    i. M.Tech. in Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering:The Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering Department is equipped withcomplete laboratory and library facilities and qualied members of faculty. Most of the

members of faculty of the department are actively engaged in research and some of

them have already published quite a number of papers in National and International

journals. The undergraduate students have performed quite well not only in the University

examination but also in extra curricular activities and won prizes and bouquets of honourin various competitions and exhibitions. Research & Development projects have also been

undertaken by the members of faculty. Many M.Tech. students of the department have

already presented their research papers in International and National Conferences. In this

context, it may be pointed out that in the 4th Convocation of the WBUT held in 2008, ourstudents bagged all the medals gold, silver and bronze of the University.

Rationale:There has been a spurt of development in industry in the area of Instrumentation and

Automation. The theoretical and practical aspects of this discipline have rightly been

supported by the associated disciplines of Electronics, Communication and Computer

    Science & Engineering.

While the existing undergraduate course leading to Bachelors Degree ourished, it was

only natural to go for the postgraduate (M.Tech.) programme for training of manpower who

would not only cater to the requirements of the Industry but also of Academia teachingand research inclusive. It is fully endorsed that with the infrastructure and academic support

available at the Institute for this M.Tech. programme, the standard of training has reached

    new heights of excellence.

    ii. M.Tech. in Biotechnology:

The Heritage Institute of Technology is perhaps the rst self-nanced engineering college

in the Eastern Region that has been entrusted to be involved in the postgraduate educationand R&D activities in Biotechnology. The Department of Biotechnology which started B.Tech.

course in 2002 has well equipped laboratories suited to the needs of the curriculum and for

basic research work. Members of the faculty are highly qualied with R&D experiences in

India and abroad and have numerous National and International publications and patents

to their credit. The department houses several extra-mural research projects including UGCfunded one, conducted by the members of faculty.

The department is proud of its B.Tech. passouts, most of whom are now engaged in

postgraduate education and research in reputed institutes all over India as well as in

foreign countries. Students of the department are encouraged to think independently, read

non-text reference books and try hands-on experiments. They regularly attend seminarsand present papers in Annual Sessions, Seminars and Symposia organized by the Indian

Science Congress, in CHEMCON by the IIChE, West Bengal State Science Congress and

the like. They take part in debates, quiz competitions and tech-fairs, both within and outsidethe college. Apart from securing some top positions in the university examinations, they

have bagged several prizes in seminars, technology/ engineering fairs and other

    events.

The department endeavours to bring students closer to science through cultural

and extra-curricular activities. The department motivates its students to be aware

of the social needs and serve the nation and mankind with knowledge and its

    application.

    Rationale:

Biotechnology is an umbrella term that covers various techniques for using the

properties of living things to make products or provide services. Presently around

200,000 people are involved in biotech industries worldwide. India is currently ranked

third in the Asia-Pacic region, based on the number of the biotech companies, trailinig

behind Australia and China. In India, there are more than 800 companies, in all sectors

of biotechnology, of which 20 are working in the modern biotechnology sectors. The new

economic policy has exposed indigenous technology and Indian industries to the rigours

of global competition. Development of indigenous processes and technology become a

must for thriving in the competitive market. The nation needs a good number of dedicated

and skilled professionals to meet the demand.

Being a fast-growing subject, biotechnology is highly dependent on R&D for new

products and concepts. The Government of India has set up the Department of

Biotechnology which invested over Rs 1,000 crores for developing skilled manpower,

creating R&D infrastructure and providing support to the public funded institutions.

The Government of West Bengal also plans to set up a Biotech Incubation Centre

on 1,50,000 sq. ft. of space at Sector-V in Salt Lake, for which orders worth Rs. 2crore have already been placed to buy machines. Over 50 R&D labs in public sectors

are active and over 20 are conducting research in frontiers of biotechnology. Export

of Indian Biopharmaceutical products has grown 47 per cent annually. The M.Tech

course in Biotechnology will help students take a leadership in the R&D sector in both

industry and academia. Students can have challenging jobs in areas of healthcare,

renewable energy, food and agriculture, pollution control and other relevant industries

and tracing out alternative processes for industrial chemicals.

iii. M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering :The Chemical Engineering Department was established in the Heritage Institute of

Technology in July 2002. Since the inception, the department has a long standing record

of producing top and toppers-of-the-top undergraduate students in B.Tech. Examinations

conducted by WBUT (consecutive four years starting from 2006) and bagged nineuniversity medals out of a total of twelve. The outgoing students have also established

a creditable record through their performance in GATE/ CAT and GRE. About 15% of

the total passed out students are studying/ have studied in USA, UK, IISc and IITs. The

department is manned by highly motivated and enthusiastic members of faculty, quite a

few of whom are having a long teaching experience in India and abroad. Most of themembers of faculty in the department are engaged in active research and they regularly

publish papers in International and National scientic journals. The department has an

active Students Chapter of IIChE and a Renewable Energy Club supported by WBREDA,

Govt. of WB. The organization of Chemical Engineering Congress (CHEMCON 2007) and

Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas of State of West Bengal in 2007 added two feathers on

the department. The department would be proud to host Students Chemical EngineeringCongress (SCHEMCON) in 2011.

Rationale :The Department of Chemical Engineering has long term goal of establishing itself as one of

the top providers of world class Chemical Engineering education and to pursue excellence

through operation of high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Theunderlying aim of the postgraduate programme is to mould young minds to competent high

quality professionals who will ultimately take leadership roles in their chosen elds. The

diversied elds in which these young engineers may play signicant roles are process

engineering, innovative research and development and involvement in management or

academic activities. The MOU with NEERI has opened up new opportunities so far as

members of faculty of the department are actively engaged in research and

some of them have already published quite a large number of papers in

National and International journals. The department is equipped with a good

number of state-of-the-art computers connected in LANs.

Rationale :The recession in the US market and global meltdown termed globalrecession, which has been described by the IMF as the .most dangerous

shock to rich-country nancial markets since 1930s engulfed the complete

world economy during 2008-2009. However, because of the volatile job

market, brighter students are now likely to go in for higher studies forenhancing employability, thus posing greater demand for PG programmes.

Furthermore, since the global economic crisis has hit IT spending in US andFrance, many Indian software companies are now focusing on the domestic

front. In fact, Indias top three IT rms TCS, Infosys and WIPRO have

decided to take on global giant IBM for a bigger share in software development

for the domestic market, which would require qualied professionals.

The Department of CSE has felt these needs for developing specialized

manpower and decided to offer an M.Tech. degree in CSE where state-of-the-art topics will be covered in depth to satisfy the present and the future

needs of the markets. Degree holders from this programme will also be

considered as the next generation faculty, instrumental in the formation

of a knowledge society and essential in playing a role in the expansion of

technical education launched by the MHRD, Govt. of India.

At Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata, we use the state-of-the-arthardware and the latest software from Microsoft, IBM, CISCO, Macromedia

etc., for our various laboratories like Multimedia lab, Network lab, Basic

Computing lab, Web Technology lab, Project lab etc. There is also a team

for working with open source so that the institute may also contribute to the

    development of open source software.

department motivates its students to explore new knowledge areas through various training

programmes imparted by reputed institutes like SINP, ERTL Indian Statistical Institute etc.,

which help them to enhance their research orientation and future growth.

Rationale :Electronics & Communication Engineering gained momentum in India as early as late

1930s with the introduction of Manual Exchanges and, since then, advances in this eldhave crossed all boundaries culminating in Indias Moon Mission: CHANDRAYAN. Around

1960, reputed Institutes in West Bengal like CU, JU, BE College along with the IITs started

their Electronics & Telecommunication UG programmes supplemented by PG programmes

in a short span of time. This revolution in the eld of Telecommunication gained further

momentum with the introduction of Digital Technology, Integrated Circuit Technology like
