October, 2014

I was just trying to help. I found the

chipmunk in the forest just behind our

home. He looked like he was hurt and

I’ve always been a softie for injured

animals. I picked him up, carried him

home, and began looking after him. Finally he did get

better and started running around his cage in a way that

made me dizzy watching him.

I was just trying to help. What if he went back into the

woods and got hurt again? A nine year old mind could

picture a million ways for that to happen. One day as we

sat outside under a tree, I took him out of the cage to pet

him and assure him that I wouldn’t let anything happen to

him. That’s when it happened! The little sucker bit me,

jumped out of my hands, and ran away forever. After

everything I’d done for him! I was just trying to help.

Often we’re just trying to help. As we plan our church

programs and budget, we’re just trying to help. We make

sure costs are kept at a minimum. We try to stay as close

to last year’s budget as possible. After all, we’re just

trying to help.

We are the church of Jesus Christ called to ministry

and service. Sometimes that means taking risks and

pushing ourselves beyond anything we’ve ever done

before, because that’s what we’ve been called to do.

In my attempt to “help” the chipmunk I was really

holding it back from being the free creature that it was

created to be. Often, in our attempt to “help” the church

we’re really holding it back from being the inspirational,

nourishing, loving, and serving organization that it was

created to be. The church needs our help. May our

decisions and our actions help it be what it was created to

be.

Consistory Meeting Minutes

August 7, 2014

Members Present: Gloria Apple, Linda Ayers,

Dallas Belvin, Bill Craft, Lloyd Gilliam, Clifton

Greeson, Dora Moore, Cheryl Royal, and Becky

Stafford.

Trustees Present: Harden Phipps and Stephen

Shue.

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. A

quorum was established and President Lloyd

reviewed the proposed agenda.

Devotions: Lloyd Gilliam presented his devotion

from “Nothing on Earth Satisfies” by Max Lucado.

He stated that we are not satisfied in the world. We

brought nothing into the world, so we can take

nothing out. But, if we have food and clothes, we

will be satisfied with that 1 TIMOTHY 6:7–8.

Because there is nothing on earth that can satisfy

our deepest longing. We long to see God.

Trustee’s Report – Harden Phipps

Harden stated that he asked Jim Fields, of

Superior Mechanical Heating & Air, for the

completion date of August 31, 2014 for heating

system installation, with the exception of the boiler

start-up. The Consistory will have to approve the

company that will supply the gas.

Harden supplied prices from several companies.

A motion was made and seconded that we have the

propane tank installed above ground and we

continue with Liberty Oil Company since they gave

the lowest bid.

Approve previous month’s minutes: The minutes

from the June meeting were read and approved. A

motion was made and seconded that we approve the

minutes.

Treasurer’s Report – Bill Craft

Bill Craft reported the total June expenses as

$25,435.61. This included $19,628.55 in budgeted

items and $5,807.06 in other items. Income

included $21,465.87 including $16,630.55 from

contributions and $4,835.32 from the parsonage CD

for payment for pipe insulation and labor. Major

expenses for June included our quarterly Insurance

Board ($4,888) and Pension Board ($4,659)

payments along with HVAC labor costs ($3,950)

and salaries ($4,584). A motion was made and

seconded to approve the June report. The motion

was carried.

Stewardship Committee – Bill Craft

Bill reported that the Stewardship Committee met

August 5th

with a full agenda. He thanked the

committee members for their hard work as well as

for help from so many others who donated their

time, money, and who made contributions of food

and other offers of assistance. Profits from the Hot

Dog Luncheon were $1,078 and we feel good about

our first hot dog lunch. We hope to continue to

improve our processes in advance of our next lunch

to be held August 16th

.

Evangelism Committee – Dallas Belvin

Dallas Belvin reported that the Evangelism

committee didn’t meet in July since the President of

this committee, Connie Blakesley, had a family

emergency. He announced that the visitor cards

from the offering plate had been turned in to Pastor

Lloyd and that he had visited the ones on the cards.

Meals for Kids – Gloria Apple

Gloria Apple reported that with school being out

our sponsors have continued to show their support

which is great. It helps to have a good start to the

new school year. They will get started up as soon as

they hear from the school about the number of

families that we need to help this year. Signs to

advertise Meals4kids and Greensboro Urban

Ministry are at the printers being worked on.

Pastor’s Report – Reverend Spencer

Lloyd announced that the church had a great

Vacation Bible School.

