Multimedia Receiver - Update

Social Networking with a Digital Receiver

Topfield SRP2100 TMS

It was only a few weeks ago that we put the all new SRP2100 TMS from South Korean manufacturer Topfield under the microscope

– take a look at the 08-09/2009 edition of TELE –satellite. We were quite impressed with this box back then;

now there’s a software update that turns the Multimedia SRP2100 TMS into a

real social networking product. We updated our test receiver

and were surprised by all of the additional

features!

The Update ProcessSoftware updates can be

uploaded into the receiver in three different ways. The simplest and fastest way is to update via the Internet. The single push of a button is all that’s needed for the receiver to check and see if new soft-ware happens to be available on the manufacturer’s server, and if so, to download it and install it.

Since the receiver needs to be connected to the Internet for this to work, it is also pos-sible to download an update manually and upload it via a USB stick. If you happen to live in Europe, there’s also the ability to download an update via satellite. And along with this update, there’s also an updated channel list with all of the important channels from ASTRA 19.2° east and HOTBIRD 13° east.

After a successful update, the receiver automatically restarts after which the manufacturer recommends performing a factory reset to make sure that all of the criti-cal components are updated to the newest software ver-sion. In our case the update process was completed with-out any problems; our test receiver was now loaded with software version TF-BCPC 1.05.01.

ImprovementsThe first thing we noticed is

that Topfield reworked all ofthe on-screen display (OSD) texts. While the English ver-sion of the OSD was always presented correctly, it was the localized languages in older software versions that had problems.

For example, some help texts or menu points were presented in English even though it was supposed to be a German OSD.

But these issues have been taken care of so that now the entire OSD menu is presented clearly, in a nicely organized

manner and totally regional-ized.

When it comes to network settings, Topfield integrateda profile system similar towhat you’d find in a PC. Theuser can set up as many as five different network profilesthat can then be accessed with the push of just one button. If, for example, you regularly take your receiver to your vacation house in the mountains, you don’t have to change all the net-work settings manually every time you move the receiver between your home and the vacation house; instead you simply store two different profiles that are matched toeach location and select the appropriate one.

Here we want to men-tion another improvement: namely the possibility to make the receiver compat-ible with the matching USB Dongle WLAN. Now it’s easy to see why Topfield workedtirelessly to incorporate the profile function for the net-work connection.

MP3 lovers will also approve of the facelift Topfield gave toits MP3 player that now comes with the ability to mark entire folders for play back; now you can enjoy your favorite music for hours at a time and with-out any interruptions.

A variety of small bugs were also fixed such as for examplethe lack of audio available from the digital audio output after a restart of the receiver and the lack of EPG informa-tion after surfing through anumber of channels. In our tests, we no longer saw any of these problems in the new software version.

New FunctionsIn the course of examin-

ing these updates we were especially pleased that Top-field didn’t spend the entiresummer just working on fixing the software bugs inthe SRP2100 TMS.

Instead, they added a

number of one-of-a-kind fea-tures. The Topfield SRP2100TMS is the first receiver to beprovided with support for the micro blogging Twitter ser-vice.

TwitterMany people are familiar

with the little blue bird that all friends and relatives use from around the world and with just a few words manage to stay in touch with each other and take part in each other’s lives.

Topfield is the first manu-facturer that has taken this exciting new social network-ing service and incorporated it into a home multimedia device that now opens up new and thus far unheard of dimensions in a receiver.

You no longer have to get up from the couch and turn on the PC to see what your friends are doing at the moment; all you have to do, for example during a commercial break, is to use the remote control to start the Twitter service on the SRP2100 TMS.

The receiver displays all of the Tweets from your friends as well as numerous people that you are follow-ing or those that are follow-ing you. With the push of one button new Tweets can be started or other Tweets can be answered.

For the first time because ofthis application, it has really paid off that Topfield includeda wireless keyboard with the SRP2100 TMS. In this way the user doesn’t have to deal with the OSD keyboard and instead can update Twitter simply with the wireless key-board.

We here at TELE-satellite find this to be an absolutelyideal feature and are certain that there will be many copy-cats out there.

It also shows how much of an advance roll Topfield playswhen it comes to new ideas and technologies.

SHOUTcast Internet RadioWith the integration of the

YouTube video platform, Top-field has given the SRP2100TMS quite a boost to its potential starting sales. With the integration of the SHOUT-cast Internet radio service, Topfield has added to thisboost.

Thousands of radio stations from around the world are currently accessible through SHOUTcast and are only wait-ing for the opportunity to be heard through the new Top-field receiver. The integrationof this streaming service into the receiver was handled so perfectly that no feature is missing that you would other-wise expect to see on a PC.

The radio stations are divided into 26 different cat-egories; everyone should be able to find something thatthey like. There’s also a very practical search function that lets you easily find specificcontent. Once you have found radio stations that you like from the unending selection available through SHOUTcast, they can be quickly moved into the Favorites lists so that they can be easily viewed and accessed with the push of a button. Listening to music via the Internet is fun again and free at the same time!!

Media PlayerLast but not least, Topfield

gave a slight improvement to their media player. Now a variety of subtitle formats can be displayed so that those who are hard-of-hearing may also enjoy exciting movies.

On top of that the trans-port stream format of older 5000 series Topfield modelsis now also supported so that recordings can simply be copied to the hard drive of the new receiver for playback. In this way, you won’t lose any older recordings if you should upgrade to Topfield’s latestmodel.

All in all, this update for the

SRP2100 TMS has shown once again that Topfield definitelylives up to its slogan “Leader of Home Multimedia”.

With the integration of the

micro blogging service Twit-ter, Topfield has reached newheights and new possibilities that in the future will be part of all entertainment electronic devices.
