FROM THE PRINCIPAL Melissa Nelson

Kia ora Parents and Whanau Thank you for supporting our Teacher Only Day tomorrow (Thursday 29 March). We will be meeting with the staff of all of our contributing schools and Mt College, in the morning, to listen to an invited speaker. We will then be moving back to school to participate in some professional learning, as a team. These opportunities are valuable and we appreciate you accommodating us with the extra day off ahead of Easter. Last Friday, we had boys and girls represent us at a Touch Rugby tournament, in Rotorua. Both teams played well, with our girls’ team winning a thrilling final against Tauranga Intermediate. We are proud of their efforts and achievement - in particular, that they beat our rivals from over the bridge! :-) Our refurbishment is nearly complete in Rooms 24 and 25. The contractors are putting the finishing touches on the classrooms and they should be ready for use in week one of next term. The teachers and students from Rooms 11 and 12 will be moving into the space to make room on the field for Kiwi Can. In the last couple of weeks, we have had to deal with some intentional vandalism in the boys toilets. This has included the breaking of an internal door between the toilet area and the changing room. In this case, the whole door and frame was broken away from the wall and was costly to have fixed. On another occasion, someone pulled 2 recessed lights out of the ceiling, exposing wiring and risking their own safety. Lastly, there have been some rather poor “aims” when it comes to using the toilets and this has caused the floor to be quite disgusting. We have spoken to the boys at school about this, but would appreciate you having a word with your son at home, as well. If there is anyone out there with any information about the issues I have raised, please contact the school office. On my walks around the school and into classrooms this week, I’ve seen some fantastic learning happening. Groups are up and running, students are learning to manage themselves effectively by meeting deadlines and there is lots of learning from and with each other happening in many classes. As always, I thoroughly enjoy how friendly and respectful our MMI kids are. I like that they stop and chat and they interact positively with each other. My last official ascent of Mauao is this Friday. I must say that I am looking forward to ticking off the challenge. It’s been neat to see some familiar faces on my many Mount missions - and I congratulate any friends and family that have taken part in the Everest Challenge. Enjoy the Easter break and the short working week that follows. Keep safe over the long weekend and make the most of some extra family time. Ma te wa Whaea Melissa

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The weather was perfect last week for racing and the trails were fast and riders pumped.

Under 13 girls

Poppy Lane put on a gritty display for 4th, only 30 seconds off being on the podium.

Under 13 Boys

Nick Gibbard had a couple of mechanicals, having to stop to put his chain back on three times on the first two laps, finished up11th. Macka Wagstaff was quick, coming in in 16th. Mitchell Saunders 19th, Luke Thompson 23rd, and Oliver Norwood 25th.

Under 14 Girls

Holly Bathgate showed good heart to come in 7th against some formidable competition.

Under 14 boys Cam Ford, in 8th, showed great skills and aggression, was hampered on the first lap with an unlucky grid position. Cam was the fastest rep from MMI on the day. Arlo Cullwick in 11th, great effort from him to finish so strongly in a classy field.

Felix Bird, in 14th, showed great fitness and a ton of potential.

George Mills, in his first ever race, was in 26th, great result.

OOOPS!! Sorry Luke Blow, we mistakenly used your brother’s name in last week’s newsletter. Luke Blow (not Jack Blow) won the BOP/Poverty Bay Super 11 Tennis, singles competition and the doubles with Flynn Skipage.
