THE President of the African Na-tional Congress (ANC) and the Re-public of South Africa, Jacob Zu-ma, has called on the members ofthe ANC to be more committed in
this organization in order to save the nation.
Zuma was addressing thousands of ANCsupporters at Idutywa Stadium on Sundayduring the ANC in the Eastern Cape’s 2014manifesto rally. He said there is a need to make the ANC
stronger and follow in the footsteps of TataNelson Mandela.Idutywa has become a political battle field
in canvassing for the forthcoming elections,as the United Democratic Movement (UDM)leader, Bantu Holomisa, had conducted adoor-to-door campaign here recently. The breakaway leader from the Congress of
the People (Cope), Mluleki George, had alsolaunched his new party in the area last year.
In addition, there is also political instabili-
ty in the ANC itself in the Mbhashe area.ANC councillors were expelled from the or-ganization and by-elections will take place in12 wards of Mbhashe.Zumamentioned the pain of losing a charis-
matic leader like Mandela causing unbeara-bly agony to the people of South Africa andthe nation as a whole.
He appealed to the people to vote for theANC because it was the only organizationwhich fought against the apartheid regime inthis country and brought freedom.“On these 20 years of freedom it is the only
organization that changed the lives of manypeople in this country. It has taken peopleaway from poverty, created job opportuni-ties, built houses, improved the economy ofthis country andoldpeoplehave receivedbet-ter old age grants than during the reigns ofapartheid. We are leading and we will lead,”said Zuma.He expressed his gratitudewith the cooper-
ation his party got from its members in allthese twenty years of freedom. He revealed that they want to get rid of the
bucket systembecause thepeople of SouthAf-rica do not deserve to use buckets for toilets.
He also mentioned that as governmentthey want to centralize the issue of tendersbecause it destroys the nation. “We have al-ready established a tender board to deal withthe tenders,” said the president. He warned members of the ANC who get
involved inwrong-doings to resign before theorganization take further steps. The provincial chairman of the ANC, Pu-
mulo Masualle, vowed that they would workhard in the province to ensure that they getan outright majority in the forthcoming elec-tions.

THE employees at Life St Mary’s PrivateHospital in Mthatha vowed that theywould not go back to work until their em-ployer agreed to give them a 8.5% in-crease.
The employees went on strike on Janu-ary 9, when an agreement couldn’t bereached after numerous meetings withthe management. Management is offer-ing an increase of 7%.
A sister of a patient at the hospital isplanning to take her to another private
hospital due to the strike.“The strike could jeopardise the lives
of the patients, since there are no nursestending to them,” said Nosisa Maligontsi.
“Her life is in danger at this hospital,”she said.
Noni Jonas, who spoke on behalf of theemployees, stressed that they would onlyreturn to work once the employer agreedto a 8,5% increase.
Attempts by the Express to obtain com-ment from the hospital’s managementwere fruitless. They were said to be inmeetings and their phones were not an-swered.

THE African Farmers’ Association of SouthAfrica (Afasa) president, Xolile Mngqameni, has expressed gratitude over Phez’komkho-no, a ploughing campaign run by the provin-cial department of Rural Development andAgrarian Land Reform.
The R38 million campaign, which is a con-tinuation of the Masibambisane Food Secu-rity Project, a non-governmental organiza-tion (NGO) chaired by President Jacob Zu-ma, was launched at Ngqeleni Sports groundlast year October.
Mngqameni said the programme wouldassist in addressing the issue of food securi-ty and provide an environment where farm-ers could contribute to the country’s econo-my.
“The drought has negatively impacted onfarmers, but the state’s ready to assist. Theopportunity is an open door for Afasa,” saidMngqameni.
The MEC for the department of Rural De-velopment and Agrarian Land Reform, Zole-ka Capa, deemed the initiative the smartestway of helping farmers address the damagescaused by last year’s veld fires, and drought.
“And it will make it possible to plant morethan the previous year. Since South Afri-cans were not given an opportunity to cometogether and fuse ideas, the initiative servesas a platform for villagers to reach each oth-er and practise independence instead ofwaiting for the government to do things forthem,” said Capa.

