Donegal youths toplay football for peace
Over 1,000 young people willbenefit from an exciting cross-bor-der community relations footballprogramme - Football4Peace (F4P)Ireland - which is to receiveInternational Fund for Irelandsupport of over €500,000.
Commenting on the initiative,Paddy Harte from the IFI, PaddyHarte said: “I am delighted thatthe Board of the InternationalFund has agreed to support thisvery exciting project. It is throughparticipation in initiatives like thisthat significant progress can bemade in promoting good relations.I am looking forward to workingwith IRDL and both the IFA andFIA and seeing the undoubtedpositive impact this programmewill have on the young partici-pants over the life of the pro-gramme.”
The concept behind F4P is aninternational community relationsproject based in Israel for the pastsix years which has been devel-
oped by the University of Brightonwith the support of the BritishCouncil Israel and the IsraeliSports Authority. In essence, themodel involves training all of thecoaches involved in the implemen-tation (Israeli, Palestinian, and UKcoaches) in exercises that coverthe main elements of the project(fair play, inclusion, respect, neu-trality, trust, responsibility, andequity). The coaching sessions forthe young people do not concen-trate on the mainstream coachingpoints. While each session doesfollow the same coaching structureof planning a session with thefamiliar headings for the coachingto be structured around (ballfamiliarity, passing and receiving, dribbling, and attacking skills) theemphasis is on community rela-tions and peace-building.
This three year programmewhich targets young people is ajoint venture between InishowenRural Development, the I. F.A. and
the F.A.I aims at using football as ameans to promote good communi-ty relations through cross-borderand cross-community partner-ships. The University of Brightonwill forge links with the 3rd levelinstitutions in the North-West toensure the core values of the F4Pmodel are embedded in the region.
Over 1,000 children will be intro-duced to community relations inthe three year period thereby pro-mote positive relations, raiseawareness of racism and sectarian-ism and promote healthy livingamongst marginalized groups.Through the CoachesDevelopment section the adultsinvolved in the clubs will alsoexperience the community rela-tions based values and it will startto aid in cultural changes at thislevel. Over 40 adults in influentialpositions with young people willbe introduced to community rela-tions in the three year period. Donegal brokers attend
