Donegal youths to play football for peace Over 1,000 young people will benefit from an exciting cross-bor- der community relations football programme - Football4Peace (F4P) Ireland - which is to receive International Fund for Ireland support of over 500,000. Commenting on the initiative, Paddy Harte from the IFI, Paddy Harte said: “I am delighted that the Board of the International Fund has agreed to support this very exciting project. It is through participation in initiatives like this that significant progress can be made in promoting good relations. I am looking forward to working with IRDL and both the IFA and FIA and seeing the undoubted positive impact this programme will have on the young partici- pants over the life of the pro- gramme.” The concept behind F4P is an international community relations project based in Israel for the past six years which has been devel- oped by the University of Brighton with the support of the British Council Israel and the Israeli Sports Authority. In essence, the model involves training all of the coaches involved in the implemen- tation (Israeli, Palestinian, and UK coaches) in exercises that cover the main elements of the project (fair play, inclusion, respect, neu- trality, trust, responsibility, and equity). The coaching sessions for the young people do not concen- trate on the mainstream coaching points. While each session does follow the same coaching structure of planning a session with the familiar headings for the coaching to be structured around (ball familiarity, passing and receiving, dribbling, and attacking skills) the emphasis is on community rela- tions and peace-building. This three year programme which targets young people is a joint venture between Inishowen Rural Development, the I. F.A. and the F.A.I aims at using football as a means to promote good communi- ty relations through cross-border and cross-community partner- ships. The University of Brighton will forge links with the 3rd level institutions in the North-West to ensure the core values of the F4P model are embedded in the region. Over 1,000 children will be intro- duced to community relations in the three year period thereby pro- mote positive relations, raise awareness of racism and sectarian- ism and promote healthy living amongst marginalized groups. Through the Coaches Development section the adults involved in the clubs will also experience the community rela- tions based values and it will start to aid in cultural changes at this level. Over 40 adults in influential positions with young people will be introduced to community rela- tions in the three year period.
