Why do F love America? Che great reason is that I was born in the United i States. .To live in 'America is to love it. On my fa- ther's Kentucky farm, I have learned to love the lnd-the snell and feel of it. Land gives life and at the same time reclaims its own. This soil, is rich with opportunities for all people, regardless of their color, age, beliefs,- or social status. I also loi>e my country because of the freedoms it provides for its inhabit- ants. This "land of the Pilgrims' pride" was made great by those same Pil- grims. 'Americans have valiantly struggled for 'centuries - from the Revolu- tionary War to the Vietna- mese War for rights they held as sacred. The same government set up by those great.men so long ago still exists today. Another reason for loving my country is the people, the Americans. These peo- ple have fought a long, hard struggle - and are still fightingto keep Ameri- ca as the Pilgrims had it and to preserve our great ' coontiy-for generations to come. I remember when sickness visited my home and left my father-terribly ill. All the neighbors^who had no more than we did, came and brought food and helped us cut and house our tobacco. I shall never forget those people, the honest-to-goodness true 'Americans. Those people' were not related .to the hippies or draft card burn- ers. They were, in the true sense, of the word, neigh- bors. Such people make a lasting irrrprtssidn tiat never dies. 1' think that I shall al- ways rentember America'8 beauty, its majestic splen- dor. God truly shed His grac* on this land - fpm collet to c o a s t . T h i s i s j n y land from Cali-fomia to New Yoik, from the Rio Grande to the Great Lakes, and all the blessed moun- tains, rivers, forests, and plains in-between. I love the distaqt mountains robed in puiple; I am inspired by the silhouette of majestic trees against the daiken- ing sky; I am enchanted by the musical trickling of a brook as it makes its never- ending journey to the bea. To some, people, these things would not be a just cause for loving their coun- try, but beauty is in the e y e o f the beholder. A s I think about America, my^ cup runneth over: The last reason for loving my country is the .symbols that^ represent 'America. This great flag which flies so grandly over our country has been a stay in time of Hrouble to Americans. Each color of "Old Glory" has a special meaning for me. The red rmindsme of the sun setting behind our house when evening sha- dows draw nigh; blue isthe bluenesa of the sky as I watch a silvery airplane soar hipji overhead; white Dale Whiteker, Sandra Smith, Judy Cox, Kathy Elliott, Joy Parrett, Deb- bie Owens, Marsha R>nder. 8th Grade Margaret Hammond, Ron- ald Harper, Zella Begley. 9th Grade -Roger Thomas, Anita Gail Smith, Teresa Par- rett, Norma Robinson, Trina Shepherd,' Cathy Allen, Diane -Abrams, Bar- bara Oimmins. 10th Grade Sharon Coneron, Donna Collins, Brenda Wynn, Laura Lee Holland. 11th Grade Mandy Wagner, Linda Mo- Hargue. , 1flh frode Barbara Abrami, Rose Collins, Dora Jean Cbok, Lewis Dale Hal comb, Elizabeth Ann Moore. is the Jitteringpurity o f a new-fallen snow. The Liberty Bell, though crack- -wL down the side,-, still peal s with joy in the hearts of A ricans as i^y realize.how precious freedom really is. The Anerican Eagle has spread far and wide, even to the most remote places, the gTeataess of our* country. When "I awake in Be mornings, I thank the good Lord that I'm alive and living in/America. Hugh Raines and family. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mor- ris,pMc. and Mrs. Reuben Hammons, Mr. and Mrs. Ariie Renner and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kelley visited relatives in Richmond, In- diana over the week end and attended manorial set* vicea while there. Week end visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen were Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Dennis of Waco and Mr. and Mrs. Bud Sowders and baby of Richmond. Our sympathy is extend- ed to the family* of Arthur Mom*. passed away Wednesday, May 20. Frank Callahan is improv- ing after undergoing sur- gery at the University of Kentucky Medical Center By; Elizabeth Allen I am proud that I, am' an American and I am eager to tell you why. Yet I am not sure that it will be easy to do so. To me, the feeling I g e t when I see an American flag waving in the breeze against the bl#e sky is part of being an American. Whenever the national anthem is played, I hold my head up high, proud of my country. These are feelings and I can not al- ways put them into words. Oh, I know some of the words. What is it about the red, white, and blue? Red for courage? White for purity? Blue for honor? When I sing "The Star' Spangled Banner'' I sing out strong on the most im- portant part, "the land of the free and the home of the brave." Bravery and freedom, I can use these words to describe what America means to me. I suppose freedom i s t h e strongest -word. Most peo- ple could use if to describe Mlhat Anerica means to them. -To some, -America means a land with freedom of speech. To others-Ameri- ca means freecfom to have a part in our -democratic government. To me, the most important part of living in -America is the freedom of religion. In every city or town in the United States of'Ameri- ca - no matter how large or 8mall - one c a n . s e e churches where people may go to worship God wi thout fear (if persecu- No matter where one goes one can see evidence of this, whether it be a coin which, reads, "In God We Trust"' or the many church- es across the nation. Pride in the heritage our forefathers left us, is being, an -American. Making cer- tain that the world, .when we become adults, will be of a" type that our children will be proud of their Ameri- can heritage. America is having a news- paper to read each morn- ing, taking a trip wherever we desire to go^America is earning and spending your money as you wish. America is having a choice of radio and television stations. 'America is all the little things we take for granted. To be an American means to love our fellow man. If they are citizens they should have' everyrigbtto share all die privileges of our country. Dies -living in America mean a protest march agai nstthe war in Vietnam? A riot over racial issues, or a hippie free-for-all at the beach over a holiday. So what if we are teen- agers? Do we have to be ' disrespectful of our coun- try and our God because of a few mixed up characters who are against eveiy- thing? This should make us work even harder to show adults there are plenty of good teens who are proud and happy that they are Ameri canst Tneae reasons, perhaps above all others, portray only a spall part of "What Anerica Means to Week end visitors of Mrs. Frank Callahan were her daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Correll, and Mr. C°rrell, of Richmond, Indiana.