PUPILS selected to receive bursaries from theDepartment of Transport in the Eastern Cape, were handed bursary confirmation letters bythe Department’s MEC, Tandiswa Marawu, last Tuesday.
The event was held at the Mthatha Airportand was attended by department officials, thelearners and some of their parents.
Marawu said the department was playing aleading role in responding to some of the goalsset by the leading party, to create jobs and toimprove training.
To the twenty bursary recipients, the MECsaid they should consider themselves lucky tobe the chosen ones.
“You are so fortunate and you should neverforget that, because there were more than 100entries but due to financial limits, we could on-ly select 20 pupils,” said the MEC.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transporthad, since 2003, awarded 4500 bursaries tomostly disadvantaged learners.
“During the selection process, we made surethat there was fair representation of pupilsfrom rural and urban areas but honestly, wehad to be biased towards children from ruralareas,” added Marawu.
This programme seeks to address the chal-lenge of a shortage of black pilots in the prov-ince and to also encourage the youth to consid-er studying maritime studies.
The bursaries will cover tuition and residen-tial needs for each pupil studying Civil engi-neering, Maritime studies and Information
Technology and placement after the comple-tion of the course will be arranged by the de-partment, together with its partner companies.
One of the recipients, Asanda Ketelo fromZimbane location in Mthatha, said he would bestudying IT at the Cape Peninsula University

computer shops while trying to get funds tosupport his family. With his mother being un-employed, they survived with his grandmoth-er’s pension but since her passing last year, things had been difficult at home and he hadno hope of ever going to university.

Tuck intoTuck into CoolCactusPearsCoolCactusPearsPalm tree green, beach sand white, sizzling hot pink and sunset orange...these are the shades of summer. They’re also the vibrant colours ofone of the season’s most delectablesweet treats: crisp, cool cactus pears, which are in season right now.
There are avariety of fruitsto choose fromto suit everytaste, includingMorado, the lo-cal favouritewith its delica-te white fleshand subtle, fresh taste;Gymno with itsdeep sunshineyellow/orange flesh and wild sweetflavour; the ruby red/pink Algerian, with its crimson flesh and floral, exo-tic notes and the Skinners Court, alarge, green fruit which can turn redtowards the end of the season but re-tains its light green sweet flesh.
This riot of gorgeous colours me-ans cactus pears make for a wonder-ful show on summertime plates, es-pecially in al fresco settings. Thinksalads, salsas, sauces and syrupswith a honey sweet kick and you getan idea of the versatility of thesecompact little gems with the tantali-sing taste.
Although best served chilled, coolcactus pears are equally at home insavoury dishes as they are in sweetdesserts. Of course they can also besimply enjoyed as they are, peeledand eaten whole or sliced. Contraryto what many people think, peeling
a cactus pear – also known as a prick-ly pear – is not a thorny issue. Theseready-to-eat, convenient fruits comewith most of their spines removed;all you need to do is remove the skinwith a paring knife and a fork andyou’re ready to tuck into a taste of
summer; itcouldn’t be ea-sier!
For years so-me cultureshave claimedthe cactus pearoffers medici-nal benefits. IntraditionalMexican folkmedicine, forexample, it
was used to treat diabetes. Other cul-tures have used the fruits to treatburns, stomach ailments, cuts andbruises, sunburn and windburn, con-stipation and cold symptoms, and toreduce inflammation and cholesterollevels.
While it remains to be seen if thesetraditional health claims can be sub-stantiated, what we do now know isthat cactus pears are naturally freefrom fat; are a source of fibre, biotin, the antioxidant vitamin C and man-ganese; and are a great addition toany diet.
Homegrown on South African soil, cactus pears are available throug-hout summer and the start of au-tumn, with a season that spans fromNovember to the end of May. They’rereadily available during this timeand easy to find at fruit marketsacross the country.

