We Reinvest

60%Into Training

The motto for FlightSafety maintenance training could

easily be: Never satisfied. Or: Dedicated to constant

advancement. We don’t simply develop a program,

or establish a training site, and then sit back satisfied

with a job well done.

Our programs are in continual review – not just to

update with new systems and best practices but

also to incorporate the latest advances in education

and learning. And to accommodate new demand in

expanding markets.

Growth in Brisbane

Case in point: Our training relationship with Sikorsky

Helitech in Brisbane, Australia. Initially part of our

ground-breaking agreement with Pratt & Whitney

Canada to offer factory-authorized training on the

full range of P&WC engines at locations around

the globe, the training footprint at Sikorsky Helitech is

now expanding to encompass a wide range of airframes.

It’s part of our commitment to answer the call from the rapidly

growing number of operators in Australia and throughout the

Asia-Pacific region.

The one sure thing about FlightSafety maintenance training

is that, whatever advances we offer today, tomorrow we’ll be

working to make them even better. Check back with us often and

prepare to be pleasantly surprised at the upgrades you discover.

FlightSafety and Sikorsky Helitech collaborated to provide a second fully

equipped, full-time classroom to accommodate the new airframe training.

The new training complements highly successful factory-authorized training

already offered in Brisbane for the full range of Pratt & Whitney Canada engines.

Initial airframe training will focus on Sikorsky helicopters, but course offerings

will expand in 2015 to encompass King Air 200, Cessna Caravan, select

Cessna Citations and de Havilland Dash 8/Bombardier Q-Series.

Maintenance Training Expands in Australia, Asia PacificFor both airframe and engine training, technicians benefit from FlightSafety’s

in-depth classroom and hands-on practical technology-based curriculum. To

support the training, FlightSafety provides training courseware, two Graphical

Flight-deck Simulators and a wide range of training aids.

Australia and Oceana,” says Mike Lee, FlightSafety Director of Maintenance

Training, Business Development. “This new airframe maintenance training

will substantially enhance training at this facility and add value to our

Customers looking for airframe and engine courses.”

A dedicated entrance for FlightSafety training and a well-appointed

reception area provide a warm welcome to the facility. Customers also

have access to a lounge area with TV and refreshments, the training school

classroom and shop area, and the rest of the Sikorsky facility. The facility

hosts several Pratt & Whitney Canada field representatives, an MRO facility

and comprehensive helicopter service center, composite repair shop and

other training classrooms.

Fully Trained Partners

Several Sikorsky (Helitech) employees are dedicated full-time to the

FlightSafety training. These partner employees are fully trained and

certified to all FlightSafety maintenance training standards.

Classrooms at the location feature FlightSafety’s MATRIX training system,

which provides interactive instruction through fully integrated DeskTop

Simulators. Each Customer station features dual-screen computers.

FlightSafety Maintenance Training Managers Do Training of Their Own

The team that manages FlightSafety’s maintenance training Learning Centers understands the critical importance of training.

For themselves as well as for their Customers. So they came together on a recent weekend to make and renew acquaintances,

discuss mutual maintenance training issues and, yes, participate in training to sharpen and broaden their management skills.

“Our maintenance training managers are all highly experienced aviation professionals who have proven to be not only

excellent instructors but also gifted managers,” says Daniel MacLellan, FlightSafety Vice President of Operations. “One big

reason for their success is their commitment to ongoing training and endless quest to improve.” For the weekend’s training

component, the managers participated in an InsideOut Coaching workshop. The program teaches managers how to be a

coach to the teammates they supervise, helping them draw on their inner resources to deliver the best possible performance.

Johnson & Johnson DOM EarnsAward for Pursuit of ExcellenceIt took Joe Kmiec a year to land his current job. But that was 30 years ago.

He’s now Director of Maintenance at the Johnson & Johnson Aviation

Department. And he’s the 2014 recipient of the FlightSafety Award of Excellence.

“Joe Kmiec is an excellent role model for today’s aviation maintenance

technician,” says Mike Lee, FlightSafety Director of Maintenance Training

Business Development. “He trains frequently – at least once a year – and

seeks constantly to expand both his knowledge and his skills. We’re proud

to present this award to such a deserving professional.”

Annual Training for All

Kmiec also insists on annual training for every member of his maintenance staff.

And each of his 11 engineers holds the coveted Master Technician certificate,

signifying the ultimate achievement in maintenance training.

His drive and ambition were evident early on. He had a good job at Air Hangar Inc.

in Trenton, N.J., but knew he could tackle bigger challenges at the shop across

the field – Johnson & Johnson. So he started stopping by once a month to make

himself known and let them know he really wanted to work there. After a year, he got

the call he was hoping for. As DOM, Kmiec knows he’s only as good as his team.

