8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday3:00 p.m. Sunday

Concert Auditorium $$DIRECTOR

Melanie Helton

Haunting melodies andfantastical tales meld into anevening of brilliant Frenchopera in Jacques Offenbach’sThe Tales of Hoffmann, looselybased on the short stories ofthe poet E.T.A. Hoffmann. Jointhe dreamscape of the storiesof Hoffmann’s three doomedloves: a mechanical doll, aservant of an earthly devil, anda dying singer. Each love storyhas its own twist as Hoffmannsearches for the ideal woman, only to lose each lover bymeans of his own foolishness. This is French grand operaat its best — a showcase forbrilliant singing, dramaticconfrontation, and soaringorchestral harmonies. Sung inFrench (with English sur titles).

A preview lecture will be h eld 45minutes before each performance.