Plans are under way to start confirmation classes

and there are eight or nine confirmands within the

church.

He stated that the Southern Conference in

Virginia was very successful with five new church

start-ups. Lloyd stated that he and Gussie plan to

take a vacation August 10th

and he had Dale Starr

lined up to fill in that Sunday. He announced that

Gary Owen would be on call should any

emergencies arise.

Continuing Business

Teaching the teachers the Safe Church Policy –

Lloyd Gilliam

Lloyd Gilliam announced the sessions for the

Safe Church Policy will be conducted in August for

teachers that had not taken the course.

A journey of Faith – Lloyd Gilliam

Lloyd announced that we have not heard anything.

Pastoral Committee – Lloyd Gilliam

Lloyd announced that the committee met in July

and plans to meet again September 3rd

. He added

that a suggestion box is available for members to

make suggestions.

Van Update- Clifton Greeson

Clifton Greeson stated that the van worked great for

the youth beach trip and that they were waiting for

Pastor Cox on the lettering. The van cover will be

set after the shelter is completed.

New Business

Linda Ayers asked the Consistory if The Good

Earth Garden Club could put a small sign in the

garden at the portico stating that the flower bed was

maintained by the garden club. A unanimous vote

was made by consistory members that a small sign

could be erected.

Youth Leader – 2015

Lloyd Gilliam stated that Sharon Moore would be

stepping down as Youth Leader since she had only

agreed to serve for a one year term. Lloyd asked

Cathy Gossett, Gloria Apple, Dallas Belvin to form

a committee to find a replacement for that position.

Pastor Lloyd had the closing prayer.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm.

The next meeting will be held September 11th

at

7:00 pm

Respectfully submitted, Linda Ayers, Secretary

Rev. Spencer began our new

study, Reconciling Paul, at our

joint circle meeting in

September. Because of several

conflicts he will not be able to

lead the Bible study in October.

Heads up Willing Workers! We will now meet on Monday October 6

th in the

choir room at 1:30 pm. I will lead the Bible study

with this circle. Mary/Martha will meet on Tuesday

October 14th

at 7:00. Jaynee Brown will lead the

Bible study with assistance from Linda Miller. The

study books have arrived for those who ordered.

You may pick up the books from me, but please pay

Barbara Greeson.

Jaynee Brown, Jeanne Ingold and I rode to

Black Lake on September 20th

for the Fall

Enrichment meeting of the Western North Carolina

Church Women. We had an enjoyable day in a great

facility; heard a dynamic speaker, Rev. Misty

Polston-York; met two of the young residents of

Nazareth Children’s Home who have been awarded

scholarships by the WNC church women. We were

particularly pleased to see Rev. Ken Clapp. We had

an excellent lunch prepared by Ken. We learned of

upcoming events planned for the Church Women,

and also the 50th

anniversary of the Southern

Conference of the UCC which will be held in

Greensboro in 2015.

The makeover of our new parlor is coming

along well. Cheryl Royal and her team are doing an

excellent job. We will have quite a few people to

thank when the work is completed, and they won’t

all be women!

Don’t forget our bazaar is coming up soon,

November 1st. Many of you are continuing to work

on items to sell. There will be another quilt raffle

this year, so see Cynthia Morris for details. Our

quilters are a great resource for our congregation.

They have recently made “welcome bags” which

the Evangelism Committee will be filling and

giving to visitors and new members of our church.

Thanks ladies!

In conjunction with the bazaar will be our

next chicken pie/barbecue supper. As usual, we

know we can count on the women of the church to

help with preparing chickens, making pies etc. as

well as baking lovely desserts to serve at the supper.

Thank you ladies once again for preparing

the refreshments following Mike Cox’s memorial

service. Carmen, Shannon and Chelsey are very

precious to us and they were most appreciative of

the outpouring of love for them in their time of loss.

Love and blessings to you all,

Elizabeth Craft

Friends & Neighbors

Friends and Neighbors reconvened on

Tuesday, September 16 with some toe-tapping

music and lots of fun for everyone. Dottie

welcomed all to our first meeting for the year. Our

visitors were Rev. Kristen Vaughan and Mercedes,

who was with Clarine Ingod. We met in the church

fellowship hall for our business meeting. Ferol

Wolfe gave the devotions. “Starting Where You

Are” was her topic and was taken from the book of

Jonah. We sang Happy Birthday to Clarine Ingold,

and Bob and Dottie Deeter for their September

birthdays. Then we enjoyed Sarah Daffron and her

clogging dance team. Our own Judy Gerner is now

a part of this group, and it was fun to see the fancy

steps of this lively group as they kept time to the

music. What energy! We really enjoyed them. For

lunch we enjoyed sharing a covered dish meal.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October

21 at 10:00. We will meet at the church, then go to

the Old Guilford Mill for a tour. Hopefully the

weather will cooperate, and we will get to enjoy

some fall colorful leaves. Following our tour, we

will have lunch at the Golden Coral on Lawndale.