“Joe Kmiec is the consummate team member who works tirelessly to achieve

the priorities and goals of the department,” says Carl Sorg, Johnson & Johnson

Director of Aviation. “He is consistently professional and his knowledge,

experience, attention to detail and collaborative skills are essential, allowing

us to maintain the highest standards of quality.”

Three Times a Master Tech

After Kmiec joined Johnson & Johnson in 1985, he rose to supervisor of

aircraft maintenance in just five years. He was named DOM in 2008. He

holds Master Technician certificates for three aircraft: Gulfstream GIV and

G550 and Sikorsky S-76.

Now that Johnson & Johnson has moved to Gulfstream G450 and G550 aircraft,

every member of Kmiec’s team is pursuing Master Technician certificates for

those models. “I’m honored to receive this award,” Kmiec says. “It’s especially

meaningful coming from FlightSafety, where I’ve received so much expert

instruction from experienced and knowledgeable instructors.”

Kmiec and his wife of 34 years, Alice, have two children. When he’s not at

work, he volunteers with the local Knights of Columbus to raise funds to

assist special needs children and with the Special Olympics of New Jersey.

Boeing Sees Demand for 1.1 Million New Pilots, Maintenance Technicians

For years, there has been much concern expressed about a potential

global commercial pilot shortage. But a recent Boeing forecast

predicts an even larger deficit of commercial maintenance technicians.

According to Boeing’s 2014 Pilot and Technician Outlook, the world’s

commercial aviation system will need 533,000 new pilots over the next

two decades and 584,000 new technicians.

The increased demand is driven by a steady increase in the number of

new aircraft deliveries. To maintain the new aircraft, about 29,000 new

technicians are needed each year.

“The challenge of meeting the global demand for airline professionals cannot

be solved by one company or in one region of the world,” says Sherry Carbary,

Vice President of Boeing Flight Services. “This is a global issue that

can only be solved by all of the parties involved — airlines, aircraft

and training equipment manufacturers, training delivery organizations,

regulatory agencies and educational institutions around the world.”

Course Explores Fundamentals of Aircraft Electronics

FlightSafety’s non-aircraft-specific Aircraft Electronic Technicians

(AET) Course provides any technician – including seasoned avionics

technicians and systems technicians – with a better understanding of

avionics fundamentals. The course, which serves as a foundation for a

building-block approach to avionics training, introduces the practical use

of such test equipment as oscilloscopes and multimeters. It is offered

at the Savannah and Tucson Learning Centers and is accredited by

the National Center for Aerospace and Transportation Technologies.

We’ve been working with HondaJet since the company named us

as its factory-authorized trainer in 2007 when it was just ramping up

its development efforts. As a result of that close working relationship,

FlightSafety is ready to begin training HondaJet maintenance

technicians in early 2015.

That means prospective HondaJet operators and authorized service

centers soon will be able to schedule initial training to ensure that

HondaJet Maintenance Training Set to Gomaintenance staff is on board and ready to go when the aircraft is

delivered. Comprehensive general maintenance training will meet

FAA, CASA and EASA (B1 and B2) requirements.

Expert Training to Match a Groundbreaking AircraftWhen the first Embraer Legacy 500 flies into service, it will immediately set new

standards for midsize aircraft. And maintenance technicians for the first operators

will be trained and ready, thanks to the close working relationship between

Embraer and FlightSafety. One hallmark of the Legacy 500 is a clean-sheet – or

should that be clean-computer-screen – approach to maintenance. That makes

for an aircraft that was built for easy maintenance – but maintenance that

requires comprehensive, in-depth professional training to master. FlightSafety

training. The exclusive factory-authorized trainer for the new aircraft.

Training Available Now

“We’ve been working with Embraer from the beginning,” says David Glass,

Center Manager at FlightSafety’s St. Louis Learning Center. “Analyzing aircraft

systems and maintenance implications and building training curriculums to

take advantage of this innovative aircraft’s fresh approach to maintenance.”

Courses combine academic and performance activities, placing special emphasis

on safety, component location, system normal and abnormal operation and

indication, routine service maintenance requirements and basic troubleshooting.

Maintenance training began at the St. Louis Learning Center even before the

first delivery, so operators can seamlessly begin using their new aircraft.

to be such a success that FlightSafety has expanded the program and

now is beginning to offer maintenance courses.

Steven Ralston, Assistant Director of Programs for the Wichita Cessna

Maintenance Learning Center, explains: “Maintenance operations know

it’s important to send technicians to training on a specific aircraft, but

some find it difficult to work around the time lost while technicians are

away for training. LiveLearning provides a solution.” Ralston and his

development team have been working to bring specific courses into

LiveLearning, starting with the Cessna 208EX Caravan Differences Course,

and new programs will be added in 2015.
