must be replaced by new ones.
Information on Equipment Safety
The following information on equipment safety applies to the followingNordson units:
Units that apply hot melt adhesives and units that apply cold glue, as
well as all related accessories
Pattern controllers, timers, compiling and monitoring systems as well
as other optional process controllers.
Unit Shutdown
To be able to safely and reliably perform many of the processes described inthis document, the unit must first be switched off. The degree to which theequipment must be switched off depends on the unit used and the respectiveprocess. When required, the shutdown instructions are specified at thebeginning of the process. The shutdown levels are:
Relieving System of Adhesive Pressure
Completely relieve system of pressure before detaching a hydraulicconnection or seal. Instructions on relieving the system of hydraulic pressurecan be found in the respective melter manual.

Disconnecting System from Power Supply
Before accessing unprotected wiring or connections, disconnect the system(melter, hoses, guns and optional accessories) from all voltage sources.
1. Switch off units and connected accessories.
2. Lock and label isolators and circuit breakers that energize units andoptional accessories, so that nothing can be switched on unintentionally.
NOTE: Government regulations and industrial standards specify certainrequirements to isolate hazardous energy sources. Refer to therespective requirement or standard.
Deactivating Guns
All electrical or mechanical devices that transmit an activation signal to guns, their solenoid valves or the melter pump must be deactivated before anywork can be performed on a pressurized gun or within its effective range.
3. Switch off the gun controller or disconnect it from the power supply(pattern controller, timer, PLC, etc.).
4. Detach the input signal cable from the solenoid valve(s) or detach the gunpower cable (electrical guns).
5. Set the air pressure to the solenoid valve(s) to zero and relieve theremaining air pressure between the pressure controller and the gun.
General Safety Instructions: WARNING and CAUTION
Table 1 contains the general safety indications (WARNING and CAUTION)for Nordson melters and cold glue guns. Study the table and carefully read allof the warnings and precautions that are relevant to the equipment describedin this manual.
The units types are designated as follows in table 1:
HM = Hot melt (melters, hoses, guns, etc.)
PC = Process control

Unit type Warning or caution
HM
WARNING: Hazardous vapors! Before processing reactivepolyurethane hot melt adhesive (PUR) or material containing solventsin a suitable Nordson melter, carefully read the MSDS and comply withit. Ensure that the material processing temperature and flash point arenot exceeded and that all requirements pertaining to handling, ventilation, first aid and protective equipment are met. Failure toobserve the instructions in the MSDS can cause injury or death.
HM
WARNING: Reactive material! Never use halogenated hydrocarbonsolutions to clean components made of aluminum or to purge Nordsonunits. Nordson melters and guns contain components made ofaluminum that may react severely with halogenated hydrocarbons. The use of halogenated hydrocarbon solutions in Nordson units cancause injury or death.
HM, CAWARNING: System pressurized! Relieve system of pressure beforedetaching a hydraulic connection or seal. Failure to observe can allowpressurized adhesive or cold glue to escape and cause personal injury.
HM
WARNING: Melted material! When performing maintenance onequipment with melted adhesive, wear eye and face protection as wellas heat-protective gloves and clothing to protect exposed skin. Hotmelt adhesive can cause burns even when it is still hard. Withoutappropriate protective equipment, injury can result.

Unit type Warning or caution
HM
CAUTION: Hot surfaces! Avoid touching hot surfaces of guns, hosesand some melter components. If contact cannot be avoided, wearheat-protective gloves and clothing when working on hot equipment.Failure to comply with the instructions to avoid hot surfaces can resultin injury.
HM
CAUTION: Some Nordson melters are designed especially forprocessing reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesive (PUR). When anattempt is made to process PUR in a unit not intended for this material, the melter may sustain damage and the adhesive can hardenprematurely. Please consult your Nordson representative if you areunsure of whether your unit can process PUR.
HM, CA
CAUTION: Before using cleaning or purging agent on or in the unit, carefully read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and the MSDSfor the agent. Some cleaning agents may react with hot melt adhesiveor cold glue in unexpected ways and cause equipment damage.
HM
CAUTION: Nordson melters are tested with a type R cleaning agent, which contains polyester adipate plasticizer. Some types of hot meltadhesive may react with type R cleaning agents and form a solidrubber, which then clogs the melter. Before use, verify that the hot meltadhesive is compatible with type R cleaning agents.
Other Safety Precautions Do not use an open flame to heat hot melt system components.
Check high-pressure hoses daily for excessive wear, damage or leakage.
Do not direct the assembly handgun towards any persons.
Always hang the assembly handgun in the bracket intended for this
purpose.

Cleaning ComponentsWARNING: Risk of fire. Do not heat Nordson cleaning agent Type R over245 C (475 F). Use only a commercial controlled electrical heater intendedfor heating industrial fluids. Heating Nordson cleaning agent type R over anopen flame or in a non-controlled heater can lead to personal injury orproperty damage.
1. Soak the components in Nordson cleaning agent type R, heated towarmer than the adhesive melting point.
2. Remove the components from the cleaning agent and wipe thoroughlywith a soft cloth to remove all foreign matter.
CAUTION: Use a precision cleaning pin of the correct size to clean Nordsonnozzles. If a pin other than a precision pin or a pin of the wrong size is used,
the nozzle may be damaged. The Nordson nozzle cleaning set (P/N 901915)
contains various cleaning pin sizes.
3. Insert a cleaning pin of the proper size into the nozzle outlet.
4. Grasp the cleaning pin with a clean cloth, then extract the needle from thenozzle; wipe the needle clean.
5. Clean the armature and the spring.
6. Check all components for damage or excessive wear. Replace ifnecessary. Refer to Parts, Gun service kits.
