GETTING INVOLVED AT SNC WITH

ORGANIZATIONS/PROGRAMS

The following is a selection of organizations and volunteeropportunities which appeal to particular minority.

Multicultural Student Services InitiativesConsistent with the St. Norbert College mission the Office of Multicultural StudentServices (MSS) seeks to facilitate the best undergraduate experience formulticultural students through culturally relevant services that foster their successfultransition, persistence, achievement, and graduation.We will achieve our student­centered mission through partnerships that facilitate:

Student support by building relationships of commitment and trust; Partnerships with academic and administrative departments to better serve

multicultural students; Promotion of multicultural awareness through personal interaction and

educational programs; Academic and career support services; Student and organizational leadership development; Student advocacy; Increased retention of multicultural students

The Department of Multicultural Student Services (MSS) serves all students, and isespecially attentive to the needs of those identifying themselves as Black/AfricanAmerican, Hispanic/Latino/a, Asian American, Native American/American Indian,multi­racial, and LGBTQ.

Students Taking Academic Responsibility (S.T.A.R.)

STAR is an early arrival program for 15­20 first year multicultural and/or firstgeneration college students. The program seeks to help first year students:

Establish meaningful and supportive relationships with faculty/staffon­campus

Become familiar with the campus buildings and programs Develop valuable skills for academic success in college Foster leadership skills that will help with future career success Create long­lasting friendships that will help make your four years at St.

Norbert memorableStudents who participate in the program will attend weekly meetings that addresstopics such as financial aid and study tips. We also have bi­weekly dinners andmonthly activities such as bowling or movie nights. Men of Distinction (MOD)The Men of Distinction group is a program that assists male multicultural studentsin their transition into college through a yearlong series of meetings exploring issuesof race and gender. Along with the weekly meetings, men engaged with the programwill be given a mentor that will serve as a role model, ally and advocate for theparticipants. Mentors will also help participants by challenging and assisting themwith issues they face as they emerge into adulthood. Students involved will learn tochallenge current social norms as well as develop a positive sense of identity.Participants will gain leadership skills that will enable them to be successful in theircurrent educational life as well as their future family and community living.

Connections ProgramThe CONNECTIONS Program is designed to integrate leadership developmentwith civic engagement. The CONNECTIONS team is first­year research fellowswho work together to develop leadership skills while serving others on campus andin the community. This program creates an atmosphere of community and supportfor students in their first year at St. Norbert College.There are two main components with participation in Connections: leadershipdevelopment and civic engagement.Leadership Development Students participate in activities and/or workshops that assist them indeveloping leadership skills throughout their freshman year. This may include:

Attend workshops monthly Service project planning, research, presentation, implementation and

reflectionCivic Engagement (encompassing Service Learning) Students are required to be active with either the AVID program at FranklinMiddle School or the after school program at Howe Elementary School. Activitieswithin this program include:

Tutor and mentor middle or elementary school students Receive a monetary compensation for tutoring hours Participate in community service with the AVID or after school program

Research Fellow QualificationsStudents should be self­ motivated, flexible, quick learner, organized, good peopleskills, team player, and creative. Qualified candidates have leadership and/or serviceexperience, and experience working with middle or elementary school agedstudents. Students should be from underrepresented populations, low incomeand/or first generation. Access to a car or comfortable with public transportation isalso a plus as students need to drive to various sites.Students participating in the CONNECTIONS Program will be paidapproximately $1500 for the academic year from St. Norbert College. The tutoringhours are approximately 4­6 hours a week. Emerging Leaders Program

Emerging Leaders is a competitive first semester program of about 30­40 firstyear students who want to learn more about leadership, program planning, andcampus involvement. The program kicks off with a weekend retreat where memberswill bond, participate in team building activities, learn about various leadershipprojects on campus, and learn a few basic leadership models and theories.

Other components of the program include four large group meetings,participation in planning a group leadership project with an upper class mentor, andcompletion of a leadership workbook. Meetings may include topics such as timemanagement and goal setting, program and event planning, personal leadershipstyles, and pathways of leadership.