Rude Ngqeleni taxi driverIn this day and age, we thought Taxi driv-
ers’ behaviour had changed for the better butrecently, we came across a very rude and dis-respectful driver waseNgqeleni. The dude is so loud okokuqala, akazihlo-
niphi passengers ezikhwele kwiQuantum ay-iqhubayo as if akaxhomekekanga kuzo.He packs the taxi up to almost 25 passengers
instead of 16 and demands the same passen-gers to push the taxi when it got stuck.Waqwela ngokwehlisa the passengers eSas-
ol instead of Steers garage where all Ngqelenitaxis load off. Passengers begged him to takethem up to Steers as it was in the morningwith many rushing to work but, rudely, he re-fused.He even begged that wakhewalishiya likha-
la ixhegwazana yena pha eSasol so he doesn’tgive a damn about any one. He said the pas-sengers could freely go and report him at therank office, he would answer there. To the owner of this Quantum, if he or she
still needs business, makathethe nabasebenzibakhe and this guy is denting the image of thetaxi drivers.
Behave even after the examsBantwana bam we love you more than any-
thing in this world, even in the 2014 we stillneed you because you are the future of thiscountry. This warning goes straight to you. To finish
your exams doesn’t necessary mean youmustmisbehave over joy to whatever you have de-cided to do because you had put the pensdown. If you got chick or outie stick to that one,
if you drink as part of celebration, do it halfway and not overdo it or you must be able todraw the line. If you are grooving, do it in agood manner.
There is a sign that shows that some ofyou completed their exams because youwill meet few numbers of them in thesemnandi places. Akuzondawo zenu ke ezozezabantu abadala asele besebenza besidlaizimali zabo hayi le yokuba uyosebenzisaimali oyiphiwe ngabazali bakho. Siyazikukhona ukuhlanjwa kwamaphepha nez-inye izinto zizakuqala but don’t forget uku-ba there is still a tomorrow, so whateveryou do reserve for tomorrow. Nivile mossbecause there is no reserve for a life.
Do what you afford to doThere is a style which we don’t like at
all on the gossip land where people areforcing themselves to do some thingswhich are not suiting them or unafforda-ble.Did you meet someone who does things
because of buddies or the status not thatit is from the bottom of his or her heart?Uze ubone umntu ukhupha nale beku-
fanele ukuba ngeye-grocery and used it inother things because he or she wants to en-tice friends. You can find such people hav-ing prominent friends who’ve got money, yena ke ngeloxesha is not earning morethan R1200 a month.Da man if not lady he or she will buy ex-
pensive whiskies if not going out to the bigrestaurants and buy for friends. Ungalibalike ukuba his or her friends are tripling theamount he or she is earning a month, sothey don’t have any problem to buy for herwhen they’ve got money. After the friends have gone he or she will
battle with his or her stomach and nothingin the fridge as he or she spent the cent that
saw one of our buddies spending his last centin his account because of tshomiz. Khazi um-gosi ubusele ubona phi ukuba usebenzisene-cent yokugqibela.Hayi kaloku sibone i-balance kwi state-
ment from the ATM ukuba ushiyeke neR23.00 of which it was difficult to withdrawfrom the ATM. It’s worse ke because he wasbuying something which he never ate but inthe name of his friends.Mind ke, one of his buddies is a well
known business person who does not careto use money because ucaphula kusale. Jon-ga esi si-Aram because sileqa endala sicingaukuba lithole sizama ngayo yonke indlela tomatch the standard. HOO! Kwaze kwanzimaemhlabeni sokhile.
In each and every party there is alwayssomeone who misbehavesIf you can listen attentively to some of the
songs even if you don’t like that kind of mu-sic but when you move out and check someof the things these songs are mentioning arehappening in real life.Do you know ukuthi xa ufika in a party
everybody is looking nice if not gorgeouspreparing to be in a partymood? But akukhonto ijika izinto nje ngezi ziphuzo zisema-phodleleni anemibala eyahlukuneyo. Ez-inye ziswiti ezinye ziyakrakra ezinye asiza-zi ukuba zinjani ii–taste zakhona becauseawunakuyifanisa nanto ubona nje umntuoyiselayo enyakama. Some they called it i“shibi”, utywala, amambawu, alcohol andso forth.Guys we respect daai ding bathi wutywala
because it changes the lives of our sisters aswell as our bros but in this point in time we
are going to talk about our dear sisters butanyway sorry about that.Do you know the artist by the name uM-
garimbe when he said kukhona ozolahla inhis title track “Sister Bertina” he was rightbecause girls are “lahling” outside there.Umntu ufika ezicuphile eshaya ngamamakeups if not seductive skirts and glittering facemara when the time goes by especially whenshe feels that kuvaliwe eHawaii meaningthat she is like any onewhowas in that partyif not joint. And it’s worse xa evele anxile adlule
kwamntu okhona apho, kude kujale no-bobuhle. Guys recently there was a girl inthese mnandi places who was looking likeLatoya lo wase-TV, who was very disci-plined when she was arriving but the prob-lem startedwhen she got drunk, things total-ly changed. Usisi ufike enze inwele zakheemhle and guyswho attended the party weremumbling sooner they looked at her direc-tion. Owuu! Waya etshintsha when the ci-ders started to run in her blood vessels. She started to speak loud dancing silly.
But nothing wrong to that esingakuthan-danga kukucaca ukuba ibrukhwe ibinxityi-we ithanda ukuveza iinyama ezingamkele-kanga ukuba zivezwe in public. Sisi umhlebut your behaviour after you got drunk isamazing. Can you please try to reduce yourspeed because uzakuphela zi-lions aphaphandle. Bulela nje ukuba every guy in thatparty was harmless kodwa ngenye iminisoze udabule. Keep your beauty away fromsuch misbehaviour.Ubuhle bobakho, iinyama ezintle zezakho
akukho mntu uzifuna ngokuba uziveze nga-la ndlela. Uvile ke beauty of the soil.

