What Teen Vogue Doesn’t Tell You
by Kelsey Dassance
If you have Snapchat or the internet, you ’ve probably seen it.
Although Teen Vogue claims to be the “young person ’s guide to conquering (and saving) the world, ” they con-sistently share content and material that directly contradicts the very basis of human dignity. With headlines such as “How to Get an Abor!on if You ’re a Teen” and “ Is it Okay that I want to Watch Porn? ” followed by con-tent that encourages the use of pornography, sex!ng, masturba!on, abor!on, contracep!ves, etc., they are promo!ng the lie that our fulfillment as human beings is l imited to sexual pleasure or convenience.
I ’m not here to dispute these lies by lis!ng all the reasons why this perspec!ve is false and destruc!ve (you can find informa!on on the harmful effects of porn r ight here), but I would eagerly l ike to offer you another per-spec!ve.
You are made for more than lus$ul ambi!ons or empty promises. God created you good, and by your bap!sm, He claimed your heart in the name of real, sacrificial love. By His grace, we are made new and are capable of achieving something greater than “conquering the world.” His mercy empowers us to conquer ourselves and claim the freedom that is found in a life of virtue; in this case, chas!ty.
Let’s talk about sex, baby. Unfortunately, what Teen Vogue is presen!ng as prac!cal life advice is not libera!ng – but enslavement to our bodily desires that can never truly sa!sfy the longing of our hearts. They are correct in iden!fying that our sex-uality is a huge part of who we are. In fact, it significantly influences our daily l ives, our rela!onships, the deci-sions we make, etc. However, these desires do not define who we are; love defines who we are.
What’s love got to do with it? The desire to use our bodies as an expression of love for another person is not bad – in fact, it ’s inherently good and virtuous when used in reverence to the other person and our current state of life (AKA, within the sacrament of marriage). The desire for love and its expression is a large part of our human nature. Each of us also longs to love and be loved – totally, faithfully, and freely – which is meant to complement our bodily de-sires. However, when these desires are used in isola!on or apart from their uni!ve purposes, they become dis-ordered and lack the fulfillment that the Father desires (CCC 2351).
The reality is, we were created for love, which is uni!ve by nature, and an ordered life offers us the experience of authen!c love – but it isn ’t always easy. So when the world invites you to seek fulfillment on your own, with-out having to consider another person in their full, God -given dignity, it can be temp!ng to seek pleasure by our own means, rather than real, uni!ve love that does not cul!vate use or isola!on. Although this may lead to temporary sa!sfac!on, we will never find true fulfillment in degrada!on.
As Chris!ans, we know that God calls us to something greater than what the world offers us. In John 10:10, Je-sus tells us “A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”… TO BE CONTINUED ON NEXT BULLETIN

26° SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflection in preparation for next weekend’s Gospel
If you saw someone dead come to life tomorrow, what would you change about your life? Would you say "nothing"? That's what Jesus seems to hope. After all, we already know what to do. In this Sunday's Gospel, a rich man and a poor man pass away, the former to damnation and the latter to peaceful rest alongside the Jewish patri-archs. The rich man asks if the poor man can appear to his brothers and advise them to live a more virtuous life. The parable offers a strong rebuke: "They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them." In other words, they should already know what to do. We, too, know what to do. More than Moses, Jesus Christ himself has spoken, and continues to speak through his Church. The rich man did not heed the wise words, de-spite knowing them. If we are convicted against certain Christian teachings in our heart, how much good will mi-raculous "proofs" do? We know more than the law and the prophets - we know the prophetic law of love proclaimed by Jesus Christ. Are we living like we believe it? Where in our lives are we like the rich man? Do we know how to treat the poor but still we ignore them in our ex-cess? Do we know the third commandment, but the Sun-day liturgy feels "optional" when other weekend commit-ments arise? Have we heard Christ's teachings on sexual-ity, but consider them out of reach for us? We have re-ceived a great many truths as Christian people. We are blessed by God with the sacraments and the abundance of His graces. We have what we need - in Him - to begin to live a virtuous life now.

Septiembre 29, 2019 26° DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO
