    MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR

Applied research with practical bias is oneof thekey missionsof IDRBT. In order to realize this mission,

IDRBT has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Hyderabad

(UoH) to run the M. Tech. (IT) programme with a focus on Banking Technology. The University of

Hyderabad is one of the top Central Universities in the country. It has earned 9 rank among Indianuniversities.

The syllabus of this two-year post graduate course concentrates on subjects which are directly

relevant to Banking Technology. The technology content is quite comprehensive and intensive. The

appendedsyllabusclearly outlines thefocusand thethrust ofourprogramme in detail.

The unique feature of the two-year course is a rigorous one year project work at IDRBT under the

guidance of our faculty members. Our faculty members possess a good blend of theory and practice.

Students areexposed to rigorous training in the state-of-the-art labs like Secure Technology Lab, CRM

Lab and Mobile Security Lab. Intense technical skills needed by banks to build, operate and exploit

their Information Technology infrastructure are taught to them. Students are oriented to the banking

domain by experts drawn from the industry. Further, they are exposed to INFINET, SFMS, and DIGITAL

CERTIFICATES that are important aspects of modern Indian Banking. Recognizing the importance of

soft skills, the current batch has undergone the English Impact programme from British Council,

    Hyderabad.

Given the good blend of theory and practice on one hand and technical skills and soft skills on the

other, these students would be assets to any organization. Given this unique learning experience, it is

no surprise that these students are very much sought after and we achieved nearly 100% placement

    lastyear in financialservices industry.

Banking industry is the key stakeholder of IDRBT and it is appropriate for banks to exploit the

opportunityand engage thesestudentswitha unique and comprehensive learning experience.

WewelcomeBanksto participatein thecampus placementopportunity of IDRBT.

Banking, FinancialServices andInsuranceIndustry (BFSI) is a critically important industry

in any economy. The Banking and FinancialSystem in the country reflects the economic

health of the country. Therefore, banking is a highly regulated industry worldwide asdepositor interests needsto be protected.

As witnessed recently, the global economic crisis happened due to the failure of the

banking system in the United States, which led to a contagion effect that wasprocyclical

and therefore, triggered a systemic crisis that affected the entire globe. The banking

industry hasalways been under supervision by national regulatory authorities as well as

    international frameworks forregulation.

Our Indian economy successfullysurvived through theglobalcrisis, primarily because of

the due diligence exercised by the professionals of our banking community and theprudence ofour regulatoryauthorities.

IDRBT M. Tech.(IT) students undergo a rigorous training in banking information systems.

They undergo a one month internship programme on the field in a real world banking

context. Moreover, they are equipped with Communication Skills courses offered at the

    British Council in Hyderabad.

The students are capable and competent of handling demanding assignments in the

banking sector. We will beprivilegedif you offer them an opportunity tobe a partofyour

    team.

The Information and Communication technologies together enabled the Banking and

Finance industry what they are today. As of now, much of the business processes are

just e-enabled without reaping the benefitsof businessprocess reengineering.

New technologies and processes like XML, SOA, Data Integration and Data Analytics

would be providing the right platform for banks to embark upon meaningful strategies

    forinnovation and integration.

In the race for embracing new technologies to join the bandwagon, one vital issue that

quite often gets sidelined is security. Much emphasis is given to Firewall, IDS, etc.

However, IDS will soon be overburdened unlessSecureCoding Practices and Source

Code Revieware relieduponto plug loopholesand fatalflaws.

The M. Tech. (IT) students are well-equipped in all the latest technologies. I am sure

they can perform wellwith the helpof the knowledge they gained inIDRBT.I wish them

    allsuccess in theircareer.

Students undertake one year projectwork to do in-depth work on a particular topic of

immediate relevance to the banking industry. Thecourse includes the following subjects:

Banking Technology offers students an insight intothe role played by technology in enhancing theeffectiveness of the banking sector and also toprovide a strong foundation in the varioustechnologies used for delivering banking andfinancial services. It helps students appreciate thattechnology cannot be viewed in isolation, which is acrucial step in integrating the technology andbusiness goalsof banks.

Cryptography enables you to store sensitiveinformation or transmit it across insecure networksso that it cannot be read by anyone except theintended recipient.Banks use encryption methods allaround the world to process financial transactions. The course exposes students to various symmetricand asymmetric encryption schemes, as well asdigital signature schemes, hash functions and secret

sharing schemes. Cryptography finds application inSWIFT which operates a worldwide financialmessaging network. Structured Financial MessagingSystem (SFMS) is a secure messaging standarddeveloped to serve as a platform for inter-bankapplications.It is an Indianstandard similarto SWIFT.

    RESEARCH INITIATIVES OFM.Tech. (IT) STUDENTS

    MobileBanking

    Data Mining

Mobile banking is the new emerging channel forbanks. So here in this field, we are working with thedesign and development of various Mobile BankingApplications like Mobile Wallet, Banking CloudS e rv ic es o nt o M ob i le D ev ic e, N ea r F i el dCommunication (NFC) based payments. We also try

to addressmajor risksand threats in MobileBanking.

Data Mining, the extraction of hidden usefulinformation from large databases, is a powerful newtechnology with great potential to help companiesfocus on themost importantinformation in theirdatawarehouses and data centers. Here, we work onFraud Detection, Bankruptcy Prediction, ProfitabilityModeling and Ranking, Customer Credit Scoring,

Customer Churn Pred ic t ion , Asse t Liab i l ityManagementfor Banks and Financial Institutions.

With the advancement of technology in banking andfinancial sector, Information Security emerged as abig concern. So, here we deal with various methods(including tools & techniques) for identification of vulnerabilities in existing system. We also work ondifferent methods/approaches of Digital Forensics, toinvestigate electronic evidences, involved in CyberCrime/ Fraud scenario.

By using various application areas of Imageprocessing (like watermarking and stenography), wetryto hardenthe Financial Transactionscarried out by

    Wework on Biometrics to generate a new and secureu se r au t h ent i cat i o n me t h o d, (Pa lm-p r i ntAuthentication)forbanks.

Cloud computing is the use of computing resourcesthat are delivered as a service over a network(typically the Internet). As it offers advantages likeon-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, etc., we areworking on dynamic resource allocation strategies in

order to address the various risks related to clouddata security and implementation issues to adoptcloudcomputingfor financial sectors.

The INdian FInancial NETwork [INFINET] is thecommunication backbone forthe Indian Banking andFinancial Sector. All banks in thepublic sector, private

    CloudComputing

    FinancialNetwork

sector, cooperative, etc., and the premier financialinstitutions in the country are the members of theINFINET. Various applications running over the

INFINET network for accomplishing transactions, require some bandwidth. We areworking on buildinga model for forecasting the network bandwidthrequiredfor thesetransactions.

Today banks face big challenges to reduce cost of services, provide services to unbanked people, etc. Therefore, we proposed a new Payment Systemwhich would enable electronic transfer of money. Inthis system, we proposed to create an electronicpurse for every mobile phone owner. Mobile phoneowners may transfer value from their purses to otherpurses without the intervention of banks. The valuewould be held in a central server. The project is tospecify the system using formal methods and proveits security features and properties. Formal methodsare a means of ensuring mathematically softwarequality.