Hope you will join us.

For those who want to attend, we have been

invited to the Senior’s Fellowship held at Moriah

United Methodist Church the first Tuesday of every

month at 10:00. October’s meeting will be October

7 and includes lunch. This is for all seniors who live

in the Southeast area of Guilford County and is

sponsored by United Way. Reservations are

required (due to the need to know how many

lunches to prepare) and may be made by calling

Tracey Keaton at 336-674-7273.

Friends & Neighbors

Greensboro Urban Ministry: In the

month of September we took 168

Pounds of food to Urban Ministry.

What a blessing! The October dates

for Urban Ministry’s collections will

be Sunday, October 5th

, and again on

October 12th

. For your convenience a

basket has been placed in the Narthex for donations.

There is also a monetary container there if you can’t

get to the store to buy something. There are also

containers in the breezeway. One or two cans from

each of us will go a long way to help feed those less

fortunate than we are. We pray for God’s blessings

on all of us as we support this much needed

ministry. The need is still great for help!

Fifth Sunday Service: On August 31

st, our youth

participated in the worship service for our fifth

Sunday.

Our awesome youth did a great job!

Jeff & Sue Holt and Bennie & Judy Gerner

helped out with the music.

Kraven and Kaitlyn Webb captivated the little

ones during the Children’s Moment.

Emma Strouth gave the sermon.

Ice Cream Social: Everyone enjoyed great fun and

fellowship at the ice cream social on Sunday,

September 7th, along with delicious ice cream!

Report on Hot Dog Lunch of September 20, 2014

We are pleased that the September

Hot Dog Lunch was so well

attended. For those who came, we

again had good food, fellowship,

and an opportunity to catch up on

community news. We even saw a

number of friends and neighbors we hadn’t seen in

a while. To all of you, we thank you for your

support for our church.

We have had donations of checks and cash, as

well as contributions of time, food, and excellent

desserts to support our efforts. Our Stewardship

Committee, the primary sponsor, includes Gloria

Apple, Becky Stafford, Bennie Gerner, Cathy

Gossett, Cliff Greeson, Lloyd Gilliam, Simon Clark,

Brenda Currie, and Bill Craft. Many others

including many of our spouses helped as well. As

announced in Church, we have deposited $675.75 in

proceeds, and we are holding an additional $183.25

for change for the next hot dog lunch, October 18th

,

the final lunch of the 2014 season. Please keep

October 18 from 11 AM through 1 PM on your

calendars and encourage family and friends to

attend.

The Stewardship Committee is a standing

committee of our Consistory responsible for

teaching the Christian principles of stewardship,

selecting and promoting special offerings, and

assisting the Consistory in raising funds for our

church and its mission.

Our hearty congratulations to

Jeff Holt and Sue Rousch who

were married here at Mt. Hope

on Thursday, August 21st.

Welcome Jeff and Sue Holt!!

New Member: Below is a photo of Emma Strouth,

our newest member, with our Consistory President,

Lloyd Gilliam and the Pastor, Lloyd Spencer. She

joined our church family on Sunday, September 28,

2014. Emma is the daughter of Phillip and

Stephanie Strouth. Dee Greeson is the proud

grandmother.

September 28th

Special Music: We were all happy

to welcome “Yer Crooked Cousins” to our worship

service on Sunday, September 28th. The members

of this old-time band are Jason Hughes-banjo,

Brooke Ward-mandolin, Holly Riley-fiddle, Nate

Goldsmith-guitar, and Emily Damrel-bass. Holly

Riley played “Amazing Grace” on the fiddle as a

solo. The entire band played “In the Sweet By and

By” and “By the Mark”. “Yer Crooked Cousins”

will be performing at the International Bluegrass

Music Awards held in Raleigh on October 3, 2014.

“Yer Crooked Cousins”

Address Change: Joan Craven has been moved to

Piney Ridge Rehabilitation Center. The address is

706 Pineywood Rd., Thomasville, NC 27360.

Address Change: Kevan and Sharon Moore have

moved. Their new address is 4817 McConnell

Road, McLeansville, NC 27301. Kevan’s cell phone

number is 336-587-3232 and Sharon’s cell phone

number is 336-324-1229. Please note these changes

in your church directory.

Meals4Kids: Meals4kids is

kicking off the new school

year and our first bagging is

Tuesday October 14th

at 7pm

and is open to volunteers.

We are looking to be doing

at least one week of each

month at Nathanael Greene

for the 2014-2015 school year and may be asked to

help with another. We were truly blessed with our

sponsorship and donations last year and we ask that

you keep our mission in your prayers for this

year. “Feed the hungry and help those in trouble.

Then your light will shine out from the darkness

and the darkness around you will be bright as day.”

Isaiah 58:10

Rachael Gossett has earned

her Gold Award, which is the

highest award in Girl

Scouting. She created a program at Mount Hope

Fire Department called Christy's Closet to distribute

relief bags to people who have been displaced by

fires or other natural disasters. These bags

contained toiletries, gloves, brushes/combs,

blankets, and hand sanitizers. She made 100 relief

bags thanks to the help of family, friends and this

wonderful community.

Fall Hoedown: The Fellowship Committee will be

sponsoring a Fall Country Hoedown on October

5th, at 4:00 pm. We will be having Sloppy Joes and

fixins, a hayride, lots of games, apple bobbing, and

great fun. If anyone has a light-weight frying pan

that they can donate and not care for it's return we

would appreciate it very much. See Virginia or Cleo

Barker. SEE YOU THERE.

ATTENTION PARENTS: We are starting a

music program for ages Nursery through 5th

grade

that will be held the 2nd Sunday of every month

during the Sunday School hour. Our goal is to teach

and familiarize our children with Bible songs and

music. We will be meeting in the sanctuary to sing.

Dates for the rest of the year are as follows: October

12, November 9, and December 14. We hope they

will be ready to sing during the church service

before Christmas! So please make sure you have

your children attend! We need all of their precious

voices! -- The Music & Worship Team

Make A Difference Day:

The youth will be

participating in Make a

Difference Day on October

25th. They are planning on

making and delivering

lunches to Alamance Plaza

residents. We will be asking for donations of food

supplies for the lunches. We will be placing a list

of the needed items in the breezeway. If you would

like to help or have questions, then please contact

Kristen Greeson at [email protected] or 565-0696.

Anyone wanting to participate is welcome to join

us. This is a day for everyone to make a

difference!

Chicken Pie & BBQ Supper – the date for the fall

supper is less than a month away. November 1 is

the date, and plans are already underway for this

project. Please discuss in your Sunday school class

recommendations for the 15% from this supper. We

need your recommendations by October 19th

so

our supper committee can make a final decision

at our meeting on October 21st. The 15% from the

March supper went to Alzheimer’s Research and

Meals4Kids. We look forward to working with

everyone on supper activities.

~Mount Hope t-shirts are now available by

pre-order ~ 4

Many of our youth and adults have been asking for

a t-shirt to wear representing our church. With

various inputs from Mount Hope youth, leaders,

members, our pastor and a few outside sources, we

have designed a t-shirt for that purpose. The shirts

are blue and include the UCC logo with Mount

Hope, Whitsett, NC on the front left pocket area.

The back has a close drawing of the front of our

church (as general as possible to print well), along

with the key values Mount Hope represents: Love,

Family, Faith and Commitment, with stick people

between the words, to keep it fun, as well as our

website. We felt this set of words exhibit the core

values that make Mount Hope strong and will help

keep us strong for generations to come.

Shirts made by Gildan Ultra Cotton, are 100%

cotton pre-shrunk and the bodies of the shirts are

cut straight. They are available in the following

sizes for $15.00 each:

The Neighbors in Need

offering, which we will

receive on October 19th

,

supports the UCC’s ministries

of justice and compassion

throughout the United States.

Two-thirds of the offering is

used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries

to fund a wide array of local and national justice

initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service

projects. Through UCCTakeAction.org, our

national Justice and Witness Ministries office offers

resources, news updates, and action alerts on a

broad spectrum of justice issues. Working with

members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action

Network (a network of thousands of UCC justice

and peace advocates), Justice and Witness continues

its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as

the federal budget, voting rights, immigration health

care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental

justice. Neighbors in Need also supports our

American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third

of the offering supports the UCC’s Council for

American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Historically,

forebears of the UCC established churches and

worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Mandan,

Hidatsa, Arickara, and Hocak in North and South

Dakota, Wisconsin, and northern Nebraska. Today

there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and

one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in

Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their

pastors are supported by CAIM. CAIM is also an

invaluable resource for more than 1,000 individuals

from dozens of other tribes and nations who are

members of other UCC congregations in the U.S.

