Congratulations on the

appointment of a new Vicar

(see inside). The new appoint-

ment begins mid November

and I wish you much success

for this new stage in the life of

the Parish. I have to admit a

sense of disappointment at

having such a short time left to share with you all. My

growing list of things to tackle becomes more difficult

in the limited time-frame, so I offer my apologies in

advance for anything not completed before I leave.

It has been an exciting time of learning this last

month. The time spent travelling around looking for

house numbers and learning the street names has

been valuable as I now feel more at home here in the

Harbour Basin. Visiting and being involved in the

various Parish/Community Activities has offered great

opportunities to meet with many of you who make this

place tick. I look forward to our continuing

conversations – so feel free to pop in for a chat.

It is amazing how well each Parish Church reflects the

surrounding close-knit community, and I think this is

something to be really treasured. One of the many

community connections to be encouraged further is

your involvement in the Orton Bradley Park Fair. This

year the Parish will additionally operate a Craft Table

at the fair. The Craft Table will offer activities for the

attending children and will include an invitation to a

Family Service at Diamond Harbour on the 30

October. My time in your Parish has been truly a

blessing and I thank you for making it so enjoyable.

May you continue to be a blessing to each other and

to the communities in which your life is nestled.

There are so many people who work behind the

scenes in the Parish to keep the cogs turning. For

example Christopher Grey, Ted and Victoria How-

den and Tony Eastwood do an amazing job main-

taining and overseeing Church buildings. Others

serve on vestry, drive the minibus, help run ser-

vices and groups, clean—the list can go on and

on…...Thank you to all.

Audrey Hughes is one of these people, always

ready to help and do jobs for so many people.

Recently she used her skills as a professional book

binder to restore books for Mount Herbert Parish.

When asked what we should pay her for her labour

she said “Nothing, just send a prayer for me.” Well

we can definitely do that as well as send our thanks.

THANK YOU

Greetings from Motueka Hi lovely people. we think of you all and pray for you all often. As we have now been in Motueka for 8 months we felt the time was right to write greetings to you all and update you on our news. Life has been hectic and good here in the Tas-man bay..we always said we swapped one para-dise for another and still think this! We do miss the cliff track walks with our dog buddies and the trips on the ferry. We have found new things to occupy our social time here in Motueka. We join with some other parishioners and friends at the local pub on a Friday night as often as we can for a drink and sometimes a meal. There are 2 lovely beach walks close to home we take Otis on most days. The folk here love him. He doesn't attend church which is a good thing but does go to work whenever Russell is in his office. The folk here are lovely and have been very wel-coming. We are loving messy church which we both help with and Anna helps with Tom thumbs playgroup every Thursday morning as well as service/worship leading twice a month. We are thrilled to have a great connection with the other pastors in the town and meet with them weekly for prayer. Russell has also initiated a combined Sunday night church service where we pray for the community. These weekly services are shared around the churches and have been held for over 3 months now with good attendance and great faith building. We do miss you all and wonder how you are getting on. We pray God's blessing for you all and please know we send our love to all you lovely folk at Mt Herbert parish. You will always have a special place in our hearts. Love and blessings we pray Russell and Anna

The Search Is Over!

Rev Dr Megan Harvey has been appointed as our new Vicar. She will start

fulltime in November. The Parish very much looks forward to welcoming, and

getting to know her. Here is a bit about her in her own words.

Hello everyone. I am so grateful to you as a community for appointing me. I am

very excited about joining you as a parish and as a wider community. It will be

the first time in a while that I have been able to live in the community I am

ministering to and with, so that is pleasing.

So, a little about me. I know many of you have had the chance to see my CV

and my response to the parish profile. I think those documents give you a good

idea of my work and ministry experience, which have been varied. On a more

personal level, I was born in Taihape and lived all over New Zealand and the

world as my father was in the army. I attended a number of different schools

growing up and now am blessed to have friends all over the globe. Army life is

quite a different way of living, but actually prepares you well in many ways for

ministry.

We (Mum, Dad and my brother Tim) settled in Christchurch over thirty years ago. We were posted here – kicking and

screaming – from Wellington, but once we were here we fell in love with the province and decided to opt out of army

life and stay. After high school I did psychology at university and got my Masters in Developmental Psychology. I did a

lot of work in the psychology department tutoring and lecturing as well as research. The areas I looked at mostly were

around parenting styles and gender, and theory of mind (ask me I’ll explain!).

Then I went to work for the National Addiction Centre as a researcher looking into treatment for those with alcohol or

drug issues. It was very challenging and rewarding work and I made some wonderful friends. It was an amazing team to

work within and taught me a lot about leadership and team work. While I was there I did my PhD on adolescent

cannabis use and how it affects their brains.

