 1950 lineshows only three models of irons all atlower prices than last year, varying from50 cents to 1 per club. "Muscle Back"feature of Kroydon irons made morepronounced in 1950 line. Blade consider-able thicker behind hitting zone. All ironswill have alloy fusing and rivet construc-tion.

In wood clubs Kroydon will have ninemodels in 1950 instead of 12 as in 1949.All wood design and trim entirely new.Persimmon and laminated heads andthree hafts-straight taper, Hy-Powerand Hy Test-will be featur -d, New facinserts and sole plates add to distinctionand beauty. Prices of woods reduced asmuch as 1.50 a club. New Golf-Pridrubber and oork clubs which were testedwith high satisfa tion in 194 and '49 arestandard equipment on several Kroydon1950 models. Nylon in bright colors, along with canvas and leather, in Kroy-don 1950 bag line. Several individuallub compartment bags at popular price.Mitchell says that d spite some pro

shops having fairly heavy inventory thisfall he sees no declin in golf market butsteady increase. Some store featuring of'distress' and abandoned models of golfmerchandise and prospects of that cut-price competition for pro in 1950, butMitchell observes that pro merchantshave learned how to meet this competi-tion with his superior knowledge of golf, closer contact with members and relianceon his own resourcefulness in quicklyadjusting his own selling operations tocompetitive conditions. Mitchell has beenmaking the full swing from east coast toKroydon salesmen and distributors on thewest coast and the company's LA branch.

Tersan this year wasmore extensively used than ever beforeon preventative schedules and performedreliably in curative treatments. Du PontF-531 was a standard preventative treat-ment for dollarspot. This fall Tersan wasextensively applied as protection againstsnow mold. Ammate in spray or dryapplication was widely used for poisonivy, hard-to-kill woody weeds. Spider Mite Damage StoppedOn Bent Grass Green

Spider mites are pests of world-widedistribution. The common red spider, thecyclamen mite, the clover mite, thechicken mite, the bulb mite, etc., are ex-amples of this tiny insect. Most of themfeed on tender plant tissue. Some feed onthe blood of fowl; others cause varioustypes of itch and mange in the skin ofmammals and certain birds. One familyis not parasitic - it lives on dried ordecaying organic matter.

Tiny light spots are produced on mostplants by the feeding spider mites. Theycommonly feed on the underside of theleaf and abstract plant juices with theirtiny sucking mouth parts. They thrive inhot, dry weather. A generation requiresabout a month for development.

During early May Lester Verhalennoticed injury to the grass on the prac-tice green at the Brynwood Country Club. There was an irregular reddish colored

streak, several inches wide, diagonallyacross the green. The grass on one sidewas of the characteristic bluish colorindicating wilt, just back of the advanc-ing reddish band. Farther back the grasswas brown and leaf blades were withered

and shrivelled. The clover patches werenot affected. Examination with a smallhand lense disclosed the presence of smallspider mites in large numbers concen-trated in the reddish band. Specimenswere collected and submitted to the Mil-waukee Museum for identification. Au-thorities there agreed at once that theinsect was a spider mite, but were notsure of the exact species. Other speci-mens were sent to Professor John C.Schread of the Connecticut Station be-cause Dr. Philip Garman there is an ex-pert in this phrase of entomology. Theyreport d the specimens to be Bryobiapra tiosa (clover mites), despite the ~actthat injury was confined to the Washmg-ton bent grass.

Famed Lloyd Range ClosesLloyd Driving Range, opened Sept. 30,

1932, five minutes from downtown Port-land, Ore., closed Sept. 20, 1949. Propertyto be used for building. The Lloyd rangeand short course probably involved byfar the biggest investment ever made inprivately-owned golf practice facilities. The 240 yd. long f nee was regarded asthe highest in the world (10ft.). It cost10,000. The range was sheltered for all-

weather play. The plant was underthe management of Joe Mozel who de-veloped in it, and primarily for it, thefirst completely automatic tees. Morethan 1 million balls were hit off theseautomatic tees during the progress ofthe Mozel automatic tee to comm rciallyoperative success. An electric m ter re-cording syst m with recorder in the rangeoffice was among the Mozel inventionswhich had the Lloyd range operating withsuch xtensive use of balls and incomeprotection that carrying co t of the en-tire expensive plant was handl d. Mozel'sperformance a operating dir ctor of thiscostly installation showed how a stiffinvestment on very expensive propertycould b justified.

WEST POINT'S LINK MOLE-DRAINThe Link Mole-Drain Assembly shown

This is the mole-drain assembly which fits intothe Aerifier frame. The sharp disc at the frontcuts a slit so the arm on which the bullet andchain are mounted will not tear the turf. Theroller in the back presses down turf at edges ofslit. The extent to which it marks the surface is

were made this year and are being usedat golf courses and experiment stationsto be marketed more extensively in 1950.It is believed the use of the mole-drainwill speed the removal of large quantitiesof water during periods of heavy rain. Itmakes openings down into the soil, deeperthan can be done by aerifying. But, themole-drain does not take the place ofaerifying; it does not loosen soil as theAerifier spoons do.

It is anticipated the mole-drain also will.be useful in the west where high amounts

of salt -in irrigation water cause a saltconcentration in the soil which is in-jurious to turf. Mole-draining will aid inthe removal of salts from the surface soil. The mole-drain is a sturdy enough gadget

This illustration shows what the steel bullet doesbeneath the surface. The channel is an inch indiameter. The gadget can be adjusted to makethe channel at any depth from three to eleveninches. There are no statistics on how long thechannel will stay open, though it's natural toassume it will stay open longer in heavy soil

than in sandy soil.