Neighbors in Need helps make another world

possible. It needs your support. Please give

generously. And remember, contributions to

Neighbors in Need can be made online at any time:

ucc.org/nin.

Thank you: Ladies, words cannot express to you

my thanks for all the delicious food, serving, and

cleaning you provided for the reception after the

Cox funeral on September 6th

. The family and

friends were so appreciative for our kind deed.

Again, what a great group of ladies! Jaynee,

Bereavement Committee

Thank You: The family of Mike Cox would like to

thank the members of Mount Hope Church for

being there for us. Thank you so much for the food,

cards, calls and prayers, it makes times like these a

little easier with such a caring and loving church

family. We also extend a thank you to Pastor Lloyd

Spencer for the memorial service he did for us on

Saturday. It was just what Mike would have

wanted, happy memories. God Bless each one of

you. Carmen, Shannon and Chelsey

Thank you: To the Mt. Hope Church Ladies,

Thank you for the food and the prayers. We love

you all! Love, Darce and Ruby Greeson.

Thank you: To Mt. Hope: Thank you for all the

cards, visits, and prayers I received during my

recent surgery and my sister passing away. Peggy

Greeson

Thank you: The Stewardship Committee would

like to thank everyone who came out Saturday,

September 20th

, and purchased some hot dogs at our

monthly hot dog lunch. We had a really good

turnout this time. We would also like to thank

anyone who donated items once again to help make

this a success for our church. You are a blessing!

Remember we have one more for this year which is

October 18th

. Come out and get some hot dogs!

Thank you: Dear Friends (Gleaner/Whitener

Sunday School Class), Words can hardly express

our appreciation for your recent donation of $20.00

that will be used to help ship medicine bottles to

under-developed countries in this world. They will

probably go to Kenya or the Domican Republic. It

is so kind of you to keep this important project in

mind – the bottles as well as shipping funds. Thanks

a million! Sincerely, Northeast McLeansville 4-H

Estate Planning Lunch and Presentation

On Sunday, September 21st, our Stewardship Committee along with Friends and Neighbors co-hosted an after-

worship lunch in the new Fellowship Hall. The program speaker was Mr. Peter A. Sullivan of Fidelity

Investments, Greensboro Investor Center. He stressed the importance of Estate Planning to better prepare for

difficult decisions impacting and preserving wealth and passing it along to the beneficiaries and the causes we

choose to support.

We had a total of thirty-six attendees as our lunch guests, and we hope that all of us learned and benefited from

the program. We wish to thank Mr. Sullivan for his detailed message and for his willingness to volunteer to

speak. Many people from our Stewardship and Friends and Neighbors Committees assisted with the

preparations and we are indebted to all of you for what you did to make this meeting possible.

Sincerely,

The Stewardship Committee (William Craft) & Friends and Neighbors (Dottie Deeter)

CHICKEN PIE &

BARBECUE SUPPER

Can you believe it’s already time to begin preparations for our fall Chicken Pie

& BBQ Supper? Once fall arrives, it’s time to get started with plans for the

supper! This year the date is Saturday, November 1. We have already begun

work, and will appreciate everyone’s help as we go forward so we will be

prepared for our guests. Check out the schedule posted here to see when workers

will be needed and help by volunteering. It is a good way to get involved as well

as serve your church and community. New workers are welcome. Just show up at

any of the work details; someone will be glad to show you what needs to be done. A lot of work is

involved, but it is also a time of good fun and fellowship. We especially need help at the pits on

Tuesday night and Friday morning. We also need help with the chickens on Friday morning at

the church and folks to dry dishes and help clean up Saturday night. Please commit to serve in

one of these positions.

Invite your friends and neighbors to join us Saturday, November 1. We will begin serving at

5:00 p.m. Eat in plates or take-out trays will be available at $8.00; barbecue will also be sold by the

pound for $7.00.

Thanks for your support of this church event. It’s very rewarding to see the fellowship and

teamwork as everyone works together on this project.

If you have questions or suggestions, call Clifton Greeson at 697-1930 or 336-580-3790.