Then God’s call came upon my life. I was so happy as a Christian and attending church I wanted to help other people

discover and explore the joy God brings into our lives. I looked upon the priests I knew with great respect and marvelled

at how they were able to live their lives. Then it was suggested perhaps this was the life for me. It took a fair bit of

thought, but the call from God for this vocation was too strong to ignore.

About ten years ago I was accepted to train for ordination. I went up to Auckland to St John’s seminary and got a

degree in theology. When I returned to Christchurch I was a curate at Opawa-St Martins and Spreydon parishes and

then Priest-in-Charge at Spreydon. After Spreydon I had a three year break from ministry spent concentrating on some

other aspects of life and faith. At the start of this year the Bishop appointed me as the Priest-in-Charge of Kaiapoi parish

as they too sought a new Vicar. It was my first real experience of rural or semi-rural ministry and I loved it! It is from

that parish that I will be coming to you. I will be accompanied by my sweet cat Lorelai (pronounced Laura lie). She is a

beautiful eight-year-old tabby with a lovely nature whose entire universe revolves around food (she knows the squeak

the cupboard her food is kept in makes when opened).

Thank you again for having me working in your community of faith and I am so looking forward to getting to know you

all as we live out and share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

God bless you all.

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.

Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, He would say,

'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said,

"Ryan, you be Jesus!"

Treasurers Report

“The fellow who has no money is poor; the fellow who has nothing but money is poorer still.” -Billy Sunday.

Fortunately as a parish we do have money; and we are blessed with the “immeasurable riches of God’s

grace............” (Eph 2:6). In the past week we have opened a general “reserve account” and transferred $10000 to

this account. It will yield some interest and is at least short-term reassurance for when we move from part-time to

full-time vicar expenses. We had a good month in August where income was considerably ahead of expenses; this

continues the pattern of income and expenses varying quite a lot month to month. Giving by regular bank

payments/automatic payments does tend to flatten out this fluctuation. The graph and charts below show income

and expenditure month by month and year-to-date.

If you have questions or need help with financial things related to your giving, please talk to Margaret Somerville

(Ph. 329-4713) or Russell Lienert (Ph. 329-4066)

Inflation is when you pay fifteen dollars for the ten-dollar haircut you used to get for five dollars when you had hair!

A couple of years ago, on a Sunday evening, I received an ur-

gent text from a friend from Church. All it said was that her son

had had an accident and was critical—pray. It turned out he

had been messing about in a hammock and had ended up

strangled. When they found him, he was blue and not breath-

ing. As her husband resuscitated him, and then the paramedic

took over, my friend texted people to pray—she believed in the

power of prayer to call out and ask God to help. And pray we

did, both individually and in groups over the next few days as he was in a coma. Messages were sent

around with updates for prayer. Even though it is thought that the boy hadn’t had oxygen to his brain

for a minimum of 8 minutes, a week later, much to the astonishment of the Consultants, he returned

home, recovered. His parents were convinced this was due to God and the power of prayer. Being able to

pray and ask for prayer either in struggles or thanksgiving is an amazing privilege and gift. We have a

prayer chain here in this Parish, headed up by Anne Fountain, but due to people having moved away, the

numbers on it have dwindled. If you would be interested in joining a prayer chain, to pray for those that

ask in our community, please contact Anne (329 4202) for more information. Also if there is anything

you would like prayer for, then also contact Anne. Helen Cobby

St Cuthbert’s—growing out of the ground!

St Cuthbert’s is now starting to look more like a church. The builders are doing a great job,

the reinforced concrete and concrete block shell of the church is nearly complete and the

stone masons have moved in. Their first key task was to reinstate the arch between the nave

and the chancel.

As seen above the last few blocks of the arch

are being placed. This is exacting work to en-

sure the arch blocks meet accurately at the top

and so the arch is true and looks good. These

blocks are pinned and mortared together with a

steel strap tying them together on the outside.

Then the builders placed more reinforced con-

crete. This must be one of the strongest stone

arches in the country!

The East wall of the chancel is looking good, it has

now been cast in reinforced concrete and ready for

the installation of the original stonework. The

stonework tracery of the East window will be pinned

to the concrete and mortared in place ready for the

cobble wall facing to be placed around it.

It is great to see so many stonemasons working on

site as this is a very time consuming part of the job.

The roof structure has some rot and borer damage

so some timber will be replaced by the builders to

make it sound.

We are now planning items not covered by the

Church Property Trust project, like the protection of

the stain glass windows, the purchase of some

chairs to replace a few of the pews, and many

smaller items that need refurbishing. Some funds

have already been generously donated to the local

St Cuthbert’s funds but we will need to raise more.