AN MTHATHA-produced film, which had been released thisweek, left the audience attendingthe preview at the All St Hall inMthatha begging for more, whileothers couldn’t stop talkingabout the unbelievable talent ofthe local actors and producer.
uSisa noSisanda, which waswritten and produced by Mt-hatha- born, Sonwabile Mfecane, was filmed in Mthatha and cen-tres on two local disabled people. The two disabled actors star-
ring in the film are AsavelaMraxa who portrays the charac-ter of Sisanda and her uncle isacting as a Reverend. The plot isabout a teacher who drinks a lotand ends up being in an intimate
relationship with a disabledwoman working at the Mthathamarket. There are ten characters in the
film, including a Port St Johnswoman from Mlengana, KhumsaMamani, who sadly passed awaybefore the film was released.Mbuyiselo Mraxa said he feels
honoured that people living witha disability were given thechance to act in the film.“This alone shows that disa-
bled people can do it and God cre-ated them and also providedthem with a talent like any othernormal person. People or com-munities need to accept us be-cause we do have gifts which Godgave to us. Disabled people mustunderstand that they can do itandmust not fear anything,” saidMraxa.
The writer of the film, SonwaboMfecane, said with the film theywere aiming high and their in-tention is to sell the film to anySouth African broadcaster, par-ticularly Mzansi Magic; failingwhich, they would make DVDsand sell it directly to the public.“But, we are unable to sell it
without classification. The stum-bling block now, is to get hold ofthe Film Publications Board toclassify the film and to try to dis-tribute and market the film,”said Mfecane. The crew is expected to visit
Mthatha and surrounds, showingresidents the talent in Mthatha, particularly to schools for thedisabled. The filming was sponsored by
the Eastern Cape Arts and Cul-ture Council.

BETTIE GILIOMEE
AT the end of last yearNissan launched newmodels in its Almera and Sentra range withthe two basically switching places in theJapanese manufacturer’s range of models.
The redesigned Almera is now competingin the smaller B-segment of the market forcompact family cars while the new Sentratakes on the hotly contested C-segment se-dan market filling a gap in Nissan’s line-upin the country.Thismakes it a competitor ofmodels such
as theChevrolet Cruze, HondaCivic, ToyotaCorolla, Ford Focus and VW Golf and Hy-undai Elantra.
ExteriorThe new, 13th generation Sentra has a so-
phisticated and stylish look that is moreclassical sedan than head-turning. The testvehicle was a dark red metallic colour - notmy favourite colour on a car, but it certainlydid look good on the Sentrawith its roundedbody lines. My favourite part of the car asfar as looks are concerned - is its rear.
Interior
secret hatch gives access to the boot from therear seats. There are steering wheel controls for the
four-speaker CD audio systemThe Sentra features a high level of standard
equipment. The list includes the alloy wheels,LED accent halogen head- and tail light ele-ments, chrome detailing, remote central lock-ing, multi-function tilt and telescopic steeringwheel, the multi-info trip computer, smartLED interiormap lights, a radio/CDaudio sys-tem with MP3, USB/iPod and aux integration,Bluetooth for hands-free cellphone use and au-dio streaming, four speakers, front and reararm rests, folding rear seats, four cup holdersand a bottle holder in each door, air condition-ing, electric windows all-round with one-touch up and down for the driver, electricmir-ror adjustment and auto-locking doors.
RideThe Sentra is powered by a 1.6 litre four-
cylinder engine. The difference in themodelsis found in the transmission and buyers canchoose between a five-speedmanual or a CVTtransmission. According to Nissan, the CVTis lighter on feel with a consumption of justunder 7 litre per 100km.The ride was nice and smooth, the han-
dling quite good and it dealt pleasantly withall the speed bumps on my daily route. Youwill not really feel any g-force travelling orovertaking in this car, but it is not meant toimpress wSafetySafety features include ABS brakes as well
as six airbags.PriceThe C-segment is a very competitive one

The stylishnesscontinues to the in-terior which has avery luxurious lookand feel. It is spa-cious and decoratedwith soft materials, adding to the feel. The front seats
are comfortable andthere is ample leg-room for the back-seat passengers. A
but its roominess and comfort will defi-nitely count for it among sedan buyerswho are looking for a reliable, economicalfamily car that does not look like an econo-my car.The Sentra with manual transmission
costs R230 900, while the CVTmodel is pricedat R253 600.

SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE
THE OR Tambo District Municipality is in-volved in a campaign to develop underdevel-oped sport codes in all its local municipalities.
These Cinderella codes include softball, cricket, swimming and volley ball.
Softball teams are already in existence intheir local municipalities, except Port StJohns Municipality.
OR Tambo’s first step to invest in these
codes was shown last Friday when the Mem-ber of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) in theCommunity Services, Siyakholwa Mlamli, handed over sports equipment to the OR Tam-bo Softball Federation at Jersey farm.
OR Tambo donated the sports equipmentwhich cost R122 000. The equipment includestops, pants, socks and many more.
Mlamli emphasised that their mission asdistrict municipality was to ensure that theyinvest in such Cinderella sport codes becausethey have already supported well-known
sport codes like soccer and netball on manyoccasions.
He said they intend to revamp the structuresof these Cinderella codes that were vandalizedand ensure that kids are taking part thesesports. He appealed to the softball coaches to bepersistent and ensure that they organize coach-ing clinics to develop softball in this region.
The Chairman of OR Tambo Softball Feder-ation, Mzondeleli Qotoyi, said they were overthe moon about the initiative. He said the is-sue of equipment had always been a problem
as they were compelled to borrow from otherteams. Even with their training they had haddifficulties since they didn’t have equipmentto train.
He said they were ready to triumph in thesecodes since they now had enough equipmentto train with. The OR Tambo softball teamswere winning even before they had propertraining equipment. With the right equipmentthere is no stopping their winning ways.
